rofajole a.k.a. TeamE_rofajole vs EL_ZISSOU
<>
rofajole, sheriff timeattack, and myself all made it into our race on time, and gridded up quickly. i was last to get set up on the grid, and i could hear rofa revving his engine while i was still positioning, so i was not surprised when he got a bit ahead of me off the line. i was on the inside and hoped to retain enough overlap to disencourage him when we entered turn 1, but his start was good enough that i had to back off and watch him glide on through the turn.
we stayed about a carlength apart all the way to the first set of banking, and i got a really good drive out of turn 5(?) and, with the help of the draft, was able to make the pass on rofa pretty swiftly. he picked my draft back up a bit before the bus stop, but i believe was i good 5-8 carlengths ahead upon entry.
it looked as though rofa caught a bit of a bad exit from the busstop, because thats where i first established a substantial lead- enough so that i dont think he was quite able to pick up my draft, although i wasnt sure.
i decided to pit, since i couldnt be sure if i was far enough ahead to avoid the massive draft effect on the section before turn 1, and i decided that i would use my pit to instead catch some draft from rofa on the next lap, and have that one pit stop up on him.
i thought i had read that if the lead driver pits, the other must wait to pit on another lap, but rofa followed me into the pits so he either must have not seen that, or i interpreted it wrong. so, my plan didnt work out as hoped, but it seemed that my pitting practice before the race rewarded me with a big gap coming out, and i had enough of a lead to prevent him from drafting by the time i hit the banking.
from there, i was pulling away at a good enough rate that i decided to back off just a touch on the handful of turns that can result in disaster most easily. i was doing high 1.49s for most of the rest of the race, about a second off my best.
around lap 6 or 7, i saw what looked like timeattack perched at the pit entry, and i tried to read his handle and that resulted in a trip to the wall for me, at about a 3-second cost. on lap 7 or 8, i passed a yellow viper who then dove into me and shot me off the track just before the first set of banking- the real bad spot to go off because you practically have to throw it in reverse afterward to clear the barrier and get back on the track. i think that cost me around 5 seconds, but it could have been much worse.
at this point i was no longer feeling relaxed, because i had a dirty driver ahead of me that needed to be re-passed, and i had lost track of how far back rofa was, andhad no idea if he had made his second pit stop yet or not.
luckily i made it past the punter with a better drive out of the bus stop and a boost from his draft approaching t1, and held a very tight line to avoid a replay of what happened with him earlier. i turned a 1.49.6 on that lap, and then my time coming out of the busstop was a low 1.27, so i was feeling pretty good about things heading into the pits. lap 10 was another 1.49, with no stress and no other cars around.
i think i finished with a 17-second gap, and i imagine rofa had his share of troubles, if not more, since he seemed to be moving pretty good when we were racing close.
rofa, it was good to race against you and i was glad to see you in the quarter-finals. i had a lot of fun when we were on suzuka a couple of months back, and had to try for several days to get all of our group races in. congratulations on making it from around 40 drivers to the final 8.
i havent touched my wheel since this round was announced, so i think im going to go set it up soon and see if i can get moving a little faster.
congrats to everyone for all the hard work in this competition, thank you to t.a. for playing sheriff, and thanks again to rofa for a clean race that got scheduled quickly and easily.
see you on the track
