Hamster attends TG Awards

Richard Hammond celebrated his first day of filming for the new series of Top Gear by attending the TG Cars of the Year Awards last Thursday.

On his first night out since his jet car accident in September, Richard was accompanied by co-presenters James May and Jeremy Clarkson, who confirmed that the first episode of the new series is due to air on January 28 at 8pm on BBC2.
Lego's Andy Woodman presented Richard with a scale model of the infamous Vampire jet car and a Lego version of the Top Gear studio set, complete with presenters and, of course, a tiny Stig. This followed Richard's recent announcement that playing with Lego blocks had aided his swift recovery.

Richard was also crowned one of Top Gear magazine's Men of the Year at the awards ceremony, which saw Jeremy and TG magazine editor Michael Harvey handing out the BAFTA-inspired gongs to the Cars of the Year category winners.

We've been counting down the nominations for the past week, but the place to see the full list of winners is in the Awards issue of Top Gear magazine, on sale today.

For those who are outside UK: Interview with Richard Hammond after the crash where he and Johnathan Ross talk about what was it like to have short term memory lost.

I hadn't seen that yet, I was out when it was on adn the repeat started at some stupid hour on another day 👍.

I think this picture will show why the car crashed...

(notice the front right tyre...)

The BBC have released this image - the full video is to be shown on Top Gear next Sunday (28th).

Wow, a front right blowout at 300mph. Not good!

Where did you find this? Is there an article to go with it?

*edit*
NM found it.

In the latest edition of TopGear magazine thay have the crash played out in photo's, the blowout at 200+mph then the car jerked sideways then the front lifted off the ground (the pic in Famines post).

I was shocked to hear that they said his head made a divot in the ground when it was rolling over the grass. I'd have thought the rollbars would've strong enough?

Should be an interesting video and will show the sheer strength of the vehicle that allowed him to recover quickly and with little or no long term effects.

Should be good on Sunday night.

Kinda crept up on me! Cant believe the new series is going to start in two days. So much has happened in between. I wonder if it will still be the same?

Rollover hoops on open cars are strong enough, the problem is that grass is rather soft and the hoop will dig into the grass and force the drivers head into it as well. A similar thing can happen in open cars in gravel traps, one of the reasons that F1 circuits have moved to concrete run-off areas recently.

Here is what they are saying, will feature on this weeks show:

Men at work
Why do roadworks take so long? It's a question that's vexed every one of us as we sit stationary, gazing glazen-eyed at a builder armed with a stop-go sign and massive arse cleavage. Surely there must be a better way?

With the aid of just 32 of Warwickshire's finest road workers, a quarryful of tarmac and an incredibly irritating megaphone, the boys try to complete a week's worth of road repairs in just 24 hours. How hard can it be?

Fast food
This week's studio guest Jamie Oliver was on a mission to prove he could set a tasty lap time rather than make a dog's dinner of our Reasonably Priced Car.

After nearly flattening us at Gambon - twice - and demonstrating a couple of the most spectacular fishtail slides we've ever seen on our icy test track, Jamie eventually got to grips with the non-stick circuit (see what we did there?) and even managed to fry the Lacetti's radiator. Smoking stuff.

Jaguar XKR v Aston Martin V8 Vantage
What better way to celebrate the return of the best show in Britain (hell, the world) than thrash a couple of the finest sports cars in Britain (hell, the world) around our test track? We've never seen Jeremy more torn - will he plump for the gorgeous Vantage or the Jag's supercharged XKR, with an engine note like "Tom Jones gargling a NASCAR"? Oh, how we've missed those metaphors...

Hammond's shunt
It's the big one. Like a scary film, you know what's coming. You want to shut your eyes, but somehow you can't look away. Whatever you've read about Hammond's jet car accident, you won't be quite prepared for it. It even shut JC up. Don't miss it.

Watch more
So that's what's on the show, but the TG coverage doesn't end at 9pm on Sunday. Oh no. The techies at TopGear.com have been beavering away to create an awesome 3D reconstruction of Hammond's crash, using detailed telemetry from the Vampire's black box.

The animation gives you an amazing insight into the G-forces and impact of the high-speed crash. It goes live as the show ends.

And that's not all. As soon as you've seen the video and watched the reconstruction, we want to know what you think. Richard will be posting a blog on the site at 9pm, and we'll be giving you the chance to respond.

Sounds awesome. I can't wait to see the Jag against the Aston. Lets hope the British are quick with the YouTube postings, as that is about all we have here in America...

The roll bars were strong enough, the ground wasn't and the roll bars sunk in when it landed.

The Veyron is back then for what looked like a top speed test, let's hope it does a lap of the track this time as well.

I believe I remember hearing James May say that he gets to take the Veyron full-out after he turned down the opportunity to set the speed record in Britain, which of course Hammond in turn did. There was something about how he was too much of a pansy to drive the drag car, but was enough of a "numbers guy" to take the wheel of the Veyron and cup up 50 MPH short of the rocket car. Hmmm. Still, interesting to see no-less.
