Sick of seeing racism/xenophobism online..

I went into a "Belgian racing" only room.

I have a Luxembourgish flag, since that is where I live, however I hold an identity card from the Belgian Embassy there.

The conversation was, "that is a Dutchman", then with a Dutch accent "Hey boy what are you doing here, trouble keeping your car on the track; have you" and I was kicked out. I did not get to speak with my bluetooth thingy yet, technology is less obvious then expected.

I understand it is nice to get to know people living near you that have the same passion, but a little conversation before kicking someone out and less degrading language would also be charming.

Sorry to hear 2 examples of being forced to limit the possibilities the game offers due to fear or experiences of racism.
The only thing I can say, if it's of any comfort that is, that you probably wouldn't want to be in the same room as these bigots although that's an easy thing to say perhaps coming from someone with no experience of being a victim of racism.
It doesn't surprise me that racism is painfully exposed due to the anonymous nature of internet although it being so widespread and expressed so openly and shamelessly (although perhaps easier to 'avoid' than silent racism) shows that...well not sure what it shows aside from the obvious observations that this world is far from perfect or to quote Oscar Wilde (also a victim of bigotry unrelated to race); "The world is a stage but the play is badly cast".

Just to be a short-ass I must say that discrimination of one by his nationality isn't actualy racism, it's xenophobia.

I hate this as well, but I still avoid the online racing lobbies and usually do private ones with my buddies, it's halfway through a decent fun.

Yet you seem to avoid Dutch players, or is that just one specific Dutch player and it doesn't have anything to do with him being Dutch?

Ya it is insanely racist on psn. There are so many US only, UK only, etc. And u get kicked if ur not from there. I hate the Spanish rooms tho. Everyone is only talking Spanish and screaming and I asked the host to change to the pp to higher because he had it listed as a real race room but clearly was only drifting and I didn't have any 300pp drift cars. He kept saying no he wouldn't change it and for me to just lower my pp on the car I want to use, which if u no about drifting isn't something u should really do since the car is set up for a certain amount of power, but I just got a garbage car instead and tried to drift that and suddenly a Spanish kid says change the pp and the guy does it right away. Same thing kept happening all the Spanish ppl say do something and it's done than me the non Spanish person ask and he does care.

Black people aren't racists just to be racists. 9 times out of 10, if black person says or does anything racists, it was in defense or a direct reaction to something that happened to them. Do you know why they say an old black man is one of the most racist people you'll ever met? Its because they've had cruel and outlandish things done to them because of racism.

That person made that room for two reasons, he wanted to be able to have an intelligent conversation without someone mocking him, and most importantly, just wanted to meet some more black people that played GT5(personally, I don't know any and it would sure be nice).

Sad part is, I'm more than certain giving his room that name made it an easy target.

He could be a black racist, but blacks beeing racist towards "white" people, and white people beeing racist against immigrants and blacks, is a little bit different. Both are racist, but they use different excuses, and they are racists of different reasons. Many immigrant groups etc, that shows racist tendencies against white people, do that because they have encountered racism and discrimination in their past. But yes, there are racists of all different kinds, color, religion etc.

The big difference is that white racist often follows the Hitler and white power doctorine, but immigrants and black people dont follow a formal racist doctorine. They maybe hate white people, but they dont have any arguments why they do it. On the other hand, white racist often mention the nazi propoganda, white power, kkk, etc, and these groups have "scientific" evidence that the white men is above all others, and therfore they can assault non whites. Also black racists and white racists are deadly enemies, because they are the extreme branch of both groups.

Almost all white racist follow some kind of white supremacy though. Because their actions can be justified by following the "white wizard".

Please change your topic from racism to Xenophobia! There is a HUGE difference! You are incorrectly using the racism card. Racism refers to biological status, while xenophobia refers to Nationality/Country!

As for what you are talking about. Yeah people are butt holes a lot of the time and they will continue to be butt holes. PD or Sony aren't going to get rid of them unless it was a serious issue.

And with regard to many, many other posts in this thread, there's a saying that I quite like, which goes along the lines of 'Only a racist mind sees racist connotations'.

basically I was trying to annoy them because when I joined their room I think they started throwing German insults at me. and IMO if you dont want to talk to people who speak a different language mute them or something like that, dont say "GERMANS/AUSTRIANS ONLY" in your match. and you wouldnt be racist just for spotting racism. for example, if I got called the N-Word I wouldnt be racist for detecting that as racism now, would I?

Its funny cause I was born in UK so I got the UK flag even though I'm not exactly british (more jamaican).
All the UK players let me into there rooms and as soon as I mention I'm jamaican or black I usually get kicked or into a racist argument.

From my own experience, the UK is bad and my country (USA) is by far the worst..

In a multi-cultural society you see racism even amongst groups who 'outsiders' would consider to be the same race. I've taught in some very mixed schools and can absolutely assure you that racism is ugly wherever it comes from.

Xenophobia is a part of racism, depending on which defenition you have on racism. There is no objective defenition on racism, thats it. Having disslike of a person because he has a certain religion or culture is racism according to me. You got to understand that racism is the result of many different discriminations put togeather.

For example many racists think that a persons culture and habbits is due to their genetic codes, and therfore they consider the certain culture to be genetic! "Its their nature so to say". So discrimination based on culture is sure racism. Thats why white supremacists said that jews and black people were natural born rapists, because its in their "genes". They also said that its the jews nature to take over the society and make everything jewish. So yes, according to many racists culture is also inheritaged thru the genes.

And there is a big difference between white racism, and the type of racism black people use. The white people often follow a certain doctorine and a theory, that they use as a excuse to discriminate. Both are "racists", but hence different kinds. There are also many different types of racism.

White racism isn't all about white supremacy, that's a rather blindfolded theory. You're absolutely right that extreme xenophobia can culturally manifest itself in racism though.

I worry about you making racism a black/white issue, that in itself is a traditional White Power view and therefore plays to their propoganda... as does ignorance of Black Power doctrine.

This is but one post on a forum that wouldn't appreciate a dissertation on the history, forms and social implications of racism; so I'm trying to be brief.

The bottom line is that racism (whatever its roots in any given situation) is not exclusive to one race, culture, cast or creed and its base cause is the same in all racists.

I find it funny how the original poster wants people to label the rooms more clearly, for example "Brits Only", yet now people have decided that even that is racist.

In my experience there is not as much racism as people are making out. I have joined rooms specifically for "British" or "English" people, not because I'm racist but because I want to be able to talk to people who speak the same language, is that so bad?

The main reason I see "German Only" or "Australian Only" appearing is almost purely for ping issues. I have joined Euro rooms to get a good ping, of course when an Australian or Middle Eastern person joins they will be kicked; we can barely see where they are on the track? Is that racist? We do, unfortunately, see some manifestations of racism when a 'foreigner' does join but in some instances you can have a frustrated host trying do deal with rebels who want to join the room to annoy the players.

I do admit, there is racism online, but not nearly as much as some people are claiming. I also question why you'd bring up ethnicity online. Surely you are doing that to cause trouble? I can't think of a context where I would say "Oh, by the way, I'm white".
