The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Man that's sad! I hope this series get stronger for 2013 and on! They need to look into the rulebook and find a way to bring in new blood to the sport. They need to look at Japan and perhaps Korea for new manufacturers...

All sports car racing seems to be hurting, look the the P1 class in the ALMS.. That being said, I'm going to Mosport this weekend for ALMS, should be a blast 👍

Yeah even last year it was just the two teams as I recall, though a little closer in power. As I recall mid-ohio had MM and Dyson at each others' throats for a good part of the opening stint. I don't remember the rest of the race except red flag/rain, but point is they shouldn't be allowing the only two teams in the class to remain uncompetitive to one another. I think part of that was addressed before the last race, when Dyson actually took the pole.

P1 has been that way for quite some time now, that's why the sanctioning bodies need to look into cost restrictions if costs remain to go unchecked the class will be Audi's intil they decide to pull off for whatever reason they decide to use as an excuse.

I received a phone survey from ALMS last night asking everything from type of oil and tires I use on my car to race viewing habits and rules for including hybrid cars in as a separate class or included in current prototype and GT classes.

From what they were asking regarding how I view ALMS race tested technology, how I view alternative fuels, how I would prefer something like hybrids classed in races, my potential interest in future all-electric sports/racing cars, and my awareness of the GreenX challenge I believe there is a lot on the table regarding how they can incorporate emerging technologies.

It almost seemed as if they were looking for fan reaction to the idea of allowing ALMS racing to become a test ground for alternative fuels/technologies. It will be interesting to see how things look in 5-10 years if so.

The rest were questions that would apply more to televising and marketing and advertising decisions. The one that stood out most there was a number of questions regarding how much race viewing I do on YouTube or similar online broadcasting services.

Anyway, if anyone's caller ID in the US is showing Nielsen out of Florida it could be this survey.

I think the ALMS hurts more than it should. Look at how deep the Grand Am field is...

I think that one of these series (Probably ALMS at this rate) is going to go bust, and then we'll have one American endurance series which should be legendary. I've always felt that if the Grand Am and ALMS combined their series, we could see some intense racing.
But good luck convincing everyone to throw away their DP cars. If this were the case, LMP2 would become the main Grand-ALM class. Im not sure how they stack up together, as far as laptimes go. And the GT field would have to be addressed.

ELMS though... I think the lack of competition comes from the lack of available teams. Most European teams who want to be in an endurance series are in the WEC. Expand the WEC a bit, and dont require AM/LMP2 cars to go to fly-away races.

Grand-Am feels like it's more popular because it's a nod to NASCAR (with all the oval-street courses, more bumping allowed it feels like also, and of course being heavily tied to NASCAR). ALMS is more heavily tied to a European sport with, it feels like, more European racers in the series and way fewer races throughout the year. Plus the two classes in G-A make for more position changes than one with five classes.

I much prefer ALMS to Grand-Am but watch both and see the difference in appeal to an American NASCAR fan.

I like both, great sports car racing!

I honestly prefer ALMS when it comes to GT cars as they are truer to the real cars they represent and not some tube frame monster shelled to look like the car they are supposed to represent.

Hopefully the teams will come and we will have a nice healthy grid at Road Atlanta! And hopefully the WEC will drop Bohrain from their calendar and return to Petit LeMans!

Watch me call the GP of Mosport-
Muscle Milk wins over Dyson
Level 5 wins by a narrow margin
Kimber Smith takes top honours in LMPC
GT? I'm gonna go Corvette, to be safe.

At first I was skeptical about that being true, until I found this.

I'm seriously stoked to hear this, Petit Le Mans will now actually have a sizable Prototype field and the GT Class will be even bigger. Sure there won't be no Audis thanks to the WEC, but at least we'll get a Prototype field we only see at Sebring and Le Mans.

You forgot GT-C!! You're fired!!! :P

Pretty sure no one is all that interested in a Spec Porsche class. I still maintain my stance that its existance is unnecessary because of the existance of the Patron GT3 Series.

I thought he was kidding/making a suggestion. Thats awesome. Although...

Will the Le Mans invites be given to 1st place in ALMS and another given to first place in ELMS? This would be unfair to the ALMS, who should have been expecting their own chance at invites to the 24 hour event...

See, I'm ok with the 2 classes. If the cars were run to the same spec, one could say that the Patron series is geared toward people moving into Sprint-Type events, and the GTC class is for people trying to get into Endurance racing.

Sorry, I don't see the point in having a Challenge class thats nothing but a Spec Porsche class when there already is a stand alone Development series thats basically the same thing (it even has the same teams. What the hell?). Again, don't see the point. If it was the European GTC class (which is NOT a spec GT class), then I would not complain because it would actually be different.

Budget Racecar, it's all about the budget. The GT-C class is meant for the same kind of competitor as LMP-C. It gives the privateers a chance of getting the exposure and the taste of endurance racing wich in turn gives the drivers a lot of seat time wich is what they are paying for.

DAMMIT I thought this was at 3pm like qualifying so I slept through the first half hour. Guess I'm going to wait for it to be over and watch the replay on ESPN3.
