Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2025

I do like that there's the option for both on-road and PA challenges, and the prospect of 3-on-1 battles is both exciting and kinda scary if those get sprung on you without warning.

Also, keyboard driving detected

Ah, the surprise handicap reset battle... if I'm not mistaken in the older games when those happened, they seemed to trigger at specific locations...and vividly recall one battle that was almost done (seconds from winning...was quite cross.)

I hope it is keyboard action, but I am worried the handling will be vague and yet too reactive.

ITC I know had a dialogue system that was a nice addition then, hopefully it's got some nice info at times

It was against specific opponents, and by looking at the rival bios you could get clues as to who would do that. In TXR 3 Rolling Guy No. 1 would trigger one as it mentioned something about his relationship with Rolling Guy No. 2, and there's also a wanderer whose bio says that if he struggles in a battle his mentor will appear and bail him out, much to his annoyance.

I'm pretty sure that's keyboard input in that video, since there's a part where the car moves left then quickly right and it has the exact same amount of travel in both directions which is indicative of either keypresses or a D-Pad. Also the way the car bounces after each small correction looks like the wheels are immediately snapping back to center, which you wouldn't get with analog steering.

I do remember that in the TXR Drift games it was a way to get hints about what conditions would make certain opponents appear, I reckon it'll be the same here to help with tracking down wanderers.

I hope this game becomes successful enough to the point where Genki can afford to include European manufacturers/specialist tuners in the future. Having a licensed Koenig Specials Testarossa or an Auto Garage TBK 911 Turbo would be the dream!

It'd be nice, but right now it seems that if you're not Polyphony, EA or Turn 10 (as in someone with nearly unlimited money to throw around) it's getting very difficult to license cars. Genki has said that negotiating with non-Japanese brands is a huge pain, and they're still working on getting Honda's approval.

And the tuner cars were included in older games as a way to skirt around exclusivity agreements (no mister lawyer, it's not a Porsche it's a Gemballa, wink wink), so I kinda feel like the interest in them has waned a lot since the actual brands they derive from are no longer pinned only to NFS games anymore.

Good stuff

This looks freakin awesome. I've never played a game in this series, yet somehow I get nostalgia from this. I guess I like the simplicity, something that's been lost in modern gaming.

Edit: I have to say though, that either the player completely sucks or the controls are rubbish. I mean, is he using the D-pad to steer or something?

I'm confident that's just good, ol' keyboard controls at work.
