But why would you want to beat the RX-7? .....
Self improvement type of thing. Whenever I see two cars that run really close with each other in lap times, I always end up doing this. I set a time with one car, then try to beat it with the other car. It's not so much to see which car is better, but rather to challenge my own driving ability to keep two completely different cars in close competition with each other.
I'll keep at it until I finally hit a point where one car sets a lap time that I absolutely can not beat with the other car, no matter what effort I put forward to push the car as hard as possible.

Mine's BNR34 vs. Honda NSX Type-R at Eiger
(back in GT5 Prologue, I forget which car won)
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 vs. 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T at Nurburgring Nordschleife
(Camaro won)
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX RM vs. TVR Tuscan Speed Six RM at Tsukuba
(Tuscan would've won, but Roj's tunes are keeping this fight going yet...)
