Did anyone else get the feeling to go out and buy a Hilux after that? That car is amazing. Not only the strength to withstand (almost) of Jeremy ramming it into blocks of ice. But that the engine mechanicals started and worked perfectly in -30 degree conditions for days.

I did watch the video (...don't ask me how...) and I was quite impressed. If it is a preview of what to expect in the upcoming series (assuming there is one), then I am quite excited. Jeremy and James were far more fun to watch than Richard, and I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would actually want to go there with the dogs.

I too was quite impressed with the Hilux as well, which I believe is similar to our US-Spec Tacoma, although I may be mistaken. Oddly enough, the Tacoma isn't usually regarded as too tough of a truck here, particularly in it's class. But, clearly, the rest of the world receives a superior model by comparison to ours...

Do remember that that wasn't a normal out of the shop Hilux. Had quite a lot of mods on it.

That episode was amazing, not for being TopGear but for what it was (a spin off special) it was brilliant.

The North Pole is not on a land mass, rather a frozen sea (admittedly a permanently frozen one).... ...so placing a monument would be pointless as the ice does move, so it would end up in the wrong place.

Oh rite, thanks for the info :) 👍

I also got the feeling of wanting to buy a Hilux after that... was simply stunning....

Any car which can smash through terrain like this...

...gets my vote!

Top Gear has used 3 Hilux's now, the one that they couldnt kill, and Jeremy's ToyBOTA which was so impressive as a boat!

Robin :)

I'm currently downloading the whole Top Gear Polar Special episode for free, and perfectly legally :D

Me too, I think... Well, no one came to arrest me so far. :D

Actually it's been in my computer for a few days already but I'll only be able to watch it on saturday I guess. :(

Are you using the BBC iPlayer? It's a beta version at the moment, and it's a bit quirky... I downloaded the full episode and just tried to play it, only to be told that I don't have the license to play that file :grumpy: ... so I'm trying it again. You have to watch it within 26 days and it gets deleted from your computer 7 days after you first watch it...

No, I was just kidding about the legal part. :P

These BBC videos are available only for UK users anyway, as far as I know. I got it on torrent.

@DWA - No, it was a single special episode.

it's not only the ice that moves, but the magnetic pole as well. it wobbles slightly, so there's quite a distance between them, and if I recall right, the poles swap places every now and then. :dunce:

Yeah, they have done quite a few times over history.

It'll be scary when it happens again - everyone scrambling to update stuff as North is now South. But I guess with GPS (or a future technology) it'll be less of a problem. All those animals they reckon navigate by the magnetic fields will be screwed though!

The magnetic poles move around (and occasionally swap), but the geographic pole (the top of the spinning axis) is fairly fixed. I say fairly in that the axis can move around, but over gazillions of years. The Earth's spin axis and tilt are actually stabilized by having such a large (relative to the planet) moon.

I was confused by the GPS reading they had at the "north pole," which ought to be 90 degrees latitude. Apparently they went to the north magnetic pole. Which is cheating, it's not as far north. :sly:

I saw an ad. earlier in the week which indicates we'll be seeing the Top Gear Winter Olympics Special this weekend.

Very late, but yay!

We had the repeat of that ep here in the UK on Sunday just gone. If you haven't seen it you'll enjoy it; it's all very funny and the ice drifting is a joy to watch :)

They went to the 1996 certified position of the Magnetic North Pole at 78°35.7′N, 104°11.9′W. The Magnetic North Pole is "currently" (as of 2005) located at 82.7°N 114.4°W.

Resolute, Canada to the geographic North Pole is over a thousand miles. To the magnetic pole (the coordinates they used) is around 300, in a different direction, so they came up about 800 miles short of the real North Pole.

That trip would have been three times further, but a bit more than three times as difficult, however, as there would be no way to carry that much fuel, food, and gin, would have had to cross about 50 times as much ice, and would have been that much colder still as they went further north. Then we could see a discussion about the toilet seat being stuck to Clarkson's skin. . . . Eeeewwww!

No, it runs adverts, unfortunately. Final Gear is making it sound as though they will cut the news for the US version (unfortunate, really), but any Top Gear is good Top Gear, IMO.

The problem is, I'm uncertain if every cable company or satellite company carries them. Either way, I'm looking forward to it. If we can get enough people in the US to watch it, we may get to keep it (crossing fingers!).

...I still say they should have put it on TLC though...

....looks at the TV guide...

Hey I get BBC America!

I get all the episodes through the internet so I really don't care whether they show them on cable or not, I'm just hoping my parents get a dish so we can get the real BBC here.

 Yes! I was watching BBC America a few days for no reason looking through the guide on TV hoping to see Top Gear but nothing was there. :P Now there will no to long in the future!

They should bring out a Top gear DVD box with all the seasons. I would love to watch those early seasons.
The only time i saw parts of those was in high school in English class.
We had to watch a part of a show and got questions about it afterwards as a test :)

We get Top Gear repeats here in the UK on the UKTV Sky channel. To accomodate the advert breaks they pretty much just cut out the news. Wouldn't be surprised if our UKTV show and the US show are exactly the same formats.

Glad to hear you guys in the States are getting TG regularly now, enjoy it! Only 2 months till the new series hits the UK hopefully, would be interested to know when you all will be getting it too.
