Is Celtic the only team to be knocked out of a major cup competition twice before the main competition rounds start proper?

Yup. Go us. :dopey:

See in complete honesty. We are gonna get absolutely destroyed in the Europa. Years of penny pinching and profit making has ruined the team...the players who are leaving have seen it, Neil Lennon seen it too.

We've made a ridiculous amount of money the past few years and what do we get? A few loan signings slapped our way.

I mean ridiculous, in the sense of earned money, not oil owning owners or whatever.

Celtic are suffering badly from having no real rivals in the league. The squad can turn up at wherever each week, put in 10% effort and win. Then they face a hungrier European team who play peers each week and get tonked.

I think I said it at the time, but what happened to Rangers has killed Celtic too. You need at least a second team capable of beating you in every match you play against them to keep your standards up. Maybe a third too.

You haven't seen this team yet have you? Inverness thumped us, we were lucky to only concede one goal. I can understand your point, but most of this new team haven't played in the SPL and the manager is also trying to make a name for himself. It just isn't good enough.

The Rangers thing is probably part of the problem too, but even if they make the SPL, I wouldn't count on them even coming close for the next 3 years.

That's kind of the point. For a couple of years there's been no competition for Celtic - but Celtic have still been competition for the other teams. Inverness, Aberdeen and Motherwell have all come on a bit while Celtic have stagnated. Now Celtic have gone backwards the other teams can beat you every week - but the standards are still low. Evidently too low for European football.

They'll make it back, but they won't provide the week-in, week-out challenge unless Celtic have slipped back so far that they can. Which I wouldn't rule out - but at that point neither will be winning the league or trying for European football...

Wishful thinking, but in a cyclical way it could be that as Inverness, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Rangers catch up to a stagnating Celtic, the competitiveness of Scottish football domestically increases although they all fall behind in Europe. The change in competitiveness domestically would hopefully lead to better strength in European competitions, eventually, but we are looking at a fair few years until this happens.

That's fine, but rule 1 of GTPlanet is that all messages must be posted in English:

You will post all messages in English.
I appreciate the effort but "'ll losc" isn't English and, posted without any context with a picture of a stadium in this thread, doesn't make any sense.

Five posts down the line (three of which you posted in a row - don't do that, use the edit button) it looks like you're talking about the football club Lille OSC, who were eliminated last night by FC Porto from the Champions League. Am I close?

Arsenal leading 1-0 through Sanchez and looking good for their lead, Turkish away fans providing a good atmosphere..

Debuchy has been sent off!!

17 consecutive season in the Champions League for Arsenal, fantastic achievement!

You can't do better than Ludogorets Razgrad did last night.

After a 90th minute equaliser, they went to penalties, where Romanian Cosmin Moti scored one and saved two penalties to knock out Steaua Bucuresti and head to the group stage for the first time.

Cosmin Moti is their centre-half.

He will never buy a drink in Razgrad again.

Also, sad for Besiktas. They almost made it.

The draw is today at 5. Excited to be watching it from an almost (hint: not very) neutral view.

Chelsea have the easiest group by a mile I think....and City have the toughest, I think they had Bayern and CSKA in their group last year too...

Not a bad draw... Real will be a challenge

Some of the groups are weak!

They are weak because we aren't there! :P:dopey:

Bet Ronaldo or Bale will relish coming up against Glen Johnson!

What is the point of seedings again?

Arsenal who have a high seeding get the likes of Galatasaray and Dortmund and Anderlecht, all fairly regular participants in the CL, whereas Liverpool who haven't been in the CL in years get Basel and <random new team>.

A joke.

The seedings are based on prior CL and Europa League performance, but the pots are still a very mixed bag, and as such there is always going to be tougher groups than others. Arsenal did get a marginally harder draw than Liverpool, but there is very little in it. It could have been worse for Arsenal - they might not have made Pot 1 and they could have got a tougher team from Pot 3. They did get the top ranking Pot 4 team, but I can't see that making much of a difference.

Liverpool are in Pot 3 on the basis of their poor recent European track record, but got a reasonably favourable draw. That said, they did get Real Madrid and Basel are no pushovers - they have beaten Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea (both home and away) in recent Champions League tournaments, so I expect it will be a good battle for 2nd place in that group.

Seedings are because UEFA don't want a Basel vs Celtic final. Same reason for the World Cup; who wants to see New Zealand vs Wales in the final? Everybody.

Money talks and UEFA and their sponsors want the best teams in the latter stages of the competition. Really, there's no such thing as 'luck of the draw' when much is pre-configured at the group stage.

1) I'd rather it go back to a European Cup style of a Champions League. Not a 3rd/4th placed league.

2) Scrap the league system and make it round robin throughout.

3) I would definitely scrap seeding. Spice it up, make teams play and work on merit each and every year.

Real draw Bayern in round one? TNS and Portadown make it through to the semis? Tough titties, it's a lottery.
