VCRC vintage & low power :: Sunday 3pm GMT / 10am US EST

has anyone driven the Mazda RX500 '70?

You reminded me that I've been meaning to get and drive this car ever since I first saw it.

Now I have, and I can say, after a dozen laps, it's a ton of fun. Tricky and temperamental, to be sure (it is an MR, after all) but once you have a feel for what it's telling you, controllable and (mostly) predictable. For example, where the Autozam sometimes tries to bite your hand off with no warning, and the Stratos often wants the whole arm off (or your head o_O;), the RX500 is content with a finger here and there, and can be persuaded to just nibble and not bite.

The tail is a bit lighter than I would like transitioning from mid-corner to exit, and it will come around if you're too heavy with your inputs; delicate steering and a gentle right foot are needed. Once you've got a feel for it, though, it's very fun -- it reminds me of the LCC Rocket, in that slides are actually really easy to catch with a flick of countersteer. Braking could be better; it is very stable going into a corner and down to the apex, but doesn't slow down quite as quickly as one might like.

It's pretty damn quick, too. Once I got a feel for it at Suzuka (expect the first few laps to be nothing but spins, drifts and crashes d(^,^)b ) I took it to Deep Forest where I've been doing a lot of testing. After just three laps ,it was faster on Comfort Softs than most of the Luxury cars we've been running on SMs in makeshift shuffle, with more time to be found.

tl:dr Yes. It's fun; a bit tricky and fast. 👍👍

edit about the Stratos

I just feel like that's cheating though

I understand where you're coming from here, but while the Stratos no longer tries to kill you on every corner when you stagger the tyres front to rear, it still tries to maim you. It still takes effort to extract all the speed from it, and it will still happily spin if you're not careful. :D With CMs up front, it feels like most of the other MR cars, only rather twitchier; with CS all round, it feels (and I hesitate to say it) a bit broken.

No hesitation here. GT's strength is in how it gives us a great variety of cars and a great community of people to race with. But it is not the most accurate simulator, and struggles especially with many mr and rr cars. IMO when comparing GT to pc sims that are known for their realism and accuracy, mismatching the tires provides a much better representation of the cars actual physics. More importantly it makes them more enjoyable to drive.

I did always want to drive that car because it just looks cool and by the way you described it, it sounds like Mazda rx500 sounds like a blast but it also sounds too quick for vcrc.

Guys, I was wondering why you don't use any headset to communicate during the races. Wouldnt it be faster to speak instead of chatting? Maybe that's to avoid people talking all over the race?

Probably to avoid people talking all over the race.. and maybe because not everyone have headsets..

Not having headset when some have and talk all the time make you feel reeeally outside of the loop.. and yeah it's also the thing where you can't hear wth people are saying if you don't have a headset yourself. :P

I just drove the mazda rx500 '70 for about a hour and imo it handles very well for a 44 year old car , but for vcrc I guess Its a bit too fast :guilty:

ps : i nearly poo'd myself from laughing as I switched to the cockpit view ! Has someone else troubles to find the rear mirrow 👍

I'd love to race the Alpine A110 1600S at some point. It's one of my favourite cars to drive in the game right now, and it just so happens to fall under the "vintage" category while being fairly low powered (I can't check right now but I believe it produces ~130hp, hopefully that's not to much). It's very light, and with its RR drivetrain it corners quite nicely. I know RR's can sometimes be a handful to drive, but due to the low power of the car it won't try to kill you (I hope) :P

How about a 45 lap race at Eiger Nordwand with the Alpine?

The Alpine corners well enough that the hairpins at Eiger should be a breeze!:)

Plus anyone wanting a drink break during the race could take a trip down the pit-lane:D

CM front and CS rear may be the best (my favorite :) ) tire combo.
Was testing at Grand Valley with various cars: LCC Rocket, KTM x-bow, Toyota FT-1, Ferrari F-40, A.C. 427, RUF Yellowbird, Mercedes SL-55 AMG.

Found them all to be extremely drivable, no TCS or ABS. I had damage heavy and while hotlapping was able to get at least 5 laps per car in before putting a wheel off. Lap times ranged from the 2:13.xxx for the LCC and the KTM to 2:17.xxx->2:19.xxx for the others except the portly Merc which was 2:27.xxx.

I am no great shakes as a driver, but feel I could drive these cars with these tires in a race. The tires grip surprisingly well and when they do get loose it is in a slow and recoverable manner.

The Alpines are cool and a good idea. I just drove the Isuzu Bellett1600 GT-R '69 and it would be another one to keep in mind. A great driving car even in dirt and snow(especially snow):D

Someone should be writing these great ideas down that we don't have to decide what we are doing next week every week

Yeah, that mirror is hilarious. :D Makes left-handers a little tricky, eh? I really like how it almost blocks the passenger-side mirror, too.

Alpine 1600S '72 is a blast at Eiger Reverse, I must say. It's a beaut in the hairpins, doesn't require putting the helm hard over every time.

BMW 507 would be a fun car as well -- but not at Eiger, as it triggers the Mystery Boxes! :boggled:

Alpine is one of my fave cars in the game so far, it's on my short list to do a future series with. 👍

I also heart the'73 Skyline. Like, really heart it a lot. The '70 Skyline is just as fantastic, and way gangsta. They actually run together in stock form perfectly, pretty much same exact lap times at any give track. 💡 :sly:

Sorry guys I need to retire from the next race (sunday 16th), I realized I won't be able to participate. I look forward to the following one
