I come from a pretty wealthy family, and this tax which varies so wildly every year is always looming in front of me. I wasn't arguing that it was a GOOD idea, but for what it's worth, for all the disgust people might have for it, it cracks me up that so many aren't ever going to be in a position to be affected by it. For me, it's right at the point where it could mean the different between an immediate retirement or paying an obscene amount of taxes and still feeling the pressure to continue working until I have an interest-only income that I'm comfortable with.

Again though, the number of people that actually have to deal with it vs the people who hate on it so much is a little weird and confusing to me.

It's called principle, you should look it up. Some people fight injustices whether they are directly affected by them or not. People who only fight for things that directly affect them are only looking after their self interest, there's nothing moral or commendable about that, that's what you're supposed to do. Fighting for someone else's cause as if it's your own is one of the foundations of democracy.

You want to hope that when it's an injustice that does affect you, there's lots of people who it doesn't affect willing to fight for you...

Heh. Let me see how well that would work.

*looks outside*

No.

That's because they were all locked up for injustices no-one else bothered fighting for...

First they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.

We're not against inequality for homosexuals because we're homosexual, but because we're against inequality.

Being affected by an injustice is not a prerequisite to recognizing it as such and fighting it.

I'm aware. But at the same time, you see the majority of the country calling for higher taxes on the rich. This is one of the most detrimental taxes that they're always trying to change, but since there are much more tangible numbers attached to it, the opposition against it is much stronger. I certainly don't mind. I'm all for not paying taxes on my eventual inheritance.

W.T.F. I can't believe this post exists, let alone some of the comments. Shocking. Move on from the dark ages, bigots. FFS. Stunned. Shocked. Amazed. Disgusted.

This kinda makes me think you haven't read the thread.

Why?

It's a lot more valuable to have the discussion than it is to pretend none exists.

I think the post title and the poll are shocking. Why should it be considered an alternative lifestyle let alone a problem. How about having a poll option like, it's a beautiful thing as opposed to OK, etc.

If it manages to expand the thoughts of any moronic bigots then maybe it's served a purpose. I'm all for free speech and believe these morons shuld have be able to have their say, it just seemed a little incongruous on GTP.

Danny, honestly I haven't, I just posted the news about Sir Patrick Moore and was stunned to see it. I read the first page and that was enough for me.

Oh, times change. I've had a personal interest in this thread (read into that what you like), and the response has been overwhelmingly along the lines of 'it's not even an issue' and 'please stop talking about it, everyone'.

Loads of people picked up on the 'alternative lifestyle' issue like you did, and there's been a lot of intelligent debate from both sides of the coin. It's very much worth a serious read. 👍

Don't judge it by the poll. :)

I'm delighted to hear that. 👍

I'll give it a read

The thread originated from someone expressing that sentiment.

How about having a poll option like, it's a beautiful thing as opposed to OK, etc.

That would be relatively similar to the poll question "Are you gay?" and not particularly relevant. The thread isn't about asking people their sexual preferences, but about asking people to think whether they have any business being concerned about what other adults - gay, straight, bi, fishlover - get up to in their private lives.

As you'll see, most people have answered that they don't.

Have you been on the fish sticks again?

That's up to them. I fight my own fights, and once in a while I choose to help someone else fight their fight. I don't expect anyone to join me in any cause, be it mine or someone else's. It's up to each individual to determine what's important to them and not up to me to judge anyone if they choose to join my campaign or not.

The rich are the new scapegoats in America. While the rhetoric is more polished and less blatant, it reminds me of how the Nazi's turned Germany against the Jews in the 30's and 40's. They are a tiny minority so they have no voting power to speak of. They are easy to scapegoat because they are so different from the majority of people, even though they aren't. Turn them into the enemy and the rest of the country, at least the one's that voted for you, will turn their attention away from the real issues.

You have half the country not paying taxes...a large minority paying very little tax and the top 1% paying half. The little guys have all the votes and when you're on the receiving end of government programs, why would you ever vote to not increase taxes on people you'll never know or meet and whom that party you support politically, villifies that same 1% constantly in all their rhetoric?

Godwin's Law has been invoked.

Does that mean the thread is over? We're simply bouncing around in circles like the God thread during the TankAss days, which, incidentally, hasn't been getting any attention recently. This discussion has overtaken it as the roundabout thread.

I hope nobody would ever have described me as a moronic bigot, but this thread did partially affect my opinion. I never thought homosexuality was a problem, nor was I ever opposed to gay marriage, but this thread did make me realize my hypocrisy in a sense.

I grew up in a small, very religious town, and didn't know anyone who was gay until I went to high school. I was one of those "I don't have a problem with it if I don't see it" people. This thread made me realize that is hypocritical and immature.

That's a beautiful thing. Good on ya fella 👍

I've been on a few forums as long as I've been here, and I can think of several individuals who have grown up in much more drastic ways over the years. A lot of people will come in here and say "you can't change what people think/believe," and that's simply not true. Having a real discussion that doesn't involve name calling and gets so many different perspectives can easily change ones perspective over time.

They have money. Money is power and influense. So I'd say the rich definitely have voting power.

Apparently not, because in spite of one of the worst presidency's in history, the rich guys' candidate couldn't get elected. The 1% have 1% of the voting power and no more and many of them vote for the socialists.

I came across a video, of a girl who tries to make the same points I have tried to.
Maybe she can get the message across better, so...

She's not making a point. She's saying she finds it annoying when people use "gay" pejoratively.

You must be feeling quite gay then.:)

I actually used gay for its original intention to convey happiness in an essay and actually got extra credit for vocabulary.👍

I always think of *this when I hear or read the word gay....

*Couldn't find an original West side story video shortened to this part.
