Weather [Rain]

Rain wasn't very good looking in GT5 in my opinion so I definitely hope it's better in GT6. What I'm really curious about is the real time weather option. Nice to drive around the circuits knowing that it's the exact the same weather/time of day in the real world. Adds a little bit more depth to the game, for instance you can check the weather update before you're starting the 24h of Le Mans to plan a strategy.

Yes the real time weather option is interesting. But let's take Nordschleife as an example. Would that mean we get snow in the real time weather option? Because if they make it rain when it snows IRL, that'd be pretty lame.

Rainy conditions were not at all well done in GT5. Yes the rain itself looked okay, quite good even, but as some have said above the road surface itself was almost completely unaffected visually! In terms of end visual result, even Special Stage Route 5 wet from GT looks better if the aim to make the road look wet.
It's obviously easier to do without the variable conditions. I partly wish they would have ditched that idea and just offered wet and dry variations for every track, then it could look fantastic, rather than this "is it actually wet? I'll look behind to see if there's spray, ah yes, it's wet" stuff.

Interesting.

Rain and snow on a single track would be incredibly cool.

Indeed it would. And it makes sense too, if they really are implementing real time weather. Since snow is some sort of precipitation it should be included to the real time weather cycle.

Good suggestion, setting the weather and time like it is outside will definitely help for the feeling of immersion 👍

Nice that we will be able to do that on a lot of circuits in GT6.

Implementing falling snow should be totally possible, but it's the build up on the track and the surroundings that looks like a problem to me.

Indeed. But that could be a quick fix. If it's snowing when you choose real time weather BEFORE you enter the race, snow should already be there when you enter the race. No need for build up.

GT5 already had snow on "rain-only" weather-enabled tracks - it's unknown whether that was intentional or a glitch, but it works.

Obviously, it didn't accumulate. Once you introduce a second phase for the water to be in, you increase the memory requirements for "simulating" it being built up and eroded / melted / dried etc. Unless you fake it, like the puddles were in GT3.

I think the rain in gt5 was good enough aside from the jaggies which is fixed now (judging by smoke). Puddles and rain droplets on the cars make more sense in a next gen game. Now it would be basically wasted resources imo.

And what about wind guys? Reaally heavy rain... nurburgring... night.. lightings.. 250km/h with broken windshield.. side wind... and you feel in force feedback like wind pushing your Porsche from the track away... and suddenly large puddle of water on the track, you hit that with your left wheel, you get into the slip, flips on back, breaks barriers, trees... and... you wake up :D Too much sci-fi I know... :D

I've been thinking about lightning recently, the rendering is pretty easy using things like L-Systems and what have you. You can even use that to drive a sound, each "leg" of the bolt gets its own "boom" filtered according to where it is. :dopey:

In fact, I've just this second come across this tutorial.
Maybe that's too simple for PD, and it is totally cheating, so perhaps they'd do some ion diffusion modeling thing with "feelers" and proper ground strikes with current tracking to illuminate the bolts accordingly and such and patch after release.

While on the surface the PGR4 weather effects look pretty, they are totally contrived. Everything is simply a scripted graphical effect. GT5's weather effects were far more advanced, and I'd hate for them to produce anything less. I'm hoping that they will be improved for GT6 with the use of adaptive tessellation!

I always loved PGR's rain effects too. A question about GT5's snow...

Online I could usually get it to snow on SS7 or Eiger Nordwand, but never once have got it to snow on the Nürburgring :( I recall seeing a youtube video of a young guy, who had been able to get it to snow on there ( online only i think ).

Is there a specific thing one can do, to make it happen ?

I agree. The main thing for me was the rain drops on the windscreen, just didn't look right at all. Hopefully they have a done a little bit of work on that front

Rain on the window looked good... now snow looked like pixilated junk..

You can do raindrops with something as simple as 2 or 3 layered bumpmaps with resolutions of merely 128x128.

Stop using graphics memory as excuse to not put a feature. Processing power is one thing but memory issue for 2 or 3 tiny greyscale textures... nope.

The real problem with raindrops on the body is animating them to look reasonable, the issue will be processing power in generating coordinates to move the image over the body panels (in the right direction!).

With some careful hand made UV mapping you may be able to achieve this with standard UV coord animating.

Rain on a windscreen is quite simple as a windscreen is mostly flat you can just animate the UV coordinates in a single direction (ie up or down the windscreen depending on the speed)

Wouldnt the tessellation thing come into play? I also think more shine on the road surface should be evident. Picture Daytona 24H:

Daytime with dark cloud cover and brake lights refelcted in the water ahead of you
.Dark clouds but, no rain. The spray should still hit the windscreen.
Night time no rain. Reflections from track lights and brake lights.
Night time with rain would be the same as GT5.
Night time clear sky and wet but drying surface. Edges of track should be reflective.

We'll see if PD had time to incorporate these.

The F1 series has managed to do quite good rain effects right from F1 2010, and not just on the cars. The way the track progressively dried was great, and the way the surface changed in terms of grip levels was great too. I'm confident that PD has some staff that are clever enough to come up with a similar system.

I'd prefer the track and grip effects of water over the way it travels across the surface of the car really.

Is the PS3 too weak to include thunderstorms?
The effect of thunderstorms on performance would be minimal. It is simply some sounds played, a change and extreme boost to environment light for about 2 frames (to provide the light flash) and a lighting texture over-layed the sky.

It does not take much to create a convincing lighting strike, most of the effect is sound and the screen flashing for a few frames.

If you can do rain and tire smoke you should be able to do thunderstorms.

Problem is, would PD be bothered.

Lightning would be cool, and not difficult to implement I guess.

GT5 already has fireworks. :) ... too many fireworks... lol

They sky boxed the real sky. :P

Sometime ago, playing GT5 online at Nurburgring, I was almost sure that it started to snow, so I was looking for something similar on youtube and found this.

[OT]Project Gotham Racing... I miss you... :(:(:([/OT]

Would be fabulous to have rain textures, in GT5 (with the rain) the car seems detached from the rest.
