It could do, because in theory they can sell it for anything they want. These are loss making products anyway based around the same business model as printer ink and shaving razors.

If they are willing to give away an extra $100 and maybe get that back with a few extra launch games people buy it will be a winner. No one is asking them it give away $400+ dollars like they did last time!
Thinking back about how the PS3 launched more expensive than the 360, you could be right. They could launch the PS4 cheaper than the X1 BUT I still think they will start charging for PSN or have different packages for sure. There will be a catch. Playstation Plus is already $59.99 a year? Where xboxlive is around $34.00 a year if you look for sales which happen quite often.

I am still undecided between the consoles. I guess we will see what happens after Sony has their E3 presentation.

Just so Americans know. £429 is our $599 no go area. PS3 was £429 and $599 in the US.

I think MS should be aiming around £350 or lower. At least even keep it with a 3 in the price, like £350-380 or even £399, crossing £400 seems an odd choice considering US is $499. I think 400-500 US dollars is fine.

US price before tax remember ;)

I could bet they simply set the euro price at a round number, 500, and then converted it into pounds.

See it this way, it would've been even odder if the UK get's it cheaper than the rest of europe.

I'm surprised even Americans aren't happy at the price, $500 seems pretty reasonable to me.
$500 is EXACTLY what I was expecting for the price especially with having a blu ray player and Kinect in one package. Not surprised at all. I will be surprised if the PS4 is cheaper. But it would be a smart move to win the next gen console wars.

But I find PlayStation Plus to be a much more attractive package, and you don't have to buy it to play in Multiplayer, that's the difference. Plus, you can get some free games with PlayStation Plus, don't know about Xbox Live really, haven't come across anything alike really.

That price must have surprised retailers especially in UK. Zaavi had it for £399.99 but just updated to £429.99. They should have done what Amazon were doing regarding price. It looks like the console will be a hard sell considering it is looking like it is considerably less powerful while most likely being more expensive.

Yeah they very well may try and claw back a cheaper intro price with a pay tier of PSN but if they get rid of free on-line that will be a massive deal breaker for me. Or they may make the games more expensive.

I wanted to change sides for this generation but all MS has done is make me not want it over and over again. I was hoping MS might do free on-line but I guess that was a dream too far!

Or they could troll us and make it $100 more expensive than the Xbox

Hate to do it but it had to be done

Also, god the conference was mostly abysmal for me :ouch:

Average US sales tax is about 9.6% (percentage from early 2012).

499$ + averageTax = 546.90$

The conference was pretty good until they just killed everything at the end with the European price.

I guess i'll buy one in two years+ and get Forza 6.
Most likely a reduced X1 at lower price will be avaible then. Without all that TV/Multimedia stuff... PLEASE! I don't need that stuff!

I'd probably buy a cheaper purely on gaming focused X1.
If they ditched the "always" online*, ditched the used games licences, let us know what their rental strategy is, ditched the always on Kinect, ditched the integral Kinect and didn't charge £430 for it, I'd think about it. But only if the reliability rumours weren't true.

Every single one of those points is a "no". They could show it playing with God's genitalia - rather than a series of FP games - but if it still had any of the above, it's a "no".

I'm guessing MS really aren't bothered about non-US sales again, just going for the home vote - the Euro and UK prices are ludicrous. Can't wait to hear the Japanese and Australian ones.

My enthusiasm for this generation is waning even further and it was about equal with watching a hamster corpse ferment already.

*We need a better name for this. Always online is inaccurate and the accurate version is verbose. How about "Daily Login Requirement"/"Daily Required Login", or DLR/DRL?

Sony has confirmed that games won't go above 60 dollars.

$500 for a gaming machine with blu ray and Kinect is a perfect price. Also keep in mind that's STILL cheaper than the price of the PS3 at launch.

However we still don't know whats going on with used games. Thought for sure they would clear up some of the confusion.

I didn't even pay $425 for my PS3. That Xbox can go kick rocks!

The tax where I'm at is 8.25%. :)

$500 would be OK if it wasn't so underpowered compared to the PS4

$500 pays for the Kinect and DVR, something Im not interested in

This $500 announcement is all part of the plan. Make people think "wow thats expensive" and then announce the $199 Xbox One with 2 year contract so people then say "wow now I can afford it" even though they will end up paying around $700

The conference was very mediocre. Too much CG and fake gameplay. Forza 5 looks like a forced always online game and they didnt show much new content, so Im thinking they dont have alot new modes tracks etc to show in the first place. At least thats the impression I got.

I'm pretty curious on how the Microsoft Index is going to react after this. After the initial launch it wasn't to good, haha

MS failed. Some games impressed me (Halo and Forza 5), but most (Quantum Break, Max etc) were games that been there and done that. I liked the 2 games a month idea, puts more use into my 360. However the price point is way too high, 300-350 UK Pounds is what I was expecting. I was concerned at the fact that MS made no mention of the DRM issues, acting as if it doesn't exist. I just hope Sony do the right thing and price it so it isn't a repeat of the PS3, and avoid the DRM. If they do these, Sony have automatically won this console war.

$500 also gets you a blu ray player if you don't already have one in your house. Many 360 owners had to buy a PS3 or a blu ray player to watch blu ray movies. Now they wont have to.

I am still surprised the next console is called Xbox One.

How does that jump to 700? I could have sworn a year subscription is only 50 bucks. 35 if you get it on sale lol. Unless the subscription price changed to $250 a year.

But the PS4 will have one too. And if that's the main reason to buy a console, get a super cheap PS3 slim.

Except for the fact that Blu Ray isn't really new technology anymore. Some people want it, some don't. The vast majority of people who want a BR player will already own one. Imagine if MS made a huge deal about the 360 being a dvd player...

Tumbleweed.

He's not talking about Xbox live. There is a strong rumour that MS will have a "subsidized" SKU that has a low entry price but requires you to sign up for a monthly contract. Basically, like a mobile phone contract. The down payment is relatively low, but in the long run you end up paying more.

What about the price of the new little 360? I'll probably get one of those since I need another 360 and won't be getting a One for some time.

Oh and the highlight for me was still the guy making this noise:

When that bird game had no sound.

Any idea on where I can read up on that?. I know I saw something at best buy for cheap, but the small text said you had to buy two yearly subscriptions, not monthly. Either way, a year subscription, like I said, is only $50~.

I was just pointing out his over-exaggeration.

nvm, im not sure if you edited before i quoted, but I didnt notice your first sentence.

No, I think it was you needed to pay $15 per month and the cost was $99. Spread out over 24 months. Total cost came to $450 roughly.
