Huge history fail in Galilei Donna. I only realized that now after researching Miyazaki a bit:

Galileo Galilei (the real philosopher/astrologist/physicist) didn't actually do planes. That was Da Vinci.

What happened? How was it a fail? I wasn't expecting historical accuracy. Now you got me thinking about doing some researching.

I explained why in the previous post. Galileo in Galilei Donna crafted flying machines. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's obvious it was meant to be homage to some dude who was famous for designing early aircrafts. The only issue is that they got the wrong dude.

The historical figure Galileo Galilei wasn't the one who invented aircraft designs. It was Leonardo Da Vinci. Galileo is know for his contributions to developing astronomy.

Galileo study motion, mathematics, and astronomy.

Honestly? In my opinion? Bar EXTREMELY few films, it's better than virtually anything Hollywood has written. I am not kidding either. It's also one very best F'N movies I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Eh, I wouldn't say extremely few films... although the percentage of Hollywood films that are great is extremely low, that still equates to a large number of great films.

I agree that Akira is a truly masterful film and is one of my all-time favorites, but I'd say that there's at least a Hollywood film or two a year that are as good as Akira, and in some cases even better.

Speaking of the plot alone, I don't quite understand why the general consensus of Akira is what it is. What is it that makes you guys enjoy watching an upset boy go on a rampage?

I enjoy how detailed it gets throughout the movie. I agree that it's a movie rampaging throughout the movie or about a friend who just wanted somethings to go his way at least once.

You have good taste.

Thanks C: Always nice to see someone appreciating [subjectively] good stuff ;)

Yes. I did, I know exactly how it feels when you go by close to where someone lived and the rush of nostalgia and "how did I let that happen" comes unto you. Worse part: I go by there almost daily.

I'd rather say 'WHY did I let that happen'.

The worst part for me is the utterly overwhelming feeling of powerlessness. Every single time my mind is set to that, I just can't help but be miserable to the degree of my colleagues asking me what happened.
And I don't think it's short before I get over it.

Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, back on topic before manly tears are shed.
SPOILER: Too late.

I'm going to attempt to start a discussion (again) by asking a random question.

What is the worst anime you guys have ever watched and why was it so terrible?

Lucky Star was pretty enjoyable after the first five minutes.

I've seen some bad shows, mostly stuff like Queen's Blade, High School of the Dead, High School DxD, and most shows like that. They have mindless action with over-the-top fan service and terrible plot. In fact, I think I was most disappointed by High School of the Dead because it started off strong and had such potential, but then it quickly fell on its face and turned horrible.

Also, not listing the terrible OVAs that I've seen because there's just way too many. Also Kill Me Baby was unbearable.

^ As if the title on its own didn't make it clear. They should change the title to "Kill Me Please!"

Worst anime? A-Channel. It's going to be my answer to all bad anime questions for a long time. Won't say it will be forever the worst, but hopefully I won't ever watch anything worse than it. I've mentioned my reasons about 3 times too many. To put it briefly, this slice-of-life show is essentially 100% filler content. This show has no significant meaning. It has almost no substantial material to give it any reason to exist that it struggles to fill up its 22 minutes of air-time that it resorted to creating slideshow music videos to kill time each episode. Filler was needed for a filler show. Yo dawg....

Let's take it a step further for the sake of creating more discussion. Let's put up all our worst animes together and duke it off to see who's seen worse.

Worst Anime of all time?Bleach, I didn't get into it like everyone else did. Naruto was around there but I would watch it here and there.

Hmm... Depends whether there's still something to enjoy if, like me, you don't happen to appreciate having massive breasts shoved in your face every 3 seconds; and it also, of course, depends on the context that the breasts are shown in. NGE may have breasts in it, but they sure as hell aren't used for anything that I would call fanservice; most of the time they're used to creep the viewer out, honestly. And then there's something like Kill La Kill where the "fanservice" is often used far more for satire than to titillate the gynephiles in the audience.

I will agree, however, that anime really needs to tone down the fanservice that's come in in recent years. Something like Death Note is fine, but a lot of shows have gone way over the top and it's honestly just offputting.

Even the boobies that ruin a show still don't devalue it to be worse than A-Channel.

Not even kidding. I'll still take something like HOTD, Samurai Girls, Muv Luv, IS Infinite Stratos over A-Channel. At least those have something exciting to watch.

I'd say that it's a struggle of powers, from Tetsuo being absolutely mindless to Akira having control of his power but still blowing half a city away.

Someone got me to watch Lucky Star once... :nervous:

It made Endless Eight look like edge of your seat excitement it was so boring.

Oh hell yes, Lucky Star ranks high in there. Also Rurouni Kenshin, and Trigun.

So would you say the timing of which it releases and how it impacted future anime that makes it the dominant special quality of why it's so highly praised and not so much the plot? In other words, (just about) everything but the film itself?

Naw. It didn't impact much future anime. In fact I'd call Akira almost one-of-a-kind. I'd find Ghost in the Shell a much, MUCH more influential film than Akira. Heck not even in production values as it was totally hand made and computers were just starting to show their faces in anime movies (see GITS again iirc).

I never found the plot lacking, the premise was there, protagonist-antagonist that were ex-friends etc. Maybe it feels a bit loose because most of the characters don't have a real purpose to perusefrom the start and the circumstances in the movie kinda just happen to them and they have to react to them. Tetsuro never wanted the power he got but he used it to his twistedwill. Kaneda never wanted to fight him but he had to. The movie didn't have this clear from the get-go and stuff just happens, but I think it solves all this brilliantly. It's also a big counter-culture call, with antistablishment references evident all troughout the movie.

Just finished watching Sword Art Online.

Great stuff in general, but at times it's unnecessarily cute and naive, a few moments made me burst into laugh because of their classic anime-epicness :D

Definitely recommended 👍

Ahhh... forgive my rudeness, everyone. My manners always kick in a bit late :C

Merry Christmas if you happen to celebrate :) May this time bring peace and good luck upon you and your families :)
