I would refine this to say the Sunnis may be the key to defeating ISIL. The discrimination against Sunnis by Shia in Iraq was a big reason Sunnis collected under the banner if ISIL. Not only are the Sunni religious nutjobs collected there, but so are educated secular Sunni Baathist elites. It may take only money and power to pry apart ISIL into its natural constituent rivals. Another Sunni Awakening fueled by serious dollars. and it would take serious dollars, because currently ISIL is floating in cash. Cash stolen from banks, from sales of oil, donations from near and far, and taxes collected from cities under their administration.

That's a tall order. It's been said that everybody in the Middle East hates everybody else. The US is trying to put together a coalition of states that are uneasy rivals at the best of times. Very unlikely Obama can pull this off. Turkey is a perfect example of a non-cooperating "partner". Their border with IS is wide open, they will not allow US bases or operations against IS to take place from Turkey, etc.

To make matters worse, IS seems to be gaining a truce agreement of most all the "moderate" rebel groups in Syria, thanks to the efforts of the al-Nusra front. This at the very moment when Obama asks Congress to arm and train the "moderate" Syrian rebels. What a joke.

@Dotini - I think Turkey's position on American forces is correct. Turkey has a large, well equipped army and airforce that is capable of working with the US (and has a long history of air force training). To let the US into the country would enrage some elements of the population and undermine the abilities of the Turkish forces.

I don't know if branding them as "traitors" is the right thing to do. Yes, they joined a foreign insurgency, but it's believed that many of them - particularly those from the West - are at-risk youths who were indoctrinated by recruiters. No doubt there are a few true believers in the mix, but for the most part they seem to be those in danger of slipping through the cracks, and who were targeted for that very reason. That's why governments take criticism for the way they have dealt with the issue - it's too heavy-handed and confrontational. Two men got arrested in Brisbane for links to an alleged terror cell, and snippets of propaganda videos were shown on the evening news. It wasn't a case of "join ISIL and kill infidels!", but rather a guy going around a neighbourhood, interviewing people. A lot of the recruiters play on the sense of community and the need for acceptance among young people, and they indoctrinate slowly - they gradually ease someone into radicalism, making each new extreme seem like the natural extension of what has gone before. That's why a grassroots approach is needed. You need community involvement to intervene against radicalism, because most of the recruits are young people and susceptible to the same influences that we all are. Whether they consciously know it or not, they are looking for something they can relate to, and they are going to find it. The wider community simply needs to get there first.

But do you know what doesn't help? The obvious cynicism from people like Carbonox, who like to present the "religion of peace and tolerance" as if it's the greatest lie ever told. All that's going to do is reinforce the notion among the vulnerable that they are being persecuted, and that the only way to avoid being wiped out is total, unconditional and immediate assimilation.

Last week a conference has been held by a Muslim community in Paris in which they condemn the actions of IS. There were 3 questions that weren't answered which causes "concern":

1. 800 to 900 Muslims went to Syria and Irak to fight, how come that the Muslim community and closely linked institutions have not forseen this? Community is refered to as "in close contact with families, priests and mosques.Also families are well known in their neighbourhoods. No Answer

2. The community keeps screaming out loud that IS (Islamic State) has nothing to do with Islam? Search the error! No Answer

126. Allah could replace nonbelievers with believers who would love him and do whatever he says. 5:54

293. The worst wrong is to forget Allah's revelations. Allah covers their hearts and makes them deaf so that they will never believe the truth. 18:57
     
     
     
294. On a certain day, Allah will present hell, in plain view, to the disbelievers. 18:100
     
     
     
295. Allah will welcome the disbelievers into hell. 18:102
     
     
     
296. The good works of disbelievers are all in vain. They will go to hell anyway. 18:104-105
     
     
     
297. Hell is the reward for disbelievers because they made a jest of Allah's revelations and messengers. 18:106
     
     
     
298. "Woe unto the disbelievers from the meeting of an awful Day."

310. "He who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge or guidance or a scripture giving light, Turning away in pride to beguile (men) from the way of Allah. For him in this world is ignominy, and on the Day of Resurrection We make him taste the doom of burning."
     Those who turn from the way of Allah will face ignominy in this world and the doom of burning in the next. 22:8-9
     
     
     
311. Whoever thinks that Allah will not give Muhammad victory should go hang himself. 22:15
     
     
     
312. Disbelievers will wear garments of fire, boiling fluid will be poured on their heads, their bellies and skin will be melted, they will be tormented with iron hooks, and when they try to escape they will be driven back with the taunt: Taste the doom of burning. 22:19-22
     
     
     
313. Allah will provide the disbelievers with a painful doom. 22:25
     
     
     
314. Those who disregard Allah's revelations are the owners of the Fire. 22:51
     
     
     
315. "Those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt thereof until the Hour come upon them unawares, or there come unto them the doom of a disastrous day." 22:55

325. It will be a hard day for disbelievers and wrong-doers. They will gnaw on their hands and wish they had chosen Islam. 25:26-27
     
     
     
326. Those who deny Muhammad's revelations will be destroyed. 25:36
     
     
     
327. Allah drowned everyone in the flood of Noah, and has prepared a painful doom for evil-doers. 25:37
     
     
     
328. "They [the non-muslims] will know, when they behold the doom, who is more astray as to the road." 25:42
     
     
     
329. Don't obey disbelievers. But rather fight against them. 25:52
     
     
     
330. "The disbeliever was ever a partisan against his Lord." 25:55
     
     
     
331. Those who cry out to another god with Allah will be tormented doubly in hell. 25:68-69
     
     
     
332. Many will not believe until they see the painful doom. 26:201

334. Stay away from poets. The erring follow them. 26:224
     
     
     
335. Allah leads those who do not believe in the Hereafter astray by making things work out OK in this life, so that he can torment them forever in the next. They will get the worst punishment and will be the greatest losers. 27:4-5

337. Allah will taunt Christians on the day of their doom, saying: Where are My partners whom ye imagined? 28:62-64

339. Those who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah have no hope of mercy. For such there is a painful doom. 29:23
     
     
     
340. "Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah ... on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers." 29:25
     
     
     
341. Only wrong-doers deny the revelations of Allah. 29:49
     
     
     
342. Those who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah are the losers. 29:52
     
     
     
343. The doom of hell will come upon disbelievers suddenly, when they least expect it. 29:53-55
     
     
     
344. The worst thing you can do is tell a lie about Allah. Hell is the home of disbelievers. 29:68
     
     
     
345. When the Hour comes, Christians will be divided into two groups: Those who believed Allah's revelations, and those who disbelieved in them. The believers will be happy in the Garden; the disbelievers will be brought to doom. 30:13-16
     
     
     
346. Allah does not love disbelievers. 30:45
     
     
     
347. Allah seals the heart of disbelievers. (And then he burns them in the Fire.) 30:59

359. Those who malign Allah, Muhammad, and Muslims will be cursed by Allah in this life and with doom in the Hereafter. 33:57

361. Allah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a flaming fire, wherein they will abide forever. 33:64-65
     
     
     
362. T"On the day when their faces are turned over in the Fire, they say: Oh, would that we had obeyed Allah and had obeyed His messenger!"
     When Allah burns the faces of disbelievers in the Fire, they'll wish they had obeyed Muhammad and Allah. 33:66
     
     
     
363. Those who challenge the revelations of Muhammad will have a painful doom. 34:5
     
     
     
364. "They are filled with remorse when they behold the doom; and We place carcans on the necks of those who disbelieved." 34:33
     
     
     
365. Those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will be tormented. 34:8
     
     
     
366. Those who strive against Allah's revelations will be brought to the doom. 34:38
     
     
     
367. Allah hates those who ignore his messengers. 34:45

369. Those who are cast into hell be terrified when they see that they have no escape. Then they will believe. But it will be too late. 34:51-52
