SRT Tomahawk X VGT Super Lap: Nürburgring Nordschleife

For the first time I can ever remember I used ASM in a race. I was 20 odd secs off gold and figured I'd try it just to get it over and done with. Worked for me. 4:41.379.

Holy carp! I have never used it, even once, no one ever speaks about it. I might try this again with it on!

Tried again this morning. Many more completed red laps, but my times were coming down. Eventually I was at 3:15 at the Carousel. Finally did a bronze lap at 5:54. Now I have 2 SRT Tomahawk X VGT cars ;)

I was in abject disbelief and frustration for the first few tries. I turned feedback and torque down to minimum (I think this helped me the most, but I also really didn't want to kill my old G27), put on TC 1 and AS strong, and tried to acclimatize; the frustration continued for quite a while. It probably didn't help that I was sorta chasing GTP_PASM's line at the time, but I eventually got the ol'geezer reflexes warmed up and minimally in sync with the car, by which time I was sweating (in winter). The handling is unearthly when pushed.

My wife said, while passing - 'Why are you going twice as fast as normal?'

The next time I got past the Carussel without red-lapping (1-2 hours later, probably), I pretty much babied it home for a 4'00.119 - around 10 seconds behind my part-alien quarry (who had doubtless just done one easy/safe completed lap for him).

There's enough of a starry-eyed geek in me to appreciate the blue-sky engineering thought that went into this - I said out loud during the video 'IT HAS ACTIVE YAW' before it was mentioned. I smiled when I read about the graphene 'glass' - how much is windscreen insurance, exactly?

When are we getting graphene & aerogel ultracapacitors, dammit!

My favourite car is the Dino 246. I love old, beautiful cars, and I like racing GT3, Gt300s and 500s, muscle cars, the works, or at least a pretty wide gamut of cars in their contexts. I'd never consider racing this thing, but it was still immense fun; it has its own context. Kinda like good SF writers (hard or otherwise) - and occasionally even bad ones.

And I totally had no idea about the DRS thingy :dunce:

Better handling if force feed back both 1 and all help options on.

edit:my steering quit heavy because it is full hand control:acceleration/braking/swift+racing steering wheel, and normal g27 is lightweight and acting different..

It's nice to see you in the Seasonal Forum again, @Stotty! I get the impression that you haven't been spending much time on GT6 these days. Either that, or you've just been staying off GTPlanet. Whatever the reason, it's always nice to hear your opinion on all things GT6. I agree with you completely regarding this car. Frankly, I feel this way towards all the SRT VGT cars and most VGT cars in general.

Yesterday was the 1st time I've had the wheel out in over a month. I've been busy with work and stuff outside work - weather's been good so some golf & fishing, plus I bought an apartment in Spain late last year and I've been spending as much time down there as I can get away with :D

VGT cars... I have no idea why PD waste resources on VGT cars. There are more than enough cars in the game, no need to add more.

Stotty no offence but it's not possible to coast on the back half and get that time.

By coast I mean not pushing... flat out to the Karusell, after that played it safe to get through the lap. I didn't even realise the car had DRS until I came on here to post the time.

Of course one man's coasting is another's flat out ;)

This would have been great, if not for the fact that I DQ'ed at the guardrail turn next to the start/finish on a 5:23 run, about an hour ago, and barely managed a 5:41 after that because I was so frazzled.

It's the rule-mongering that ruins this one.

Edit: I just noticed that there are only about 1,100 people right now that qualified for the bronze and the free car... which seems pretty low- even for after a release. ;)
I hit that guard rail twice at the start of the run, left it and golded the 'easier' Formula GT

So true. It was the same with me on the DRS but to be honest i've been experimenting and I do it faster not using it till the final straight. I've ran it with and without and it's the only place wher I gain by using it.

I doubt I'd use it anywhere else either - the car is already too fast for my old reactions, and I need both hands on the wheel just to keep it pointing in vaguely the right direction

Still, I guess there would be at least 10s left for me to chase, if not more - my 3rd sector split alone was 2s off my best (mid 54 vs a number of 52's), and I barely tested the limits over the back half. However, I doubt I'll both running it again as although the car's actually OK to drive, the wheel shake is really irritating

Agree entirely with you mate. My arms are still aching!

My right arm (inside forearm/elbow joint) was already aching from a day catching carp on Saturday. When 1st I woke up this morning I could hardly straighten it

It's OK now!

I tried this last night, but could not best my previous time. Probably because I only spent a half-hour on it. I could definitely tell the car was more stable.

I completely relate to your entire experience. Although, i hadn't been fishing - i play as a GK 2 nights a week and my usual pains got worse after this seasonal

I knocked off 8 seconds this morning on my first lap and then on my second I was up ten at the start of the straight. and you guessed it. second to last turn I bounced off the curb and just nicked the wall enough to go red. Just got home from my arthritis Doc and they are starting me on new meds so I am hoping I get some use of my hands back. I feel you on the wheel shake. By the way, you are 69 in the world while I am 72.

I think I broke my brain trying to get to the first sector of this challenge, let alone string together a whole lap. The car seems to lack response to me and it outruns my inputs, always half-a-second too late braking, accelerating or cornering, not to mention an unbelievable amount of understeer on nearly every single "Slow" corner on the track (Which, considering how fast this car can go, is nearly every one of them).

I salute anyone certifiably insane enough to get a lap in with this car, because I simply cannot figure out what to with this car. If I had a year to practice it like the infamous "Mission 34" I might be able to Gold it, but not in 24 days.

you overestimate this challenge idk. it's more like a screamer looks at first sight very scary but actually isn't

if i could do this sub 2 hours == easy challenge. doesn't stay even close to Mission 34 from gt4.

That's not my experience with this car.

Unlike many commenters here, I do not short shift. I keep the revs up and find it very responsive. I use no traction control, and have not had problems with it breaking loose under acceleration.

As for stopping power, I have been amazed. There have been many times when I braked late and feared I would fly past the turn into the trees. Instead, I pushed harder on the pedal and the car stopped so quickly I had to peel my eyeballs off the wind screen before accelerating again to reach the corner entry.

I turned force feedback sensitivity down to 1, with torque on 3. I find that the car is agile enough to thread needles as long as my attention span allows. The only exception might be the very slow chicanes where I pulse the throttle to assist in rotaion.

It took several attempts to complete my first lap--because my mind tends to wander down the long straight and I miscalculate approaching the final turns. But overall, I think the gold target time is very conservative. I'm an average driver with little experience on the Ring, but I'm confident I could achieve sub-4:15 times.

Just stay off the curbs.

Been working with this sled for a couple days now.....normally drive a Focus RS around the Nurb.....this car somewhat quicker than that.....won the car with a 5:45 and have my time down to a 4:05 now.....with a little more practice I think there is a 3:50ish time lurking......

I don't know how anyone is able to control this car. I can't seem to keep it from darting one way or the other while braking or just steering around a corner. Mentally, I'm always having to guess how I'm going to over correct for something that may or may not happen. It's characteristics are far too unpredictable for my driving skill. Sometimes it darts into a turn while steering, and sometimes it just won't steer as much as I expect it too. Too frustrating.

About to hook my ps3 up to try this event:boggled: I'll update this post with my time ;)

Edit

After 5 Restarts i Got this time :nervous: Man my hands started to shake halfway though and my heart started to race  That's why i'm not gonna try for a gold.

First time that has ever happen in a game with me

The wheel shake. So you never did the final race with GT Academy? That was real wheel shake, wouldn't be surprised to find it damaged a number of different wheels.

Try starting out in 3rd gear. Most all corners don't require you to drop below that. I found the car was more stable. No short shifting or anything. Drive normal from there up. But using 3rd as the lowest made it more predictable. Then after a few youll be used to it. There's one turn you can drop to 2nd but right back to 3rd. Has plenty of power to be fast in 3rd.

Sometimes holding a lil gas still while tappin the brake helped. You can leAn on the car though through the corners.
(Wheel) Abs1 no TC. 3rd gear had no slip either

And like jbaffoh said. Def stay off the curbs. Hope it helps you.

I'm by far from fast but ran under 4 and a half

Only ran that one long enough to get gold... wheel shake was ridiculous

That was how I felt, just get gold and bolt. But no, like an idiot I persevered and stayed with it for the two weeks.
Following is my last post in the Australian section;

"Can't say I'm not glad it's finally over, now we can get back to sensible racing with sensible cars in the Seasonals.
Finished the same as yesterday on 3:31.840 for 190 in OZ and 3,938 overall. Earlier today I managed to get over half sec up in the 1st sector but could never maintain that lead and finish.
Did I say I'm glad it's over? Well I am, big time. Cheers everyone till the next time."

And my first race back in the Seasonals felt like driving on clouds, it was just so smoooooooth.

This VGT car is about as far from sensible as it's possible to get
Yep, It reminded me immediately of the Academy car. I certainly won't be trying to improve on my time here. For me it's just far too fast.
And obviously this car wasn't the one I was driving when I mentioned the smooooth bit.

I will give this a try. I did notice that 3rd gear gave it more stability, but didn't think it would be good enough to get around the track with a decent time. We'll see. Thanks.
