The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I think I've figured out why the #2 is typically slower than the #1.

Thinking back to Spa, all 4 Audi's were on the podium. Why?
The 1, 3, and 4 scored top honours, while the #2 was up for winning the Green-X Challenge.

And then, at Le Mans, I believe that the #2 AGAIN won the Green-X Challenge. Maybe they have committed to running the #2 with a more Lean mixture, so they can not only be the fastest, but use the Green-X as a marketing thing, stating that their Hybrid drive DOES actually make it... errrm.... Green.

Or maybe its a coincidence. It's late, and I'm tired. So it's probably nothing.

Hmm. I found that a coincidence too. Maybe your right.. :sly:

Toyota uncertain to return to Le Mans in 2014, instead decides to return to WRC in 2014?

link : http://www.caradvice.com.au/177991/toyota-returning-to-wrc-in-2014/

I hope not. If they do have a tight budget up their hands then they would pull out like Peugeot did last year. The future of Toyota racing in WEC and Le Mans in 2014 is still uncertain at this very moment.

Doesn't make any sense at all.

I don't understand why Toyota would pull out of Le Mans after 2013 when they expect their TS030 to be fully developed around 2013-2014.

Neither does the money issue make any sense when right before they pulled the plug on their F1 project they were the manufacturer to spend the most money into their development. Toyota has enough money to develop any kind of project.

Third, but not least, why the heck would Toyota sacrifice Le Mans for WRC? WRC is arguably the most dead and boring motorsport at the moment.

I'm not seeing Toyota flee from Le Mans as fast as they did with their TS020 project.

What Toyota doesnt seem to grasp is that money doesnt buy time.

The reason McLaren and Ferrari are so successful at F1 is they've been in the sport forever. They know how to run things, they know what does and doesnt work. Same with Audi in the ILMC/WEC. Throwing money at something isnt a sure-fire way to suddenly get wins. If they keep half-assing their effort, and only commit to 2-4 years in a sport, they arent going to beat people who have established a record number of wins...

Former Citroen and Peugeot Sport boss Olivier Quesnel joins OAK Racing management:

link: http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/le-mans-quesnel-joins-oak-racing-management-group/

"The past four years have been magnificent as I was able to win almost everything on offer as part of a prestigious organisation," said Quesnel. "The page has now been turned and a new, equally interesting challenge has been presented to me. I look forward to giving this ambitious young group - who have already produced great results - the benefit of my experience and helping them to reach the next stage in their development.

"I have no doubt that my association with Jacques Nicolet and his staff will be successful and that his group can become one of the major forces in endurance racing. This is our joint objective entering into the collaboration."

American Le Mans is at Lime Rock this upcoming weekend correct? I'll be at Mosport when they come to town in a few weeks time, should be a blast :)

I was going to go to VIR for the race there, but changed places for Rolex 24; which I've never been to either track or that style of racing so either should be fun! Maybe next year if VIR holds another race.

If anyone does have some info on how things se to run at Rolex 24, like autograph/merchandise/spectating, would be awesome. I'm camping in 2 day yellow section toward inner turns.

This is the wrong thread for the Rolex 24. That would be found in the thread titled "Is anyone out there following the Grand Am?"

Does this mean Oak might actually put it's 6,000 entries to use? You'd think that just purely on Car-to-finishing position odds, they would have won by now.

Thanks! I didn't see that thread using the app, my bad lol.

Looks like someone's making a more artistic and dramatic version of Truth In 24 centered around Anthony Davidson and his drive for Toyota.

I personally can't wait for it, you can tell from this teaser it's going to be something special:

Don't know if this has been posted already, but found it the other day and wanted to share it with you guys part 1 of 5:

Also qualy for Lime Rock. P1 is actually competitive for some reason now. Wow Dyson lola takes pole from Luhr in the HPD. This qualifying session is crazy!

Woot! From 6 laps down to victory, that was a deserved win right there.

Here in the UK, the Motors TV Le Mans Classic TV coverage is pathetic. Either that or you're all on another channel. I have to wait until 9PM for 1.5 hours of "highlights", which is actually just interviews with drivers and lots of discussion, with no live racing.

Actually ESPN3 screwed up their coverage AGAIN of an ALMS race. Audio issues intermittently, and I think video went out once also. Audio for their little segments came on but no video (it stayed on a roof cam of the corvette for like 20 min, it felt like)--and commentators were talking about cars and incidents I couldn't see from the top of a corvette. Meaning they were seeing different video than we were.

Still a good race. I just wish they would get their $*** (stuff :)) together.

Yeah it was kinda dumb, I mean the interviews were interesting, but they showed almost no coverage from the actual event. 8(

Agreed. Was there a UK channel that actually showed live coverage?

Thankfully, Eurosport UK show 24 Hours non-stop live coverage of actual Le Mans racing every year. :)

Was watching on ESPN2 and forgot about ESPN3 for once

Guess because they were showing it live on TV for once, I got carried away. I did catch the final 20 minutes on ESPN 3 and again, it seems 1 second or 2 ahead of the ESPN2 coverage.

Oh the outrage if that happened during another racing series.. Great race though, I love Limerock. I guess Dyson had another weekend to forget, despite the IMSA allowing them to improve their car a bit, I just wish the P1 and GT class were like a few years ago.. Prototypes seemed to be attracted to the Ferrari 458s again, almost like they have "prototype hit me here" painted on them :P

You know I used to blame ESM for at least one wreck per race, but last race proved they get their share of bumps from other drivers, too. Proto drivers do not respect GT drivers' lines. Just watch an onboard from any given Proto car for one lap. You'll see them stick their nose where it doesn't belong at least once. The only reason they don't crash is because the GT cars go on the outside line to avoid a crash...

Although Limerock is probably one of the few tracks where they NEED to do that to get by.
