The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Oh and eco boost Ford Gt, please no.

Give me a time machine I wonna go back in the 60's.
Another one of these guys...
No, but they did announce that they would be faster than the P2's which most of us thought was setting the bar pretty low and they have yet to reach that high. If they don't do something about dragging the bottom of the cars it looks like they will burst into flames long before they make 24 hours.
Well I just saw an article while skimming through my facebook feed that said the P1 cars might be slowed down a bit starting next year. Then Nissan won't have as much time to make up. :P

Nissan looking good to win LMP2 this year with a factory effort!

How many times does it need to be repeated for some of you to stop trolling as if it hasn't. Nissan are making this race a 24hour test session basically for next year, not some major campaign, your comment implies that they should be set to win the overall from the drop, however you sarcastically knock them as only fast enough to win P2. Once again their goal is next year, this comment would hold validity if this was 2016 (check your calendar), and secondly they're not running the hybrid system, so we clearly don't know how capable the car is since it's a major component.

So hey, the joke would be hilarious if it weren't for context

I'm not familiar with these current ford ecoboost engines, is it possible ford are doing the GTE effort with plans on taking the same engine to P1 down the track?

And how many times the Nissan Patrol need to say that they aren't look for a win this year?

So what? Support, criticize and make fun of whoever you want. In the way you guys talks, almost seems like they won't win this year just because they don't want to. I find the GT-R hilarious and I'll continue to until they prove me wrong. Or it is forbidden? Everybody is obliged to cheer them on?

Thanks for your input on how I should look to the race and pick my favourites and all, anyways.

Just let it go. This is the same thing that happens every time a car with a new or unique design comes out. First they make fun of it, act as if they were right when its testing year(s) don't look spectacular, and then if the program fails they pat themselves on the back for being right, and if it succeeds they go on to say it is ugly, claim they cheated somehow, did something to have rules changed in their favor, etc.

They hate change. If these guys had their way Le Mans would still look like this:

But yes, the fact is that as long as Nissan are in last they're gonna be the butt monkeys. That's what happens with everything that comes last. The fact there's still even one P2 ahead won't help, for now.

The V6 ecoboost is Fords main push into turbo V6's. I think this project is to try and get it through us hard headed USAsians that a V6 can be a performance motor...we do kind of like our big thumping V8's here in the states :sly: The motor is similar to the one in the DP in the TUSC series, but I don't think they have plans for an LMP-1H. We are not much into hybrids for racing here either, unfortunately.

Not me, I love change. I wish Bowlby all the best, I even love the DeltaWing and Formula E, I was just expecting a little more. Then of course I was expecting a hybrid system as well. I guess that technically makes them an LMP-1 car instead of an LMP-1H this year. Just find it a bit odd that they announce the program and hype it all up before they even have the system near running. And I hope the bottom dragging ends up being a simple chassis/suspension change or I fear they will never see the end of the race.

One I support Porsche and there are plenty of post to show me doing so before this project came to light. Secondly I support intellectual honesty, which is what your post is devoid of. Also they wont win this year cause they don't plan to, if they had to chance to do so I'm sure they would. Nothing is forbidden, but if you're going to use hyperbole and take things out of context be prepared to be called on it, or is that forbidden? See don't play this woe is me just cause you got called on it, as the more wiser @FoolKiller said clearly I need to let things go more often.

Also I never told you how to pick favorites, now you've taken my post out of context. For the last time my post is letting all others know what you're doing is intellectually dishonest to the information we have been given and know to be true due to the sources saying so. If you have an issue with that take it up with the various sources that say otherwise.

Mate. 2012. Toyota did Le Mans as their first race. They treated it as race test and after the 6 hours of a normal WEC race were up they were fighting Audi for the lead.

Last year this was Porsche's third race. They came within 20 minutes or so of winning it.

This year, unless Nissan finds rather a lot of pace, they will be lapped by the LMP1 field every single stint. They won't find much. Why? Because of my next point to you know who.

Many thanks on your input about how to make a joke. Everything goes, as far as they are on context. Thanks.

They are fighting with a 475 BHP engine (according to Radio Le Mans) with no hybrid, against cars that have 580 or so BHP plus between 4 and 8 MJ of Hybrid so they are fighting with more than one arm behind their back.

People...can we stop RUINING Le Mans with this STUPID perpetual bashing of Nissan? Did anyone give this level of grief when AMR had that terrible AMR-One? No. So please, save us the pain, and stop. So they're slow, who cares? There is an actual fight happening between the Toyota, Audi and Porsche you know...and like 3 other classes.

As for the Ford GT with the V6T...have none of you haters heard the DP car in IMSA? It's the best turbo engine in a car to date (not counting Indycar...and obviously not the beasts of the late 70's and early 80's). Turbos CAN be epic. Besides, parity is the key to awesome.

To be fair those teams came in with technology that was pretty much proven in LMP1 already, just their own versions of it. Nissan is basically starting from scratch.

Actually they had to make the switch because of the CAFE fuel mileage requirements. Ford sells way more F150's than cars and they lower the mpg avg. for the brand. In reality the F150 ecoboost gets the same or worse mpg than comparable trucks V8's but in the carefully run MPG testing they can run the program w/o dipping into the boost and get a nice MPG rating.;)

Erm my memory isn't as great as it used to be and lemans wasn't as popular on the internet then but there was an awful lot of mocking of aston back then, the car was a running joke at the time.

To those saying that this year is about testing for nissan, testing what? With the car so removed from it's target set-up what useful data can they hope to collect, a thorough examination of the hybrid system? Nope isn't working. Testing of the engine map? Nope needs the hybrid system working to evaluate. Developing the suspension? Not much use as all the equipment and weights are different with no rear drive. Testing the brakes? Brake balance is entirely different with no energy recovery.

It would be like an F1 team testing their car by going to a mid season race with a touring car.

Oh well, I'm sure they will learn a lot about tyre changes and maybe if the weather is mixed the wiper blade.

Kind of thought about that too. Any experience is good experience though.

Armchair engineer right here ladies and gentlemen.

To be fair R1600, what did he say that isn't true? I'm not sure that any data acquired without the hybrid system running is going to be applicable once it's hooked up. I don't mean to be bashing Nissan, as an engineer I have followed Bowlby's career with a great deal of interest for decades and applaud both him and anyone doing their best to make his designs a reality. I just think maybe they jumped the gun a bit on this announcement and trying to implement the project.

Actually mechanic and one who knows the importance of testing something which is relevant to what you actually plan to use.

Sorry if that offends nissan fanboys.
The point is you are not sitting in their garage right now watching everything they do and in any sort of conversation about what data they are collecting.

Nothing but assumptions.

Keeping everything in mind, I was actually a little surprised that the Nissan LMP1 cars didn't run better laps during practice. I'm looking forward to see how things will unfold in the qualifying session in 35 minutes.
