Last scheduled commercial flight for the DC-10 was today:

With FedEx parking its final Boeing 727 last year, just a few L-1011 left in service, that just leaves the MD-11 as the final tri-jet in regular service.

Has the technological advancement of the turbofan obsolesced the tri-jet altogether? Or is there just no need for a modern tri-jet? For what purpose today could you make a business decision to develop a new tri-jet?

With the typical aircraft layout, there isn't much use to a trijet. You want huge fans with high bypass ratios. These naturally make more thrust, so you need less engines in total. Since they're also large, it makes more sense to place them under the wings where they are easier to get to.

However, alternative aircraft designs may yet make use of the trijet. One of the concepts for next generation airliners uses engines mounted over the rear fuselage to control the boundary layer.

Efficiency is the main issue, hence engines with larger bypass ratios. It just wouldn't be practical to put an engine that size in the vertical control surface.

Similarly, you won't see wing-root engines like the Comet/Nimrod of past. While aerodynamically elegant, it's just not practical to include such a large bypass engine.

I like the flying wing idea, but, the safety issues are huge. Simple things like evacuation become much more difficult when you need to cross multiple aisles to escape the aircraft.

I think open-rotor designs, which would potentially be suitable for tri-engine configuration, have been scuppered by aircraft noise restriction.

So I spend a little time each month on Dreamland Resort which is mainly a site about Area 51 (top secret aircraft development, NOT alien stuff) and they've been chatting about some mystery plains spotted over Kansas and Texas recently. Some are saying B2's, but the trailing edge of the plane in question seems to be different than the B2, also the "point" of the leading edges seems to be at different angles.

Thoughts?

I saw this a little while ago. Someone on Reddit suggested it was a Boeing X45C or something similar. It has a design which looks nearly identical to the second image from below.

As for the first one, there was another X plane mentioned that was a perfect match. Trying to remember what it was called...

Edit: It was the A12 Avenger. It hasn't flown (to anyone's knowledge) since 1991 though, but I think it looks identical to the first image.

Yeah, that does look close, but like the article says canceled in '91 so I doubt it would be flying now, let alone 3 of them together as spotted above Texas.

I saw a trio of these land at the airport yesterday....

Sadly I only had the crappyness that is my iPhone 4's camera...

This drone looks very similar to the mysterious stealth aircraft that was posted above. Anyone care to shed some light, as I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to things like this ;)

The mystery doritos over Texas are most likely something manned, as UAV's never fly in close formation unless they are in formation with a manned chase plane for testing. Also the Boeing X-46 posted previously has only a single engine, while the UAV's over Texas had twin engines (note the twin vapor trails behind each one).

A sample from the air show I went to the other day...

*F-22 pic*

Will post more pics when I get around to uploading them...

That jet is based here! TY is Tyndall, just east of the ol' home town.

I don't spot planes as much as I spot cars but I saw this when I was at Plymouth Canton Michigan

Looking forward to my summer. I'm going to Mexico with parents in July, which means 2 plane journeys each way. Later in September I am off to Kavos with some mates, which means another plane trip. :)

So in the best case scenario this summer I will fly on:

1x 747,400 (Heathrow to Miami, British Airway)
1x 777,xxx (We have a very tight transfer on the way home from Miami and if we miss our connection BA said they will transfer us onto the next flight which is an American Airlines 777)
2x 737,800 (Miami to Cancun and return, American Airlines)
2x 757,200 or Airbus A320 (What Monarch seems most likely to use to Corfu)

I'm just a little big excited. :)

I only have two flights this year which I am really looking forward to, but I am also kinda anxious about, since they are both on Norwegian's 787's (Gatwick to LA and back in July/August). Google 'Norwegian 787' and look under news if you don't know what I'm talking about! I have no worries safety wise but the thought of 20/30 hour delays then ending up on a scruffy old 'borrowed' aircraft afterwards is a little grim.

Still the 787 should be interesting as as well as being new it is the first time I've been on a 'medium' sized widebody. Previously the largest planes below this I've flown on are 757's when I was very young and a couple of A321's more recently, then there is a huge jump up to BA/Virgin 747 400's (still the best looking passenger aircraft in the sky):)

Would love to do a Lads holiday this year since I'm finally 18 but sadly most of my mates don't seem to bothered about one. :'( I guess I'll have to wait until Uni if they cannot be convinced!

Awesome, my parents went on a 787 last year and they said it was really nice. From my googling it seemed like most of the Norwegian 787 issues were earlier this year, so hopefully they should have it sorted out by when you fly.

Agreed on the 747,400, they are beautiful aircraft.

Technically it is just me and one mate going to Kavo's, being so late it was a struggle to get anyone else who had the cash (even though it was only £190), we only booked it on Saturday. I'm 18 aswell. :)

That is what I am hoping for!

£190 for a week in the sun is really cheap, if I can find something for that sort of money I just might be able to convince a few people to go. 👍

If you look for the first week of September on the Club 18-30 website (Subsidiary of Thomas Cook) you will see quite a few for about £200 for a week. This includes flights, hotel, baggage fee's, Transfer to and from the hotel and airport.

Cheers for that, I'll take a look. :)

I think they're all 200 series, regarding the 777s. I've only flown on once in that type, and I had lots of room in so-called economy comfort.

757s are usually 200-series for short range, but they've been around for ages in about a dozen seating configurations. Older is better, I've found, in terms of legroom.

I wouldn't get too excited about American Airlines 737-800s...seems any airlines' 738/739 I've sat in has small seats and camped legroom, even more so in the last 2-3 rows of the plane.

Monarch have a pretty small fleet so yeah I will definitely be a (757)200, if not an airbus.

I have never flown a 737,800 before (I think), nor have I ever flown American, hence why I'm excited about that one.
