The Formula 1 calendar development threadFormula 1

Nice to see people jumping to conclusions like that. Ecclestone isn't cancelling the event due to money issues. In fact, he's not cancelling it at all. He has only threatened to cancel the race if the circuit owners and event organisers cannot settle their differences before the December 7 meeting of the World Motorsports Council. They're the ones who brought it on themselves.

But I see people are taking any opportunity to take a cheap shot at Bernie. Even if it demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the issue.

Yeah, the contract needs to be in place by this date because the 2012 calendar needs to be set in stone at that point. I don't even see it as a threat, it's just a deadline that needs to be met. No contract = No slot on the calendar.

Everything depends on how soon things can be sorted out. It appears that the owners of the circuit (led by Red McCoombs) are unhappy with the promoters of the event (led by Tavo Hellmund). They seem to be trying to cut Hellmund out completely, and deal directly with Bernie. It's possible that they deliberately missed a payment to FOM to put themselves in breach of contract, and then re-negotiate with Bernie. The risk is that this move and the Grand Prix of America in New Jersey have made the State Comptroller nervous enough to suspend the promised payment from the Major Events Trust Fund for twelve months. If the owners can renegotiate with Bernie, they need to find $25 million in just three weeks. The smart move would be to take that money from the construction budget, pay Bernie and get a new contract, then get the project back up online and either a) convince McCoombs that the event can happen in 2012, or b) find a new investor who can make up for the missing $25 million.

I don't think they'll need to delay it until 2013, especially seeing the way construction gets done here in Texas. Heck, I've seen entire houses go from foundation slab to full frame and insulation in just a weekend.

You have them little buddies from south of the border:lol:
But in all reality its insane seeing the freedom tower from my house and seeing 1-2 floors being built a week. Construction workers are getting faster and faster!

When I heard that Red McCombs was involved in the beginning, I figured it would be doomed. A many Vikings fans will remember McCombs like they remember the man who punched their mother. Almost ran the team into the ground with his lack of spending on talent. Couldn't get a new stadium built because the government wasn't going to give him the funding, so he sold the team.

I still hoped to be proven wrong, as I would like to travel down to Austin to watch the race.

Ah Ebbw Vale, I used to have a girlfriend who lived there. Horrible, horrible place

I see that, in the finest tradition of Welsh names, it sounds as if it's completely made up.

While a lot of places in Wales have strange names, Australia is no better.

Ampitheatre, Bong Bong, Come By Chance, Diapur, Foul Bay, Gingin, Humpybong, Knuckey Lagoon, Mount Buggery (a favourite of mine), Nowhere else, Poowong, Queanbeyan (I have a friend from there) Smiggin Holes, Tom Ugly (what did Tom ever do to you?) Wonglepong and Yorkeys Knob.

My mum went to Humpybong High School! Her and her family lived in Brisbane during the 70's.

There are some bad ones here in America. I know there's a Boring, Maryland.

I'm just wondering if the founders named the town after themselves or after their interests?

Sounds like Bernie is being Bernie again, guessing there was something he didn't like in the revised contract.

You said New York City...

The GP could have been called New York GP, I guess. It's now slightly confusing with the Austin track being "Circuit of the Americas" and the Jersey GP being officially "Grand Prix of America".
