Anyway, when did Fiat get out of VAG?

Fiat has always been an independent conglomerate, and own the following:

Fiat
Lancia
Alfa Romeo
Maserati
Ferrari

Were you thinking of their partnership with GM that went sour a few years back?

That depends who you ask. Fiat got free engines, platforms, the works. GM was so nice that they even paid Fiat for the development of the 500 so it could later (theoretically) be badged as a Chrysler!

Not to mention the platform sharing between the nuvo Ka and the 500 as well!

===

(I don't think the 500 will be badged as a Chrysler, but it seems somewhat likely that it will be sold there)

Even more irony occurs:
Fiat just bought out the old Tritec engine plant not too long ago. Could Chrysler be given a reintroduction to the wonderful thing (comparatively speaking) known as the Neon engine?

According to the internets, the Fiat 500 (and Alfa 940?) could be here by next year. If things go well, according to the article, they could start building them here as early as 2011.

Hooray!

I live out in Pinckney Mi about 45 minutes from Detroit and I saw a 500 out here driving into a sub division a few weeks ago. I was surprised so I followed it. Thought I'd put that out here.

My guess is that they've sent a few over to Chrysler by now, seeing if they want them to come around or not.

In Case You Had Any Questions About FIAT's Chryslers

The FIAT 500 will be here in roughly 18 months (summer 2010), and all the rest of the new Chrysler products will be Chrysler-developed vehicles inside and out - despite their FIAT mechanical bits and pieces.

...Knowing that I fully intend to consider a 500 by that time frame, things could get interesting. If the rumors are true that Ford wants to bring the Ka over because of it, not to mention the new competition from the Chevrolet Spark, and the Scion iQ (face it, they'll do it), this is going to become a very popular segment in no time at all.

I would imagine that you guys will also get the new rear suspension that Fiat is apparently working on in order to make the 500 less bouncy and jumpy. Personally I think it's more fun being bouncy and skittish! Any word on wether you will be getting the Abarth?

Barring any surprises by a particular 2.0L Honda screamer, I'm seriously considering a Fiesta or a 500 in the next year or so to replace the Celica. To have affordable, fun-to-drive, small cars crossing the Atlantic in the not too distant future makes me very, very happy indeed. My only reservation is over insurance premiums, which could be absolutely horrid on the 500, and may end up being a deal-breaker for me. If I can nab a 500 Sport with the 1.4L 16V and a few extra options for less than $15K, its an absolute steal. Of course, that also depends on what the Fiesta will end up being.

Don't forget the Polo. That one will be near the top of my list when I'm on my feet looking for a good new car.

Fiat came bottom of the JD Power survey of manufacturers this year in the UK. Oh dear. I must say that I've been hugely impressed with my dealer service and not a lot has gone wrong on my car but it appears not many people share my enthusiasm and experiences. Just a word of warning for anyone screaming with glee at the thought of getting a 500!

How many people here are actually going to go out and buy a 500 anyway? I mean, honestly.

Yes, they were. Then they sold it off for less than what they wanted, and interestingly enough, it was purchased by a company here in the town I live in. Most-excellent.

WHEN IN THE HELL DID NISSAN GO UP FOR SALE????!!! As for GM and CRY if they go to the other hand that will bring the US car bizz down even futher.

LUL, WUT?

There was a proposal for Chrysler to merge with Nissan-Renault last year, but the deal was made earlier this week to sell Chrysler to FIAT following their declaration of bankruptcy a few weeks ago. So, both Chrysler and GM filed for bankruptcy. Difference with GM is that they're selling everything off. Saturn is going to Penske, HUMMER being bought by a Chinese trucking company, Opel to Magna international. Saab's deal is still up in the air, and it appears as though Pontiac is being placed on a permanent hiatus.

Autoblog Has Some Secret Plans from Chrysler-FIAT

What of them?

  • The Alfa 168 will be built on a modified version of the Chrysler LX (300, Charger) platform
  • The FIAT 500 will be built in the plant that has been building PT Cruisers, in Mexico

Those appear to be the most-immediate models coming, but there are a few others as well.

  • The Jeep Panda (you figure it out) will be built next to the 500 in Mexico next year
  • Alfa gets a new SUV built on the Cherokee called the "WX," and will be built right here in Michigan
  • The C-EVO chassis will be used to underpin a new Alfa crossover, and the next Jeep Liberty as well - both likely assembled in the US
  • The C-EVO chassis will also underpin the next Sebring/Avenger, Journey, as well as the Caliber replacement
  • The Alfa 199 chassis will be used to build the Hornet, not the previously agreed upon deal with Nissan. It sounds as though both the Hornet and Alfa MiTo will be built in Illinois by 2011.

Sounds like good deals all around, and it sounds as though we'll be seeing a full onslaught of Alfa vehicles in the future. Awesome.

omg omg omg I can't WAIT for this stuff. And the Alfa 168 should be interesting on the LX platform. Will it be AWD or RWD? How ironic that an Italian car is being put on a German chassis for the Americans. That new Alfa SUV on that link you posted was pretty cool as well.

And the Panda as a Jeep? Weird...

Unfortuantely, they won't be here for a while. Hopefully Chrysler can survive that long on their current losing lineup.

But, if we do get to see them around, Chrysler and FIAT should have some very cool vehicles in their showrooms. Maybe we'll even see Chrysler competing for top spot among the domestics, which would be awesome I think.

It would be awsome. I am actually chomping at the bit to see Alfa's across the pond. I am genuinely excited.
