Weather [Rain]

"U.S. Gran Turismo producer Taku Imasaki also confirmed to GTPlanet yesterday that you’ll be able to play the game with real-time weather, which re-create meteorological conditions at the actual track in the real world."

There we go! My memory and dignity is still in order. Thanks for providing this. Just what it needed to confirm what I thought I thought was right. Cheers!

Anyone noticed this

Weather: Variable

Snow maybe?

I really hope that means we have One track with all the time/weather change and not multiple versions. That was quite unnecessary to have multiple variations of the same track just for the sake of one having weather and one not having it.

Question remains; how much of the 'meteorological conditions' we will see :D

Exactly. I don't think the tracks will change with seasons, and if you take a track like Nürburgring it would be odd to have snow and freezing temperatures when the entire scenery looks like summer. I'm guessing that it will only monitor the amount of clouds on the sky and the precipitation (which will be recreated as rain, so no snow/hail/drizzle).

Yes, but I mean that some track may have only rain or only snow

I hope they release a video so we can see if they actually improved the look of the rain and the reflections in the water on the track!

Note that it says "Track Surface Water 0%"

Does that maybe indicate puddles?!?

I watched the season premiere of GT Academy the other night and at the beginning of the episode, they showed the contestants playing an early build of GT6 - and it briefly showed rain [or at least a wet track] and it looked better than GT5 from what I could tell!

As well as, get ready for this...The Deltawing

I am going ahead and be "That guy" but I do find the whole weather and Star alignment to be exact to the real world counterparts a bit of an unnecessary gimmick.

The real-time weather is a great way to get realistically varying weather, especially for long races. It's coming directly from the actual weather in the actual location. If anything, it's a cheat, since they don't have to get the simulation quite so accurate.

The changeable weather wasn't a gimmick in GT5, because of how it affected races (esp. online), but it was lacking in fineness of the range of situations it could "land" on through the simulation. This is apparently difficult for PD to fix, so this real-weather "cheat" is a potential improvement.

As for the "star aligment", I think the reason they're modeling latitude and longitude effects is more to make sure the sun comes up at the right time and in the right place for 24hr races etc. which is a nice touch of authenticity that's easy to do. Plus the "quality" and colour of light is very different as a result of these changes in planetary / celestial geometry, which is not so easy.

Actually, the whole lighting of a scene during daytime is dependent on these little changes, and will make the real circuits more like their real-world counterparts, although it's also dependent on the seasons.

As always Griffith you provide a strong argument, while I still feel that Modeling latitude and longitude effects are/should be down the pecking order for features, if they will affect the game in that positive manner I can't say anything but welcome it.

Interesting insight about the "cheat" theory, never thought of it like that before.

I don't know that I'm absolutely right, but the positive comments about how real Willow Springs looks (obviously helped by the simple scenery) are partly due to the new lighting engine tweaks (HDR) and partly due to getting the sun in the right place, have the right size and giving both it and the sky the right colour. Since the cars appear to be partially lit by their environment maps, getting the sky colour right really helps to tie everything together. A great demonstration here.

I wanted to be certain I wasn't making this up, and sure enough it's a big thing in photography - see here. Even altitude plays a part (different "thickness" of atmosphere).
