The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I'd like more details on exactly what was wrong with the car and whether or not it was intentional. I guess this means that last lap pass by the Ferrari on the Corvette actually ended up being for the win.

They failed the anti-stall test during the post race inspection. What that means is that a test is conducted with the air restrictors blocked to see if the car would start. If it starts it means that air is somehow reaching the engine which bypasses the restrictors.

Both Flying Lizards failed the test, so did Falken Tire Porsche, and so did Paul Miller Racing's Porsche. I can't believe that so many failed inspection, I'm wondering if there is a flaw in the package provided to the teams.

Why were they DQ'd?

No idea!

Damn! If that's the case I'd say the problem lies within the sanctioning body and their tech team. No way every Porsche on the field was deliberately cheating!

So now I wonder, was this done by Porsche themselves, on purpose? Or is there an actual problem.

It cant be that all 3 teams sat down and unilaterally decided to do this. So that leaves only Porsche themselves.
And it's not like they had a huge advantage...

A conspiracy arises....

If it was IMSA's fault, why did ONLY the Porsches fail? They would have had to make the same mistake 4 separate times.

Not necesarily, they provide Porsche with a set of technical specifications for the restrictors so there's the possibility that the restrictors themselves failed to provide a good seal or it can be that Porsche's intakes somehow failed in all 5 cars wich I really doubt.

But you wouldnt think IMSA would change the Restrictors from the ones that were being used since the season began... This is the first i've heard of the problem.

"All V8 and Flat Six powered cars were found to have violated the rules"

IF SniffPetrol actually cared about the ALMS, they could have a field day.

Could've been the case, could also been something as simple as failing throttle body gaskets... What's really odd is them failing in every car after having passed pre-race inspection/scrutineering. Really sucks for Porsche and specially for Flying Lizard wich is the big looser here. Perhaps we'll know more in a few days.

I doubt it. Who reports on ALMS news frequently? Basically noone.

It must have been a spec part from Porsche failing. Thats all I can think of.

Yeah, really sucks that FL got their win taken away for something that's out of their control. I'll tune into Radio Lemans on Thursday and hope they have an answer.

Didnt think about them, great idea.

When is the next WEC race?

Honestly, it seems like a problem with the testing equipment, staff or method.

The testers themselves should have found the coincidence striking enough to look further into it.

For some reason, I feel some "Anti-Porsche" Conspiracy theories coming. What are the chances that every Porsche failed the stall test? If it was only the flying Lizard car that won and none of the others, then its just that team and nothing else. The fact that its every Porsche in the GT Class that failed it, Can't just be a one team thing, it had to have been something from the manufacterer. Part of me honestly believes that in Porsches Deperation to catch up with the BMWs, they might have snuck abit of something and unfortunately, they got caught. They tried to ensure somehow that a Porsche, no matter who, got the victory. Sure one of them did but unfortunately, it got caught and their plan really fell apart when the rest were also found with the same issue. Now I could be wrong and it could've just been a massive parts failure on the Manufacterer's part (like that issue they had with the grille for a while which they never seem to grasped was an achilles heel of their car) As if I didn't get enough politics in one series (Actually two), I now predict much more for this one. To make things even more interesting, IMSA has rejected FLM's protest.

The funniest part is that the porches didn't really seem to have an advantage at all. Henzler/Sellers finished P5 after being a bit lower than that most of the race, followed by the other two in P6 and P7.

Corvette was clearly much faster at Mosport. Jan was up the Porsche's rear right up until the pass by ESM slowed him down. I'm confident Corvette would have passed given the right opportunity to do so and without having to simultaneously defend against ESM.

Did they also dq or investigate the cup cars? I mean they're all porsches aren't they?

I hope thats not some witty remark towards me. If it is, Point I'm trying to make is that given all the politics about how BMW had a huge advantage over everyone else the past season, Porsche could've have been desperately trying to gain one and got caught doing it, though it could instead have been sort of failure. I'm also making the point that for whatever reason when something like this happens to Porsche, the fanboys suddenly start accusing the sanctioning body of going against their precious mark (refer to Grand-Am to see what I'm talking about).

Definitely NOT directed toward you, at least not in a way meant to cause offense. I was legitimately wondering. Sorry that the internet doesn't translate tone very well. No I agree with you that it isn't necessarily a conspiracy. But there's something suspect considering the scale, and you guys could be right to point out a factory issue. I'm no fanboy of Porsche, but I am mildly a fan of some of the teams, particularly Faulken Tires team and FL on occasion. I heard someone say "all flat-6 and v8 cars failed the test" which I thought was odd, considering why would all those teams purposely put themselves at risk to lose ALL points in the race rather than gain a few at a lower position.

I really doubt it was deliberate, if anything porsche would've gone with something more dicreet like internal parts, not something they knew is checked before and after every race. The more I think about it the more I convince myself of a faulty design, engineers can do some serious compromises in the name of lightness when left unchecked...

It was hawkeye who mentioned the engine types that failed, right above my comment :dopey:

But I forgot RACECAR was the one who didn't like GTC in ALMS. Probably why he took my comment to be snarky. Haha sorry RACECAR no offense intended.

I seriously want to go to Petit Le Mans next year.. Mid Ohio as well, and that's more likely.. For anyone that is interested, and I don't want to toot my own horn, but I was at Mosport this past weekend for ALMS and I've uploaded a few of the photos to my Flickr stream..

Yep Silverstone. Mid-Ohio, Road America, Baltimore and Silverstone all in one month!
Sweet!! Can't wait for Mid-O and see those Vipers on track!! I got a feeling there's gonna be some major sandbagging going on for those cars trough the rest of the season!!
