I bought this week's tickets with change that had been in my desk drawer for about a year. So really, my $2 spent on tickets won't matter, good bet or not. It was collecting dust. I'm sure most of us are fortunate enough to throw away a dollar once or twice a year.

Oh negative Nancie's go away.

Ok, you're not getting it.

Let's say you saw someone buying a soda from a soda machine charging $1.50 per can, and let's say that you knew that 10 paces away there was a soda machine charging $0.50 per can. If someone came up to you and said "you know, you're throwing away money", would you call them a "negative Nancy"? No! You'd say thank you for letting me know that I'm wasting money.

No, I get it. And I don't care.

So what if we are wasting money on a lottery ticket. That money would have probably gone to something worse like fast food or some other useless item that we don't really need. People throw away money at stupid crap their whole life, so we don't really need you to come in here and lecture us. 👎

It's my money and I'll do what I want with it.

There's a difference between junk food and real food.

What's with the negativity in here all of a sudden? If you don't plan on playing, leave those of us alone that are and spend your day somewhere else.

The idea is to make money with the lottery no? But you're not, and it's not statistically possible. What you're really buying with your lottery ticket is an imaginary world where you suddenly get rich. You buy a fantasy where you can spend your lottery winnings. It's an emotional escape from reality that you're spending that dollar on.

Focus on reality. Spend your money and time on something that will actually benefit you and you'll find yourself less interested in the fantasy and more interested in what's actually happening.

Guessing you have never been to a casino?

Sure it's more than likely not going to happen, but gambling isn't that big of an issue as long as you keep it in check. Besides, unless it's essential food or shelter everything is more or less a waste of money.

People have dreams and sometimes you have to spend money to make them come true.

Nothing you say will change how I feel about it. So have a nice day, sir.

Does the US lottery give any money to charity?

In the UK some of the money goes towards charities, this means the prize money isn't subject to tax. If/When I become a regular lottery player I'll probably use that as my only charity contribution.

Danoff is trying to make a point, but most adults are aware of what state(s) lotteries are. It is an entertainment, or an "escape" as Danoff called it. It's only a game to me. I often think how I used to waste coins on arcade games as a kid. Today, I don't really play games anymore, but lottery is a very similar habit.

I don't even play Mega Millions, but guys on gtplanet, or friends & coworkers(don't forget the media, too) talking about it, that makes it more fun. I bought another five.

Stop being a negative nancy, danoff. :P

I don't know exactly, but from what I understand, the lottery earning for the operator(the states) works like taxes. In Oregon where I live, they fund projects with the money gained from the lottery operation.

I heard on the news that this lottery is also open for Canadians. Suppose I go down and buy the winning ticket? I guess I'd be obligated to buy Premium at the very least!

I bet the reaction of Americans would be amusing if a Canadian won...

It's awesome if Canada wants to play in our lottery. It generates revenue for the state, so Canada subsidizing the US government is perfectly fine (aside from the fact that the government has a monopoly on gambling).

When is the next drawing? I almost never play but this might be one of those times where I buy $5-10 in tickets and make someone else a little richer.:sly: Sure is fun to dream about winning though.:)

Tonight, cutoff is at 9cst I think.

I like Colbert's numbers.

1,2,3,4,5,6

Which is odd as I have that same combination on my luggage.:odd:

The article I linked explains that you want to pick high numbers (over 31) to improve your return on the dollar because you're less likely to be splitting with someone who picked birthdays.

I think it's going to take more than a few opportunist Canadians to help your state in any appreciable manner! ;) But I personally would be more than happy to split my winnings with your state as it would still be a great deal more than I have now.

As for government monopolies on gambling, it's not really any different up here - right now Toronto is in the midst of trying to get a casino in the area so the city can increase its revenues...

No, the cutoff is 15 mins before the drawing. 10:45pm EST ,9:45pm CST , 8:45pm MST, 7:45pm PST
Good to see that I still have time to go out and get another ticket, I was looking over the one I bought earlier today, only to realize that the person running the lottery machine gave me $5 for the Cash 5 rather than the Mega Millions. I usually check, but the place was packed with people trying to get tickets that I must have forgot. Oh well, it won't matter that much if I win tonight though.

My buddy at KSU broke it down:

That doesn't even take into account multiple winners or anything. You have to get 6 tickets to make have a statistical advantage.

Aw man, I'd be so gutted to have half of half a billion. That'd suck eggs.
