I've always rated Hammond as the weakest presenter. I even prefer Jason Dawe. I must be one of the few people that found his hints and tips very informative and interesting. And when he was replaced, that was May's job for a short while.

I haven't watched the first few series in years as they haven't broadcast since about 2003/4, but I know how informative Jason Dawe can be in relation to motoring. I've also considered Hammond to be the weakest of the 3 for quite a while now.

May's at his best without the other two. Man Lab, Oz & James, Toy Stories etc - all more interesting and generally funnier than TG.

That's starting to ring true for me.

and I had no idea who Ryan Renolds was, but he's pretty cute.

That's another two penalty points on the man card Matty. :sly:
I missed this weeks episode and from the looks of it, it's not worth bearing with my slow internet connection for long enough to buffer the show. 👎

Has it really been 11 seasons since the last "epic race" on the show?
The Veyron vs. plane was season 7, and the only one since was the Nissan GTR in Japan, unless I'm missing something.
I think it's high time we had another one of those, along with another CCC. Stuff like that was what made the Top Gear of a few years ago sublime.

Race. To. The. North.

Which was way back in series 13, but it's my favourite "car vs." race because I like both cars and trains and both were magnificent!

The Jag XK120 vs train vs that bike one?

Yeah that was a great one, but I was thinking in terms of the cross-continental races of old, the Aston vs. train to Monaco, the 612 Scaglietti vs. plane to Verbier, the McMerc vs. boat(s) to Oslo, and the aformentioned Bugatti race.

Verbier Race

Jeremy, I've just calculated, is around about here... *points on the map, just east of Dijon* ...at the side of the road, talking to a... "gendarme". But, in a few hours time, he'll be up here... *points to the centre of Paris* ...in a place called "Le Bastille"!

Cue guffaws from Hammond. Oh how we long for those days...

Honestly, I never really noticed (or chose not to notice, one of the two) the recent downturn in quality of TG episodes, but remembering all the old ones from the early days really hammers it home.

"Now here's some useful consumer advice: if you've got a 612, don't tape up the wipers, you'll just break them"

Hammond is doing my bloody head in now. He's become the same presenter on every show he does instead of changing his presenting style from Total Wipeout to Top Gear. Obvious joke is obvious, Hammond.

James May, on the other hand, is an absolute legend. But, as others have said, he is much better when he's on his own or with a non-TG related co-presenter.

It goes without saying that James May continues to be the show's saving grace.

Also, Ryan Reynolds = ALPHA. MALE.

Jeremy's voice has been going funny over the years. Much grottier.

Probably due to the fags.

I've never liked Hammond - he doesn't really have a place in the show. His jokes are too simple/stupid and when he does eventually achieve something funny he drags it out far too much and just spoils it.

James May is a legend as you say. He is by far the funniest on the show - proper British humour IMO.

That was by far the worst episode I have ever seen.

I only saw the last section of it and I wasn't impressed at all. Due to being away at an international conference for the last two weeks, that was also my first taste of the new series. Suffice to say that I'm not going to be rushing home tonight to watch any of it on iPlayer.

Yeah, I guess anything with Ryan Reynolds in it is bound to not be good. I personally skipped a bunch of the film stunt thing just because I'd seen it a gazillion times before, only this time it just wasn't funny. I would pretty angry with Clarkson and Hammond, as well.

Did I watch a different show to everyone else? I enjoyed this episode and all the presenters work well together Clarkson is great, Hammond is great and so is May! - I always have a chuckle at the show whatever stupidity they are up to - I don't watch a lot of tv but have to catch up with Top Gear.

It's scripted, stale, formulaic and with cruder and cheaper humour.

Nowhere near as good as it used to be.

It's predominantly American humor so some of the jokes might be lost on a European, just as it works in the opposite direction when we watch Top Gear UK.

Top Gear America has come along way since the first handful of episodes. I actually find it better the Top Gear UK at times.
Its the same with the US Office, i dont find it funny.
But the Original office had me in stitches whereas most americans wouldnt find it funny at all.

I thought that this week was a vast improvement on last weeks disappointment. Even my girlfreind said it was good and she hates cars and Clarkson, so it must of been good!

Poor show, Hammond made me cringe. I must at admit, the Sweeney bit did make me laugh out loud a few times, but mostly because Ray Winston and Nick Love were actually able to put in a convincing performance, unlike JC and RH. So I didn't think that bit was all that bad. Ryan Reynolds was okay, although he's a total non-entity for me, SIARPC is still the dullest bit of the show for me.

But, and I can see others disagreeing with this viewpoint, Mays test of the Corsa Nürb. and the Fiat Panda was just plain boring. It just ticks no boxes for me. I've no interest in purchasing either vehicle, or any vehicle in that class, so any objective viewpoint is lost on me and since it lacked any interest, humour or visual flair, and worse - any imagination... what else was left to appeal to me, nothing? Fat people in the Fiat was the only saving grace in that segment.

The budgets of previous seasons have obviously past, so maybe we can't expect the scale and grandeur of Top Gear of Old... but it needs something new and original to live up to it's own hype. Top Gear at it's best is some of the best TV ever made in my opinion, but the good bits can now be counted per season, rather than per episode.

I didn't think it was that bad. Yes, the Sweeney thing (whatever that is) dragged on a bit. I really enjoyed the Corsa/Panda reviews May did (finally we get to see some non-supercars.) And the Corsa looked fast! Also, RR's lap looked pretty good, too, though surprisingly it wasn't as quick as it looked to me.

Maybe people's expectations are too high. The only complaint I have against the show isn't really a fair one. The presenters don't seem to be aging well, Clarkson is often under the weather, and Hammond's silly boy routine doesn't work as well now that he's obviously getting up in years. May's still May, though, and now the best part of the show.

Yes, the Sweeney thing (whatever that is) dragged on a bit.

The Sweeney is one of the best TV shows to come out of Britain in the 1970s and is the cornerstone of ITV4 along with Minder, The Professionals and The Saint.

I agree that Top Gear has been better in the past (comedy value has been extremely good - had me rolling around on the floor in stitches) and the current batch of episodes have been average in comparison. It still has me laughing out loud and looking forward to the next installment so I think the bar was raised too high and now people expect the same week in week out.

All three presenters are legends. I will still be tuning in next week (or probably getting it on Cacth Up TV).

Now? Now? May has always been the best part of TG.

Correct!

Well this was the first episode that I didn't watch all the way through. I switched off midway through part one of the Sweeney bit. First time since it came back that I've done that.

I agree with the pro-May sentiment. Hammond is the worst of the trio.

What they need to do is another cheap car challenge. I'd love to see them try to buy a Japanese car for under £3,000 and do a bunch of challenges in Japan. :D
