Well, morning session on Le Mans and a slight improvement of my gold time (~300ms) - but look at that optimal 🤔

Those of you who use VR (I think @djolliea @crome @Evilmuffin @GlockPants )
  • Would you say you prefer it over flat screen?
  • Do you think it has contributed to your improvement?
  • If you used a different driving view before VR, do you feel the forced interior view is limiting? I use bumper cam.
Thanks

Moderators, I realise this is off topic but I hope youll indulge me. I know something about the skill levels of people in this thread so their views would be more meaningful to me than people i don't know in a hardware thread.

AAAAAAAHHH 🔥

Just like that, it clicked! Entered the world top 1000 and top 3 on my friends list. Buzzing with this time 😍🙏
Awesome time! Wouldn't be surprised if you improve even further now that it clicked. That's what happened to me anyway.

In order:
  • Vastly so. It's the reason I even started playing GT7 and became hooked. I am not even that much into motorsport to be completely honest :D ... and I refuse to play any other racing game that doesn't support it, now that I've used it. It's completely transformative
  • See above, I don't have any prior experience, started with VR out of the gate. That being said, on the rare occasion I do a test lap with controller on flat screen, I am completely lost - I cannot judge distances or elevation changes. It just doesn't feel real.
  • As you can probably tell by my other answers, I'm mostly in it for the immersion, and being in the cockpit plays a huge part in that. So no, it's not limiting, I wouldn't want it any other way. There are however certain cars that don't really work well in VR. The Lambo VGT comes to mind, which has very poor visibility, especially with the wheel turned in. But most (real) cars work great!

It is quite an immersive experience. My situation is a bit unusual as I must use the PSVR2 headset as my TV and Logitech wheel do not play nicely together with the HDMI smart link and I've fried two wheels and a PS5 twice because of it. The image isn't quite as sharp as the flat screen but you quickly don't realize it as you acclimate to the new first person POV.

There are some quirks with the UI, being the display is quite sparse with some race info that is quite nice to have. Sometimes weird glitches happen with the camera (head) placement where you get launched forward or back in the car and the interior goes into a wire frame view.

I can't say for certain if it's improved my skills any. I didn't have much time with my wheel set up on the flat screen. But when I was on pad, I'd use the bumper cam.

The added depth perception does add another level to driving. Picking good braking points feels more natural. But I still miss apexes and acceleration points about the same as before. Certain corners are better when you can look through a turn, namely the last turn at Fuji. I've never felt so comfortable in that final sector.

Ultimately, I'd recommend it to anybody curious and with the means to acquire it.

After VR I can't play on flat screen anymore. Being able to turn my head and see where the apex and the exit is at is hugh. Not to mention I can judge the distance to the corner much better.

As for interior being limited, not really. Once a while you will have the A piller blocking the view.....but again, you can move your head to get around it. There are a few cars that are annoying in VR like the Citroen GT, but they are far and few between. Then everything is forgotten when you drive an open top car 😍

Do be warned tho, it takes time to get over the nauseating effect. I know some people can do it no issue. It took me nearly two weeks to get used to playing in VR. I had to start with 5-10 mins session on a track that is totally flat....and would stop as soon as my stomach started to turn. Now I can drive for hrs...with the only limiting fector of my eyes getting tire.

There are some downside tho....
1. Graphic isn't as clear as 4k or even 1080p, but you quickly get over it because of the immersion.

2. Race info is really limited. You will have no idea how far you are from the leader or car in front or car behind or if anyone pitted.

But overall, wouldn't play this game in any other way!

I use VR but not always. Most of the time I'm faster in VR but not always. It's more of a hassle to wear and interior VR view can sometimes be slower than what I use on flat screen which is "bumper" cam mostly. But yeah I have found the interior view in VR can have its disadvantages on some car/ track combos for me, especially in right hand drive cars which I can't judge the corners of as well as I can left hand drive cars. There's pros and cons. No delta time is huge con for time trials.

How do you race against someones ghost? Tried that yesterday to see where I loose so much time but didn't get it to work somehow. Guess I'm a bit blind or straight up dumb 😅
No, it's really not that intuitive :)

In the TT, go to Settings -> Ghost Settings, activate "Display loaded Ghost". Depending on your preferences, choose an offset (which is the distance from the ghost, 0.5 seconds works for me) and whether you want to reset to this offset after each sector, which is helpful if the ghost is significantly faster than you and would otherwise pull away.

You can load the ghost either directly from the the global ranking, if you're interested in one of the top players. If you want a specific ghost shared by a player you know, you can look it up in the showcase section of the game (bottom left icon on the main menu), and add it to your collection. Back in the ghost settings, it will show up when you choose "Load ghost". HTH

100%. I haven't had any desire or reason to play on a flat screen since I got into VR almost a year ago. The sensation, as if you were actually driving instead playing a video game, in my opinion outweighs any minor graphical shortcomings or the lack of on-screen information (deltas, gaps, leaderboard). I've never been so immersed in a game before.
  • Do you think it has contributed to your improvement?
Yes. VR has definitely helped me develop a deeper understanding of how to be fast and more consistent. Depth perception and the ability to look around corners or focus on the apex make driving, and for example judging braking points more natural. Also, my spatial awareness is better, and even the actual physics make more sense to me in VR.
  • If you used a different driving view before VR, do you feel the forced interior view is limiting? I use bumper cam.
I rarely used the cockpit cam on a flat screen because it felt so limiting. I used the roof cam. In VR however, the 'cockpit cam' feels only natural because it's a real-life-sized 3D space, and it's not any more limiting than driving a real car. It's a completely different experience than on a flat screen. Obviously, some race cars have more cramped cockpits, which can limit your visibility, but I couldn't imagine using any other cam/perspective in VR.

Thank you very much 🙃

Did two more stints today - a second try with the controller this morning and a second try with the wheel this afternoon.

I couldn't get under 4:22 with the controller after quite a few laps, but I was quicker with the wheel and beat my PB twice in 3 laps (three times if you include a red lap), and managed to get 4:20.356 🥇

I was around 0.4s quicker on my next lap, but it was already red, but my optimal is now 4:19.5xx, though I think I'm done with this. Very happy to secure a gold though, and definitely benefited from the wheel this time around.

-

Thanks to @Tidgney for the replays - I was still braking too early for the chicanes on Hunaudieres, and staying in 5th for most of the Porsche curves helped alot. I was also being way too cautious on the last two chicanes, and cutting the last chicane makes a big difference!

I might try for 18 but this is such a long lap and I have so little time currently to grind. I fell like I have a lot left but it's not super interesting and I have other things to kill time with. Anyway, cheers all. This place is insanely active lately and it's awesome to read even if I'm not on as much. Thanks for all the tips and tricks, as always. 🍻🍻

@crome @GlockPants @Evilmuffin @BWX @djolliea thank you for the detailed thoughts. That has been really helpful.
I used to always use the vr on GT Sport, even though it was limited to single player time trial, but as others have said it adds a much more natural feeling to steering, braking, track elevations, I can only imagine how much better the quality of the VR2 would make it.

I used to use it mainly for drifting to actually be able to look out of the side windows.

I really want to get a VR2 purely for GT7 but I can't justify buying PS5 and VR2, I don't like spending money 😂, plus the wife bought me the PS4 and VR (and the wheel rig) so trying to plant that seed again 🤣

Eveybody have noted the correlation between the score and the car colour...
Seriously, is this TT aim to be a tribute to the Netherland?

Very nice score, btw !

My best time of 1'50.592 so far! I really hate the first two turns, you can see I took a shot at using the MT again and it went okay, but I still lost some time somewhere in Sectors 1-2. I think I'm doing all right at Sector 3, well that last tight turn before the finish line is a lap killer. I had about 5 good laps and I mucked up at the end at that evil turn.

I don't think I'm taking advantage of the full width of the track. I gotta find a better button setup for the gear shifts up/down, braking and the accelerating. I tried the motion sensor 2-3 times and I am really bad at it so that won't work for me.

Anyone got any tips for me? I'm trying to figure out how I can save time at the first two turns. I'm learning the MT well I still misjudge shifting the gears, sometimes I drive on the wrong gear, 3 instead of 2. I know one thing timing is the key for using MT to get incredibly super low lap times.

Solid morning stint. Although I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get a valid lap before the bloody marys took affect. So many restarts and even though I lost an hour of reality today due to the time change I did in fact find a second in virtual reality. 😂

Edit to add. Thanks @Tidgney your videos are so helpful. I’m sure I would be stuck in the 25’s without them.

Whatever happened to the smooth driving you had back in Bathurst?

While the Bathurst lap might not be the quickest, it was smooth and all the inputs were deliberate and meaningful. The RBR lap had lost all the smoothest and back to the sudden input for little reason.

It almost feel like they were driven by 2 different people.

Yeah, I lost my momentum at RBR. I gotta fight to the nail to get it back!! I gotta try to get in the silver range. What about the rest of you. What were your thoughts on my Lancer run? @Evilmuffin you're right it did feel different. I just looked at my Bathhurst run and that was a killer lap. If I had pushed harder I could have gotten in the silver range there too.

Chris, the first thing it calls my attention it's the fact you are revving the gears too much. You are losing speed. I believe the right spot for 3rd is 80 miles (130 kms)

On T3 up the hill (which you call T2 I believe) you can step your car on the green stuff on your left. Your braking point is somewhere after the 150mts board and before the 100mts. You gotta experiment with that and find out the right spot for you. Also, you can downshift to 2nd gear to help breaking. And then exit T3 on 3rd. Don't exit in 2nd. Break, down to 2nd, point the car out, up to 3rd, hit the gas and go.

T1 is more or less the same. My braking point is after the 150 mts and when you see a white mark on the wall on the right side of the track. Shift down to 3rd. There's a little piece of white curb in the breaking area, that's your turning point.

In both occasions, time your downshifts right to help stop the car and hit the right exit speed.

Edit: feel free to check my GT7 page and download my ghost.

Going into the hairpin I jump hard on the brakes as soon as I hear the beep to start sector 2 and drop down to second gear then turn in and change up to 3rd gear just before the hairpin and then get back on the gas
