Wed Lotus 38 Round 0.jpg

Please select your car as shown above. Drivers have been placed in two man teams with the fastest drivers in the Works Teams.

Qualifying will be just 10 minutes long. There will be 2 pit stops during the race - the first at 10 minutes, the second at 20 minutes. Pit windows: 9-11 and 19-21 minutes.

Rolling Start with GO on green!

Post 1 on page 1 has been updated and includes a highlights film of the 1965 race - well worth watching!

Edited / Corrected as per comments from @IfAndOr

Perhaps rolling starts on the ovals @Sick Cylinder with go on green? It would save any confusion and prevent start line sliding from the banking. (That's Monday and Wednesday)

Just to clarify - has it got to be at those times or around those times. I'm just thinking of congested pit lanes, which indeed could be interesting in itself.
(Note. The schedule still says 1 pitstop which might confuse those who didn't read your additional text)

As anyone tried out the Lotus 38 yet? I've just had a go against the AI and I'd say it's going to be an interesting race. Touch wheels and up you go! Oh and the engine damage is going to take some management, the Lotus engines are very delicate.

While I quite like oval racing I find the Logitech wheels don't. It always makes their gearing rattle, especially the banking. I'd love to try a (working ;)) T300 sometime to see/feel the difference of a belt drive.

Yeah, mine was rattling quite a bit at first. I usually turn the ffb volume down on oval circuits and find it helps a lot. In the Camaro I had it at 35 on Monday whereas it's normally around 50 on normal circuits.

Yes tried it was quite surprised, how bad got Paul.

Think I will try Rj turning FFB, down, can feel bumps a little more in the Lotus.

To stop most of the clipping (red bar) I've currently got my volume set at 20. It still clips (and rattles) a bit at that so it might be down to 15 for the race. I usually have mine at 30 to 35 for most cars/tracks.

I might try lowering the gain for the ovals to see if that helps.

Well I watched the replay and I'm still not sure who finished where.

The clock was at zero and me and RJ were side by side heading towards the line. There was a slight coming together which resulted in RJ launching up a little and me sliding sidewards across the line. I think this confused the game because the race didn't finish! I ground to a halt with suspension damage RJ continued at the front but was then strangely dropped back to 5th after Sick very slightly punted him up the rear. Then LC was in the lead then he wasn't because his car stopped, Tav went past, then slowed, and BB wizzed past them both. Very odd indeed.

Great tactical battle with RJ over the last 2/3rds of the race though. 👍

If it helps you out with your scoring @Sick Cylinder here's a shot of the finish line as I went over it (unconventionally) showing everyone's position at that point.

That's an awesome photo! For what it's worth that screen tallies with what I thought the finishing order was. 0.007 is mighty close again, I'm glad that you still won despite me squeezing you accidentally.

I really enjoyed the tactical aspect of it tbh, from teaming up with LC (my teammate) in qualifying for a bit of slipstream benefit to devising a race plan.

Originally we were both going to go with my strategy of nursing the car until the final stop, but LC got a Drive-Through penalty at the start for speeding (I saw no evidence of that personally) so he had to change tactics and go for an all out banzai with very little mechanical sympathy. I think the car only just made it across the line, he did well to get 3rd after that penalty.

Yeah in many ways it's more interesting than keeping your foot on the throttle and turning left.

My plans changed during the race. I was managing to control the engine wear so (within the pit windows) I went for long, short and long stints changing my pit repair options as I went along. It was nail biting during the 2nd stop when we went in together. I was shouting at my pit crew to hurry up. :P
A full complement of 16 drivers would have probably affected the tactics. In a good way.

from teaming up with LC
I was going to try and "team up" with Tav, but I hardly saw him. He was having too much enjoyment in managing his engine wear. :)

I don't think I've ever driven around the Texas track! I must get some practice.

Yeah, I was sure you were going to come out ahead of me as I hadn't repaired damage on the first stop. Little did I know you had done exactly the same as me.

I was sorely tempted to not repair on the second stop as well because I was only getting 15 damage every 10 minutes. I could have nursed the car to the end with about 45-50 damage. I decided against it though, partly because I didn't know how long your stop would be and partly because I felt like it was cheating a bit compared to the guys running default pit stops. At least my total time stopped would equal theirs as I repaired the same amount of damage.

I think the engine damage rate increases as your overall damage % rises. It'll go up quicker when you get to the yellow and red stages. So I to erred on the side of caution since I wanted to finish.

Longer time spent in the pits vs a slower and deteriorating car towards the end of the race. Swings and roundabouts. And tactics. ;)

Wed Lotus 38 Round 1 Daytona.jpg

NB - for results I used the @IfAndOr table.

Next race I will try sticking to a rev limit. This race I just went flat out and as a result spent a very long time in the pits - about 7 minutes I think. I also spent a lot of time failing to pit - twice I found myself on the wrong side of the pit wall and once the car got stuck and damaged in the pit so had to limp round for a 4th time to get that stop finally done! Hopefully better race next week.

Texas should be the best round for everyone - the track is smaller and much more challenging than the two big ovals in the game. Its small size means that it looks and feels crowded with fewer cars. The game could really do with another small / medium size oval. I've watched a lot of footage of Darlington and Milwaukee - they would be good choices.

This race I just went flat out
No, that didn't work at Daytona with the 38. However at Texas it might well be different since it's more compact you might not be able to reach full revs for long. Indianapolis, where the banking is less severe, probably can't be taken at full throttle for the whole lap so will require a different approach.
Because of its engine wear I originally thought the 38 wasn't best suited for our races, but the strategy involved in controlling it is appealing. 👍

You should have has us race around the Knockhill tri oval. Now that would have been crowded. :)

Hello,

I am finally back from my small Eurotrip.

The weather was awful most of the trip and especially when I was at the Nürburgring.

We were having wintry conditions and the occasional snowstorm. Temperatures were below zero or just above for most of the day. As it was part of a wider trip, I took a car that is not really track focused, so to not to risk the car or the rest of the trip I only did three laps.

Two of those three were just to test how the track was. On the only one lap where I slightly went for it, I spun at Adenauer Forst after it started snowing.

The following video is just an extract of the whole lap. In his section and after the first flocks fell, the track was greasy so I was slowing down and approaching with loads of precaution. It didn’t work and ended up looking the wrong way, with no consequences.
