It all been for nothing?! Oh well...However, how can I avoid this in the future?

You may be able to recover just the lines by using 'Colour Range' and selecting the white bit as a sample. Then, once all of the white is selected, invert the selection and make a new layer with just the lines. Then you can paint on the original lines layer.

I'll give it a go now and see what I can get from the image you posted. 👍

EDIT: It appears that doing what I suggested leaves you with a load of white lines around the grey lines. :(

Here's my latest update on the Mischa Barton vector. Total time so far = 4 hours. I've still got another side of hair to do yet!

Moglet, quick question: Do you fill in the colour immediatly after you've created the path? And how do you keep it so fluent? Would stroking the path very lightly after filling give a fluently line effect?

Also, about my Rolla, what about filling the car and then draw the lines back again and fill in on my way?

First of all I have a set pallette for this vector whereas others I don't. So for the hair I have 5 colours to choose from. I tend to draw out the vector with no fill colour set, so I can see exactly what I'm drawing over. Then I take a look at the colours within the shape and set the colour or a gradient from the pallete. It's best to do small areas of certain shades to get the colouring right. That's why it's taken 4 hours so far!

To keep it fluent I just use fluent shapes when drawing them out. It naturally occurs to me to click a point and then draw out a smooth curve! If it's not smooth I zoom right in and edit each anchor point by hand until it's perfect, or use the 'smooth path' tool.

I'm not sure what you mean about stroking the path though, all of my work is entirely vectored, nothing but the pen tool is used. The effect you see here is a collection of hard work and detailed gradients!

As for your 'Rolla, you could draw the shapes out and then draw the lines afterwards if you really wanted but it seems a bit of a long way round to do it to me. I'd just start again drawing the outlines but this time in Illustrator so the lines will remain all on one layer and can be drawn underneath!

Too bad I don't have Illustrator, I've got Imageready, Bridge, everything Adobe but not Illustrator :ouch:

I tried something for 5 minutes, I went in small detail in the left foglight (right for carview) but more detail can be added, am I going the right direction?

corolla2vectoredition2rx7.jpg

I just left the lights and everything else black just to get the biggest details so you know it's actually a car in there :dopey:

Too bad about the Rolla though, I could of course print it out and fill it in with pencils, should look good as well  (Be a show off in my class :sly:)

The foglight seems spot on to me, but the rest of the car has sort of shadows around the shapes. The windows are black but have a darker area surrounding them. Is that just the image compression?

No that's the stroking I did on it, I thought that would give an impression of more fluent lines to it but I noticed the kind of shadow creating effect as well. But thanks on the foglight thing, I'll give it a try on the whole front later and update my progress!

Thanks for all the help guys

*EDIT* The current black areas won't stay black so the shadow effect should leave once I've filled everything...I'll see what happens

Wow .star. your pictures are amazing, love the last four you have posted.

That Mischa shot is turning out nice Mog, looks like it is going to take you awhile. I am sure the final product will look superb. 👍

Bram, I have a way of colouring the image without going over the lines. Just have your outline layer at the top, set the blending mode to Multiply and have a layer below it to colour on.

Hope that can help you out. :)

Some older stuff that I never posted;

It's Mischa again! Although this time she looks a bit like Kryton from Red Dwarf.

A quick one I did of Elisha Cuthbert

I have also just now finished the hair on my main vector! It took me about 6 and a half hours but it was worth it;

Now, onto the dress.

Looks awesome Moglet, colouring still remains very complicating although I'm getting along just fine it seems:

Even if I do say so myself, I love the detail on the main foglight! :D

that looks quite good bram, really coming along nicely, i like how the main reflection looks so far on the car.

its been ages since ive done any vectors but i'll post a couple of pics of my old ones since im not sure everyone saw them. :)

Note: click on the pics to be taken to see them on my dA page @ full resolution.

My 2nd vector, an M3 CSL's wheel:

3rd, An RS4, very pretty car, i tried to add a lot of detailing, this was my last vexel using only blocks of colour and i was experimenting with some brushing on the wing mirror. The wheels and background are filtered through laziness:

This one was a test for me, experimenting with only gradients and also to see how fast i could actually do a whole vexel, it took me just 2 hours over a few days:

After a speed test i moved onto an uber-detailing test! One of my greatest creations, the Sportec GT2 vexel! By this point i'd come a hell of a long way and made something that really caught a lot of peoples attention, it got a Daily deviation feature on dA too (very proud of that! :D)

And my final (so far) vexel was a picture i'd had in my 'to do folder' for some time. Only once i'd completed the Sportec GT2 did i think i was ready to tackle this. I think i did alright :D:

Let me know what you think :)

edit: oh and inbetween all that i designed a tattoo too :P:

If I may ask: What's the difference between a vector and vexel? Details?

http://vexels.net/what.php

What is the difference between vector and vexel?
That is like comparing apples to.. elephants. Vector is a type of art, it doesn't have to look like anything in particular. Just like "painting" doesn't have to look like anything in particular, it is just a medium. Vexels on the other hand are a style of art.

Vector uses mathematical equations to create lines and shapes in images, it allows the shapes to be resized as much as needed without losing any quality.
Raster on the other hand works in pixels, when resized the image pixellizes and loses quality as shown to the right.
In all, working in vector has it’s advantages but vexels can be created in either vector or raster format since the process and result is significantly similar.

Here is an update on mine, I just finished drawing out the dress which took hours!

👍

I wish the IS-F was a coupe. so thought id make it one :D with just a random kit i drew from scratch, wheels, and small misc things. hope you guys like it

it was fun makin it, and actually more interesting making a wallpaper for it.

1280x853 Wallpaper

did this one on the side as well. Scoot rx7.

I have to agree, you have a natural talent. How long does each car take you on average? Also, do you design the backgrounds? Stunning work .star. 👍

Bondy, your work is amazing too. Love the last two cars, especially the Sportec GT2. Superb detail.

Looking good so far Bram, look forward to the finished work. 👍

You should go professional... (I don't even know if you can go professional in Vectored Art, can you?)

Looking good star! Do you use pure vector shapes for your work or are they 'tooned' in Photoshop using more than just paths?

thanks guys. all i use for the cars are the pen tool and masking. i like this way just cause i can still resize to whatever i want cleanly but also have my fades in the shading cause i'm terrible with the mesh tool in illustrator :yuck:

oh and the backgrounds are just plain raster images. i dont always see a real need to vector/toon or whatever youd like to call it a background so i just use a photo i took or just random gradients and things in the back.

hmm..... time concerned.... the is-f took maybe 8 hours to complete. and maybe just a bit more with the rx7 as i was having trouble with mesh wheels heh.

Little update on the Corolla:

corolla2vectoredition3kj0.jpg

I'm spending way too much time on this one as it's my first ever vector to be fully treated like a vector. Next time, I'm going for something simple: Basic shape, doors and windows and some colours on it without trying to get every detail in like I did on the black-white 'Rolla...

On that, my new laptop is about to arrive, I might give Adobe Illustrator a go
