The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

The Porsche should be white, the Audi silver and the Toyota red, that would be perfect for me.
I hope Honda will bring some colour to the works P1 field.
The Rebellion R-One's supposed to be red/gold again.

Honda's colors are white and red usually (Japan's racing colors, in fact), so probably no dice there.

I don't understand how anyone can mistake one car for another... They're all vaguely similar, sure, but they're all very different. It's not like Alfa Romeo and McLaren in the early 80s, who both wore Marlboro branding...

Exactly. All this complaining about them all having white just seems blown way out of proportion.

Now that the TS040 is unveiled, I can finally express my brief opinion on this year's factory LMP1 cars' looks...
Toyota's new TS040 looks horrendous, at least when you're looking at the front. The front and rear fenders are almost bulging, and the whole car doesn't look sleek and aerodynamic at all. The only thing that doesn't look terrible is the livery, but that's because it hasn't changed much from last year's car, whose livery isn't all that terrible. (I prefer it in red, though.)
The R18 e-tron quattro has the best livery, but since the headlights are placed too far apart for me, the Audi isn't the best-looking car either.
Porsche's 919 is the best looking car among all three IMO. But its livery is too boring and could definitely do with some colours.
The best looking car overall goes to either the R18 or the 919, although I seem to prefer the 919.
None of them matches the 2009-2011 cars in terms of appearance. The 908 and the Lola Aston Martin in Gulf livery are still my favourite modern LMP1s.

Well, white and red, but mainly red, like the TS020 for example.

EDIT: Damn it, misread your post, sorry!
I think with Honda it also depends on the main sponsor.

Top speed per class

LMP1 (red) was achieved by a PORSCHE
LMP2 (blue) was achieved by a NISSAN (Oreca chassis)
GTE POR (green) by PORSCHE
GTE AM (orange) by FERRARI

Meanwhile I noticed that @Alex. 's friend, Fernando Rees, is there also and is now a works AMR driver. Good on him 👍

Can't wait till next year when Nissan comes back to Le Mans with a P1 car. It would also be nice to have the Peugeots back in the mix so we can have 5 factory team in P1. Anyone knows why Dodge, Ford, or Chevrolet don't make a P1 car?

As far as I can tell, the big three rarely have had any desire for a prototype and the only time they did was during the GTP era. There was a GTP Corvette owned and run by Rick Hendrick (which was a lola with Corvette cues and nameplate) but apart from two wins, it had little success.

There was also the Ford Mustang GTP, which first debuted in this form:

The Zakspeed Variation known as the Mustang Probe:

And the non-factory supported, Roush Performance developed car called the Mustang Maxum GTP

In all, only 1 win for any of these cars (The Zakspeed car) makes it abit less successful then the Corvette GTP.

I thought the same thing mate. He went quiet for ages but was doing well in the Corvette and now AM snapped him up. He's always had the pace so it's good to see it's finally been recognised. His friend and ex-team mate Juan Barazi (Who has an INSANE car collection including a DB4 Zagato and Zondas among others) drove the AMR a couple of years back, which can't have done him any harm.

Audi has been 30kmh off the top speed of Porsche and Toyota so far. Either their hybrid system is not working or its very weak

It's very weak, they're running in almost the lowest class for hybrid power.

Hated the GTP Vette as much as I dislike the current DP Vette that has hardly anything to do with the actual car Chevy tries to sale. Keep it with the GT-LM car since it's an actual production corvette built and then transformed for racing.

Because they have other places where they make innovation and actually Chevy does have a prototype, but it cheap, archaic and called a Daytona Prototype. If Chevy, Dodge and Ford wanted to create the type of innovation as well as lineage that more so European and Japanese makes do then they would go to the P1 class. However, if they want to sell their sports cars off the back of winning Le Mans and trying to make a link that is connected to the race cars they're derived off then they stick to GT which is what they've always done. All three of them. The three current manufactures have done both the premier GT class and premier LMP class, though I don't know if Audi doing LMGTP counts as premier GT class since I think GTS was the premier class during that time frame...

Another possibility is they could be in high downforce trim while the others are in Le Mans trim. Still 30kmh is massive

OT slightly but since you're at SAE now any chance of hooking me up with some decent recording stuff for LM ;)

Why would they be in a different trim for Paul Ricard, I mean I know it's testing but there is no reason to really run such low down force trims here especially in lieu to Le Mans when they'll be testing them there anyways.

GM had a prototype in the early 2000's.

Apparently the Porsche was in Le Mans trim and the Toyota was running high downforce.
