Sound Update (PD is now hiring! + Email!)Answered

I think the answer will be something like this: "I mentioned it before, but we are working on a completely new way to generate the sounds. It can't be updated in GT6 on PS3 due to its old hardware, but one of these days we will be able to show you the breakthrough. I'm still not sure if it will be ready for day one in GT7, but there's a good possibility that we might include it in a future update." :nervous:

the missing link in an otherwise great sim, was really disappointed when i 1st tried gt6. it seemed as if they had all this time since gt1 to work on it but nobody at PD seemed to be seriously concerned about it - it seemed that way. Kazs initial comment about it was a kick in the ribs ie: its too realistic

just hope that when they eventually get to it, they give it the attention it deserves - would complete the sim - the rest are just bonuses in my opinion

I don't expect a sound update until PS4 and won't be surprised if Kaz gives this answer or avoids the question altogether. Better for him to focus on the things that he has something positive to say. I want better sounds for sure, I just can't see it happening on the PS3 when all the other major enhancements are yet to be delivered.

I will answer so he doesn't have to

"We could possibly think about considering maybe patching it in through an update that may or may not be ready sometime in the future *Laughs*"

And guess what happened when he said that the last time...well...nothing, still no "update in the future".

My opinion on this is that it seems that with the total of 1200 cars, it looks like in Kaz's eyes that it is too much of a job and too daunting to tackle. I know this is a bit off subject but, We should only have one of each car model in the game. We don't need 20 S2000s Kaz, one is good enough! I suppose we all do not care about "oooh look here, the same car but with 1 extra pp, I MUST HAVE IT".

There are ways around the scope issue (1200 cars, multiple states of tune each, customisation options etc.) if you know how.

Oh I know about that one, I'm suprised someone hasn't started a question about custom parts (none that I'm aware of). I was very disappointed about the lack of livery editor and custom parts at this stage in the GT series. Enough of that, (I'll save it for another thread), back to the sound eh?

Custom parts you say? Ahem....

By the way, If the induction sounds are like this then the drool will start rolling out...

Maybe getting the community itself to aid with the Sound Development could be astounding

Agreed, we all would create such a better game although the problem is that kaz and PD are too ignorant or stubborn (I still like Kaz don't get me wrong) to hire any 3rd party dev. teams for sound. The problem is however, that they really need them so the work required can be done much faster.

That induction sound though! :bowdown::D

Thanks for the link.

This quote says everything i have to say about sounds in racing games. It makes me sad, that PD can't deliver realistic sounds. The next GT is their last chance to convince me that they can do it. And i am not the only one who thinks that in my opinion. Even the gt sound defender are putting their faith in the ps4 hardware.
“It’s what makes you feel connected to the road,” argues McDermott. “Coupled with the physics and the handling, I’d say the audio is one the most important aspects of the experience. If the audio sounds wrong it breaks the entire experience. The whole connected experience goes right through from physics to audio.”

AI > Sound

They need to improve the AI first. At the very least they need to make the current AI faster

As for sound, at the very least, they need to add more acoustic simulation. Even if it's just adding simple reverb effects, that would be better than nothing. The sound is so sterile because it's sounds like you're driving in a sound booth, not the open road.

Then they need to fix the exhaust sound.

I think people are forgetting that sound improvements are said to be in the works, regardless of anyone's definition of "future" and "never". That is the point of this question; to get more info about the fabled "update".

Whenever it comes, it will be a substantial step even in principle, but we don't know yet how it'll work and how the change in generation method will impact the rest of the game, and so whether the wait was "worth it". I personally think that any improvement will benefit the game; look at the Red Bull / Senna cars.

Thinking that we as a community could "make better sounds" is just naïve. Sound in videogames is on the cusp of a revolution, maybe over the next 5 - 10 years or so. That's my prediction, at least. What is now the state-of-the-art is thought to be, evolutionarily speaking, something of a dead end. There is loads of cool stuff being done for the movie industry, in terms of generated foley effects etc., that will have a huge impact in games once it's viable in real-time.

"We", as "a community", would probably struggle to get to grips with the way a modern graphics engine is put together, and that is also true of a sound engine even now, despite the primitive basis (sampling). The future of dynamic mixing, spatialisation, psychoacoustic LoD scaling and advanced DSP, not to mention physical modeling in a forward (not reverse engineered) sense, looks very bright in video games - we'd all best get genned up if we're going to help out! :P

I was talking only about the sound! ;)

Personally I don't have a problem with the sound. I use a high quality pair of Sennheiser headphones. Could it possibly be the inferior sound system of your TV that is causing your dissatisfaction.

We've been through this already. I use a pair of Triton Audio headsets, along with a Logitech 5.1 sound system, I've also played GT6 on an LG 5.1 home theatre system, messed around with the settings in game and on the systems and I still think that the sounds need work. Particularly with cars I've driven in real life. If you think they're fine, that's cool, each to their own.

There is obviously a systematic quality issue with the game's sound in its current state. However, hardware interactions are known to cause problems.

Primarily, I'd say, the problem is often playing the multichannel source from the console through stereo-only speakers, resulting in only front left and right channels being heard (big problem in interior views, although PD changed the mixing to help this slightly).

Also, the lack of phantom bass and other concessions to poor quality hardware, aside from the flawed (software) dynamic range compressor (which should be set to Small Theatre by default, in my opinion), contribute to a lack of impact and consistency on said hardware.

To get the best from the game, however slight, you do need to be aware of things that can make it sound substantially worse. It obviously can't help that the Reventón sounds like a V10, though, for example.
