Got back to this to compare the new utlimate parts on my Stratos after putting a full race with my old setup.
So, old time is
total 26.31.822
fastest 2:09.588
optimal 2:09.0xx
Missed opportunity: still had 1 lap of fuel left, too much shortshifting.

Dang, I dont have a 2nd Stratos available to tune up and compare ...
Just in case: I would only install Titan rods and then see how much power restriction is required to fit back into the 600pp range, or maybe simply use sports hard.

-------------
Seeing I could earn myself the still missing McLaren Gr3. from the LCD, I gave it another try.
As the car is so easy to control, I asked myseld "Who needs aero?" Away with that! (not complety though).
total 26.18.026
fastest 2:09.025
optimal 2:08.504
I certianly knew about the effects on top speed and fuel, but this was unexpected.
Top speed without drag-assistance of any AI at 300km/h at the braking point, and basically no shortshifting at all.

Short shifted at 8.5k rpm, and pit in at lap 7 because it loves to eat front tires.

It's been almost a year and I've decided to pick this challenge up again. I will be creating a new leaderboard, since the PP ratings and physics seem to have changed quite a bit (my race time in the Viper for instance is a whopping 35 seconds faster than before). The rules remain the same: Any car has to be completely stock, with only two exceptions to this restriction:

1. I am allowed to change the tyres in order to adjust the PP.
2. Any vehicle with an available engine swap is treated as a seperate "stock condition" car (meaning, the same car can be on the leaderboard more than once).

Here's the first couple of times:

Thanks, all, for these great assists!

Technical question: does this mean street tires provide speed at the expense of control? And, conversely, racing tires provide control for ultra-performance cars, that is to say, Formula cars? Thank you for your consideration.

Not necessarily control. Racing Tires just give much more overall grip in general. Racing Hard tires tend to last longer than Sports Hards as well. Because of their tremendous grip, Racing Tires can mask some fundamental problems with a car / tune.

For instance, if the car has traction problems accelerating out of corners, the extra grip + you having to lower the car's power to fit the tires at that PP level, may make it seem like the car with the Racing Tires has more control. But IMO, the car is just easier to drive because you have more grip and less power to worry about.

The PP system will generally force you to pay a power / weight / parts penalty to use racing tires. With some cars, the power is so low or they break the PP system so much that you use Racing Tires anyway. Example: K20 swapped Honda Beat, Abarth 595, and Mini, and RX-7 Swapped Suzuki Cappuccino.

Finally, a warning: With certain builds, you may be able to run noticeably faster laps near the end of the race, BUT the car will be VERY difficult to control in the first 4 laps of the race. Several updates ago, the physics were adjusted, making the grip loss for Racing Tires in the wet much more sudden and severe. So now, you must drive on a very specific part of the track, otherwise you go from mediocre grip to driving on ice. Yes, on Sports Tires you must avoid these super wet parts as well, but the grip loss is way, WAY worse on Racing Tires. Driving that way is an acquired taste. A couple people in this thread can do it, but most don't bother because of how frustrating the first 4~5 laps of the race are. It doesn't make sense from a grinding efficiency / ease of driving / enjoyment standpoint unless you've gotten used to it.

If you want to trade grip for power, but want the car to be easier to drive for this event, go with Sports Mediums or Sports Softs, depending on which you can comfortably run a 1-stop or better with. You will see earlier in this thread that others switched out the Racing Tires in the swapped Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino for Sports Softs, because that made the cars much, much easier to drive.

Thanks again. Your response is the icing on the cake.

With the help of all in this thread, I was, for the first time, able to race competitively in this event. However, of course, I was not able to obtain a favorable finish because of my lack of control with the street tires. So, I've got a lot of learning to do, and a favorable outcome to look forward to.

Thanks as always to all!

Anybody who has early access to the corolla want to try it on tokyo?
I might give it a shot tonight, but I'll admit I only need to buy 1 more car to own all of them and my urge to grind is greatly diminishing. I've also ran like... 50-60 cars on this track. There's really only 5 or 6 that are really fun to drive on this track, maybe 30-40 that are fine but non very remarkable, and 20 or so that are workable but not fun to drive. I'm guessing the Corolla will fall in the range of "not remarkable but also not fun to drive". Once I have the 3M credits I need to buy the Red Bull X2019 I'll probably stop grinding Tokyo. Maybe I'll move on to Sardegna. I dont know. Maybe I'll just move on to Sport mode since I dont really need any credits any more.

Maybe a little like the AMG A45? To me thats a solid car to use on Tokyo but not what i would call exciting.

Added four cars to the list (well, technically three):
  • SLR McLaren
  • Hellcat
  • Hellcat SC
  • Honda RA272

The race in the SLR was a standard affair. It's a bullet on the straight and came home with a comfortable 40 second lead, slotting in in 3rd position and knocking the Alfa off the podium. The Hellcat was very controllable as well, however I don't remember it being like this before. I feel like I've had to wrestle it around the corners when I raced it last year. The tyre wear is really bad at the rear and you need to be gentle with the throtte coming out of slow corners, otherwise you'll need a third pit stop and won't be able to win. The real star of the show however is the Honda RA272. Thanks to weighing barely anything, it has virtually no tyre wear (even with SMs) and consumes very little fuel. This meant that any pit stops were unnecessary and it beat the competition by almost half a minute. Very fun car to drive! 👍

Ran a 26:56.374 with a fastest lap of 2:09.7. The Corolla was fine. It has good acceleration out of the corners, so it's easy to pass traffic that way, but the car has a funny grip and slip characteristic mid corner where things are good then it understeers for a split second, then tracks well. I'm sure something could get dialed in with the suspension to get it to work better, but overall it's a competent car. Nothing really exciting, though. I've had much more fun in the Subaru Impreza Coupe WRX Type R STi Ver.VI '99 (boy, that's a mouthfull). That car can do controlled slides and really holds its line through the bends. The Corolla was a bit of a mixed bag, but still very controllable. I wouldn't say I'm excited to take it out again when I have many more cars that perform better, but for a free car it's certainly more fun to drive than the latest Maseratti.

Sounds good, did you have a tune or just the usual add hp and mess with the ballast?Any chance of posting your tune if you have one,if not no worries. All good. 👍

Just in case: I would only install Titan rods and then see how much power restriction is required to fit back into the 600pp range, or maybe simply use sports hard.
Coming back onto this, now that the car is available in the UCD.
Old time:
total 26.18.026
Titan rods installed, stroke up left out instead, more aero for less pp and +2kg of ballast:
1693305485068.png

It could go faster still, but the subtle gain of speed was made me misjudge every single corner.
My head was like "why doesnt this work like it usually did before".

Interesting to me: with the change of parts, the gear ratios where almost set up like I did before. Just the 5th gear being shorter of 1km/h worth of clicks.

19" wide wheels, Type B for front, side and rear wing. No rear aero. Type C roll cage.

I did t spend much time tuning it. Just adjusted the suspension to my normal ranges for these types of tires and tweaked a bit to either add or remove rotation. Probably spent 2 minutes adjusting things.

New winners added:
  • Diablo
  • A220
  • Mini VGT
  • F-type
  • GT40
  • SLS
  • XJ220
  • F430
  • Engine-swapped 930
  • GT-R

I also removed the Peugeot 205 from the leaderboard and stopped racing rally cars alltogether since they are ill-suited to the track due to their gearboxes usually topping out somewhere around the 250 km/h mark.

That would violate my strict no tuning policy. I want to use every car as it 'rolled off the production line'. Therefore I've simply banned myself from doing any tuning at all (save for tyres). That also helps me to just get racing without being tempted into sinking a stupid amount of time into tuning.

  • Corvette C8
  • E30 M3 with the Suzuki V8 Engine Swap
  • BRZ with the same swap
  • NSX '17
  • Focus RS with the Ford GT Engine Swap
  • Giulia

I also accidentally ran the F-type again because I didn't realize I'd run it before. Ended up improving its time by a whopping 15 seconds and shooting it a decent way up the leaderboard, thanks to using SM tyres instead of SS.

No but there's a 22 minute one.👍

I revisited this with the W194. I wasn't happy with how time trials went so, thinking an older car might be the key, I switched to the RA272. I had to wall ride a time or two but I did it with six seconds to spare, no pit stops, and I earned the CRB.

After quite a while, got into Tokyo just for some personal fun. Ended up tuning a Corolla, since I kinda like the looks, it's left hand drive, 4WD and manual gear box. So all the things I look for in a Tokyo car. It is also quite capable, if not earth shattering with stock engine. This is a no-stop tune, and as such takes a lot of patience (coasting, high gears etc.) but the overall time was surprisingly good. The handling is really quite excellent already, though lots of fine tuning potential still. Custom parts = all type B.

If only we could get a Toyota Gr. C car in the game and its engine as a swap for this... The 2JZ swap should be coming at the very least.

The Porsche 911 GT3 (997) engine swap is one of the fastest clean run no-stop cars I've tried. This was a very rudimentary first tune and already it was an easy and quick run. Did nothing to the suspension and LSD yet. Stock suspension seems good enough, so might stick to it and just tune the balance with the full custom LSD (no PP penalty). Should be rather easy to get it below 25:30 run time. The top speed is super impressive, did 343 km/h on several laps!

Custom parts here: wide offset wheels and type A rear wing.

I've done this race quite a few times with the Maserati MC20 recently, got it down to 26:41 no stop. That was with max weight reduction (stage 3), manual transmission, SH tyres, wide body. Reduced the power to shift the power lower down the rev range, still needs fuel mix adjusting even shifting at the start of the red bar.

I also tried quite a few setups with the engine swapped Amuse S2000. After the engine swap it has essentially unlimited fuel for the race, but the best I managed was 26:55, as it doesn't have many options. To do that time I used wide wheels, and added ballast to maximise power, as it has plenty of handling, its biggest problem is lack of speed on the long straight. I used SH tyres. I tried CS and CM for other runs, but the car also struggles for rear wheel grip, so reducing rear wheel grip while increasing power isn't a great mix. CS tyres aren't that bad for performance but they wear out too fast. CM just have too little grip.
