I just watched my first anime episode in months! *gasp*
Gonna try to make a habit of watching at least one episode of something a day, there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to manage that much at the very least.
So what was this spicy episode, you ask? Just me resuming my Major rewatch, which I abruptly stopped cold turkey halfway through the final season for no reason.
For the man who started this thread so long ago, I'll give it a try explaining it.
To me, I don't really talk too much about what I like, mostly because I usually like the shows not many do. Examples like Lucky Star, Initial D, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakomoto!, Nichijou, Steins;Gate, etc, are all the shows I like. I like shows that have action, comedy, suspense (not too much though, I like to keep my heart from exploding) and a few others; what I DON'T like is horror, gore, and "extreme" fan service. I don't tend to follow the mainstream stuff unless I watch something and it intrigues me.
Back to that extreme fan service thing. I know we all have our favourite things in anime, but I'll admit that a little T&A is fine with me. Make it subtle and not too much in your face, make it sophisticated, that sort of thing, it's fine. BUT, when you crank it up to 20, that's where it's borderline R34.
Also, tentacles; why in the heck do people like that? The ONLY time I want to see them is on an octopus using them to maneuver in the ocean, grabbing prey and occasionally inking cameras and/or prey. They're supposed to be majestic ocean creatures, not for... well you know.
Point is, keep it in moderation and we're cool, but don't show me any of the other R34 stuff because that's not why I'm in this hobby.
This is a little longer than I thought it would be, but hey it's different and reading is good for the brain. As far as I know, let them talk about idols (I don't care for it too much), I'll just keep what I like to myself mostly, and I'm definitely not a weeaboo.
I might talk more about some of my favourites, but that's another time.

Nice to read your opinion 👍. I think we need a discussion like this so we can have understanding to each other (and keep the thread on going btw). I agree anime these days were different than what we would have back in 10 or 20 years ago. Tbh I'm okay with fanservice as long it is mildly done and not obtrusive. Or perhaps if it could serve some purpose to the plot.
Also, some of the anime you mentioned is also my favorite, especially Sakamoto. That one is fabulous and hilarious in the same time . Dragon Maid is better than I expected. Like the idea of human being can live along with such mythical and powerful dragons in peace and happily together.
I don't really watch anime now, but the ones I do, it's either as a nice relaxing thing for me to do, the music (and characters) in the case of Love Live, an interesting story, or the art style. You're Under Arrest is one of my favourite all-time shows. It's not amazingly crafted or whatever, but it's enjoyable and super well drawn.
Anime is all about T&A if you're unable to get over it and look for the good stuff.
I'm watching this show where people get a bit too excited over crushing their opponents in high stakes gambling. It's full of young giggly girls and they often times make sexually-evocative facial expressions, but that's not what put me at the edge of my seat and said "WHOAAA I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE".
In any case, would I go back to rewatch previous content? I wouldn't mind, especially if it's watching it with someone who hasn't seen it before. I wouldn't sit down and rewatch it again on my own though. I could and rather be doing something else, but that's just how I value my time. Why do I watch it still? Rationally speaking: to add to my fanart backlog which I still haven't completed a single thing off that list yet. Otherwise, it's something I can give myself to do if I'm eating or doing sit-down tasks that doesn't require my full attention.
But why anime and not other TV things? I'm attached to studios who dish out high budget animations, voice actors that excel at creating the impression of deadpan humour, sarcasm, empowerment or mental instability, and I like the look of stylized hairstyles.... women's obviously.
Kill la Kill is more than just T&A, it's an honest-to-god massterpiece. (Bun intended)
But yeah I'll occasionally go back and watch some of the greats like Bebop, though usually not a full rewatch... I'll just watch a few select favorite episodes usually.
So my final exams concluded...and so is my misery from the horror that is Oreimo's finale. Because of that, I skipped past the summer series. Would anyone recommend me some shows of the season, better if it's a new IP, to watch?
Or should I just binge Konosuba and/or JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, or continue Initial D?

Guys, does anyone know any good airplane-related anime or VN? No, not like Strike Witches.
Watched The Sky Crawlers. Well... 6/10. Not what I expected.
I'm reading If My Heart Had Wings and I really like it. But I wonder if there's something more like this.
Hmm, I suppose The Wind Rises. There's also Area 88, but I haven't seen it so I can't vouch for it. Wings of Honneamise I guess counts too, kinda.
Zipang is a great anime. It's all Navy and ships and stuff, but there are some battle sequences involving aircraft carriers and whatnot so it almost counts.

Yeah, I'll second The Wind Rises as a suggestion. It is (somewhat) the biographical movie of the man who built the Zero fighter plane, so it certainly fits the shoe of an airplane movie... Area 88 is also a neat suggestion, but there's more than one Area 88 (the original 3-movie series from the '80s and a 12-episode series remake released somewhere around the mid Noughties), so be sure to pay attention to that.
Honestly not much new anime interests me. There's still older stuff that I mean to go back and watch, and I've watched some of Little Witch Academia, but otherwise it's pretty easy to get burnt out from most of it pretty quickly.
I think Western Animation has in many ways surpassed Japan in terms of the amount of quality work being produced in recent years. Occasionally something worth watching comes along, but I feel that the "How Can It Be This Wrong That It's Your Fault My Little Sister Writes Manga About Footballer's Butts?!!? Online" formula has become increasingly dominant and I honestly don't know why.
Loads of old anime worth watching out there though, and the odd new show pops up from time to time that's worth watching, and in terms of great films Japan is still doing pretty well (Your Name was a real treat, in particular).
Overall though I don't feel there's been anything on Cowboy Bebop's or FLCL's level for quite a while now. I might have missed some amazing shows in that time, but the most recent show I can think of which I'd truly call a masterpiece is Nichijou, and that's from six years ago.
Before that you start getting into stuff like Madoka, P&SWG, Gurren Lagann, etc. and before even those you get into that post-Evangelion golden age of the late 90s to mid-late 2000s where stuff like Serial Experiments Lain and the like could get made without some sort of skeevy pervy stuff having to back it up.
It's a sad fact, but when it comes to niche media, sex sells; and the number of anime which would've been a lot better if they didn't have to worry about returning money to production committees through upskirt figurine sales is probably at least in the dozens; but one can only overlook so much genuinely creepy stuff before one has to give up and turn it off.
Not that there isn't a place for dirty or bawdy or whatever media, just that sometimes I and a lot of others want to be able to just enjoy the actual plot and maybe share and enjoy the shows we like with others who might be less receptive to much of the anime out there, to say the least. Stuff like Keijo where the whole premise is just "butts" I don't have a problem with.
If you would let me share my experiences with my first year of catching up seasonal anime tbh I was kind of enjoying a fantasy harem few years ago. Date A Live as I remember was the first anime I watch through streaming (Before that I watch pretty much random anime titles in specific channel on cable television). Imo it is okay and enjoyable at first, but as time goes the whole formula and stereotypes eventually kind of getting bored and tiring because during that time the whole thing were literally stuffed by variety of fantasy harem anime. I have tried different kind of genre and shows, some works but some didn't. Not too long until I found my favorite shows ever : Kill La Kill. When I watched it for the first time it felt surreal. An anime with fantastic setting and execution also give me full of hype (and slightly nostalgic feeling from Gurren Lagann). Since then, I literally waiting every week for new episodes. After it ended, I decide to go focus with shows that have same vibe of KLK or at least have some compelling story and serious plot while also can give us decent yet fluid action scenes combined with sense of effort and creativity from the staff shown in it's animation, whether it has distinctive style from the mainstream anime or just going mad with details and pretty graphics.
So far there was hit and miss, but as year changes it looks like there is a certain increase of those anime with such criteria and quality. To me it looks like anime industry is still trying to experimenting on giving new way of thinking on creative process. Besides big named studio that we already know have reputation to pleased their fans with lots of successful titles and good reception, there are also those newly born studio that make a successful (or quite) debut with their first anime series are also worthy in equation to give sense of competition to older and professional studios.
Hopefully, we could see some changing trend for the next couple years. As now I'm okay to what we got from the industry as long we can pick a show that fulfilled our need. But imo it could be better in the future with more new groundbreaking ideas and innovative shows to come up with. Can't wait to see what happen in the future.
Also, sorry for a long post. I feel that there is something in my head that I have to share in this thread.
Hah, you'll love how much I've got to say on all this then.
I'm into a lot of what many observers would call 'trash'. But I get into a lot of series in spite of that. Why?
Because I'm not really what you'd call an anime fan any more. What I am a fan of, is fan art. And fan art =/= anime. What fan art is, is doujinshi. And that's what I'm a fan of now.
I'm not getting into Idolmaster (which I'll have my thoughts on finally written up by the end of today, I promise) because it's an anime masterclass. Well, maybe I'd find Cinderella Girls' anime great if I watched it, but judging by how I don't even like most of its characters, I have my doubts. But that's not the point. I'm not getting into it for the anime, or even through a great love of what I've seen - I really don't with most of it. I'm getting into it because I admire just how successful it's been, and I'm interested in just what has gotten it there.
In fact, I admire it even more now. Someone crunched the numbers for how many circles did what at Comiket 92, as is customary nowadays. I can't get hold of the chart right now (still at work), and I don't wanna sound like a clickbait website, but I could not believe just where Idolmaster's numbers put it. I'll show you what I mean when I can...
Of course, what really turned me around on this whole thing is Touhou; my favourite series of all time, and the most successful series in all doujinshi by a long, long, long way. It's not at the top of the game any more, but nothing else is ever gonna top it historically ever again. It's a series with fan works of all sorts at its very core - and when a series can get so many creative minds to come out and make stuff on such an incredible scale, you know it must be doing something right. And that's why I've turned my head towards doujinshi for the past 5 years - and not the latest anime in town.
I'll have more to say once I can get this EyeMass piece finished. And when I can get that research up that I was talking about.
