The damage system in GT5 (update : Mechanical Damage arrived only for online races)

I thought it had been reported that damage was paid for at the end of the race...? Perhaps that is another aspect that depends on game progress... has anyone consulted the manual?

I read that too, but so far I haven't had to pay for any damage. In premium or standard car. I've just done a race in a standard TVR, and damaged the front, but nothing to pay for :S I'm going to post a few pictures soon.

I think unlocking more severe damage as you level up is a great idea. It forces you to play the game as intended instead of just crashing into other cars. The result of a crash will not be satisfying to someone looking for a burnout-esque experience and they will either get bored of the game or learn to drive properly. This system will help beginners to improve their driving skill by slowly enabling more realistic damage, which will make them drive more cautiously. This is still only conjecture though since I do not know exactly how damage works yet.

Your logic is thoroughly flawed and backwards. The gamespot guy put it best when he said basically "remember this is a gt game so ypu just bash your way to the front" and then detais how he couldn't win a corvette challenge until he basheed his way to the lead.

If anything no damage off the bat reinforces and creates bad habbits not careful driving.

A pity that the only real important aspect of damage isn't actually in the game yet.

At least those "cosmetic damage" lovers can Burnout their way around, but I'm sure they'll be complaining about the damage that is available since it isn't as destructive as Burnout.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the effort PD put into cosmetic damage would have been far better served elsewhere. I'll trade cosmetic damage for custom wheels on standard cars, or for split screen replays, or actual longer replays, or many of the cars missed out (Focus ST but no RS etc.).

Once again a simplistic, ambiguous Kaz answer turns into a sea of speculation and translations.

Wouldn't be GTP without it!

Perso I think Kaz means you unlock the more realistic "sensitivity" later on but damage is present from Day1 at a very subdued level.

👍

Heres a few pictures of a damaged standard car. It didn't take much to get it like this, literally tapped the AI a few times doing 5mph more than they were. None of the damage was intentional - the brakes on the TVR aren't the best :nervous:

I don't think it looks too bad for a standard car either. Please excuse the bad photography skills though, they looked better in game :P They don't seem very sharp out of game :grumpy:

And please note, I didn't spend time trying to make the standard cars look good, or bad. I just chose a couple of parts of the replay which looked nice, moved the camera a little, and took a pic. Make of them as you wish.

Okay... Where's the damage? Can't see any :D

Edit: I think I see some in the last pic

I'm not complaining but seriously these trees don't look like 2010

more like 99

lol

And I think you should wait until you have unlocked the complete damage system because in the beginning damage looks very, very poor.

Anyway

Thanks for the pictures dude.

I've removed the first two pictures, but in the 3rd (now 1st) picture, there is quite clearly damage :P The front corner is bent and there is a scuff on the door.

I'm not saying it looks good or whatever. I'm just throwing a few pictures out there for people to make there own mind up 👍

Well as far as I am concerned, the full damage model is unlocked straight away. I'm only level 7.

I will do an experiment now, I will take my premium car and see how much damage I can get. That will surely finalise whether it depends on level or not.
Back in 5 minutes :D

:) If yamauchi himself says: Damage will appear later you don't believe him?

however do what you have to do:idea:

Please do. If the "full" damage is like what we've seen so far I don't really mind since I'll spend most of my time on the track and racing cleanly but mechanical damage would be a welcome addition (it should be in, but it's not? Or am I missing something?).

Wow, sorry, I didn't realise that KY give clear details about features in Gran Turismo... :grumpy:
Later on could mean later in a patch, later on in your driver level, later on in the harder race classes... That's what I am trying to do - figure out what "later" means.

Well, I have just spent 9 minutes bashing my Vitz into walls on Tsukuba at 80+ mph. And all I have been able to do is knock the front and rear bumper loose, with a bit of dirt on the front bumper and a bit of denting in the bonnet. Basically, hardly any damage considering.

This was in beginner events. I am now going to do the same in an Amateur event and see if it is class related, rather than level. I will then do the same experiment in Arcade mode.

Back soon :dunce:

There IS machanical damage. I don't want to spoil you guys but tires get overheated

Maybe the full damage is indeed present from the start, but the "damage multiplier is set to, say -x20, so theoretically, you could wreck the car as much as someone on the 40th level, but it would take you considerable amount of time and crashes to achieve it.(the guy from that most extreme damage video so far, said you don't have to be lvl40 to destroy the car like that, but who knows how much time he spent crashing the car to get that "look")
Anyhow, I'm not happy with this game designer decision, and I would rather have an option to make it as real as it can be from the start, for me personally...

After a further 7 minutes, I got pretty much identical damage to my first attempt. Considering it is supposed to be realtime damage, regardless of what corner hits the wall first, the bumper fell off on the same side both times. On the front and rear...

It looks as if it isn't as realtime as they make out.

I guess that either confirms that the damage isn't very good, or we do indeed unlock it as our level progresses. If somebody who is higher than level 7 - preferably over 20 - could crash the same car - I would be able to judge whether the damage does increase with level. It is the premium Toyota Vitz.

haha told you... You have to progress dude If you want damage like this

I'm happy for the aesthetics to remain as they are, the thing I really hope they improve with a patch is the performance damage and I can't see why they can't. Surely they can create a compromise that doesn't upset the manufacturers and gives the game what it needs, that is add a race loosing performance disadvantage for poor driving or better said "take the bumper car racing out of GT5".

I would be happy if they had a standard set of suspension damage levels applied evenly to all cars so that depending on how hard you hit in combination with what part of the car makes contact the damage you would suffer would range from minor suspension geometry changes that affect handling and tyre wear up to severe suspension geometry changes that would make driving the car very difficult. This would not be too hard to add, surely it wouldn't upset the manufacturers and it would force drivers to race clean if they wish to win. Obviously if more realistic performance damage was included the AI would need some adjustment so that winning a race is achievable with good clean driving.

are you joking..... that video says that damage is there from the start... Kaz said damage would come later which means patch..

hmm you know

YOu are not the first one with this Idea BUT what's with the people with Ps 3 but without internet? wouldn't be fair right?

actually i am the first person with that idea i said it before any one else and got flamed. and yea not fair same goes with the fact the game requires the latest ps3 firmware to run the game :dunce:

The thing im most interested in is how it punishes wreckless drving with damage on in A spec races. Does it deduct credits? Do you get less level up points? etc

Exactly. Damage is all good, but losing licenses or points would be awesome. I love how IRACING does it.
