Received 3 parcels today. Just waiting on 1 more then I can assemble this monster :mischievous:

PS - "What's in the box?" shall remain classified until completion/assembled :sly:đź‘Ť.
May post some pics once it's done.

Curious.......

Just wrestled with my CPU trying to get it out of the socket after being in there for years. The arm wouldn't open to 90 degrees but after some encouragement :sly:

I don't know if or how its possible reseating will help solve hard freezes but I guess its worth a try.

Somewhat computer related, I did this today (well, tonight):

DIY networked sound system

Asustor NAS with a 3TB WD Red drive inside, connected to a set of Logitech Z506 5.1ch speakers (sort of). Need to work out how to use the NAS properly first, the speakers are awesome though - have my iPod connected to them directly at the moment and with the bass dial cranked all the way up to 11 it thumps the floor at half volume!

Expect more pics/detail in my PC thread later...

I decided the stock icons in Explorer were too boring so I changed them. I found a set I liked online and changed them to suit my tastes. I think they came out alright, but I think the Memory Stick one is too dark. Opinions?

So there's a PowerMac G5 in the next town from me that is up for sale as spares or repair for ÂŁ40. Do I? Don't I? At the very least I might be able to make a PC case out of it...

How much effort did it take? I've seen a few where people dremel the absolute crap out of them to fit a standard motherboard port plate, but I'd rather butcher the original motherboard to get the connectors off of that than ruin the case... Do you have photos of the inside?

I wouldn't Dremel the back, every one that's been done like that looks absolutely terrible. Like you said take the motherboard, cut the ports 'strip' off the mac mobo and rewire it to headers on the PC mobo. If you need more ports they can be wired to the PCI slots.

I haven't got any pics to hand but basically I cut an aluminium plate and drilled the ATX hole layout and the Apple BTX hole layout then bolted it to the case stand off's so it acts like a converter.

Just be prepared for quite a bit of work with this case conversion. Sure you can just dump everything in and shut the door but if you want it neat and done properly it will take time. It also depends on how crazy creative you want to get with it.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'd expected, thanks. Problem is, I forgot to actually buy the thing, but I messaged the seller and he got back to say it's mine if I want it, which I probably do (if the case is in alright condition). ÂŁ40's pretty good for that case!

Have a look here. A lot of people have modified G5 cases to use with ATX boards. I say get the G5 if its in good nick. If you do, you'll have to finish your Raspberry Pi MacBook and you'll have a matching pair.

Yeah I know, right? I've had it on my desk for months but I've hit a wall in that I can't probe the trackpad without an oscilloscope and I can't make an LVDS adaptor cable without tiny, tiny hands... I'm considering laser cutting a case out of acrylic instead but that's not as cool.

I just got the PowerMac though, it's just reinforcing my belief that Apple stuff honestly isn't overpriced. Well, wasn't when this was new, anyway. I popped the lid off and was confronted by liquid corrosion (not a lot, mind) and a radiator; this thing had liquid cooling and I never knew that was a thing. I'm dying to get the cover off the panel but it's not obvious as to how that works right now. This design, though, it's amazing.

Is a sudden scrambled screen with hard lock up (keyboard lights won't respond) ALWAYS the graphics card? I just got this on one of my machines...

It was a machine could cost up to $10,000 so the case is really nice thick aluminium held together with lots of fancy bolts. The liquid cooling was done by Delphi who make car radiators!

 Just a few, yeah. My Steam profile says 165 games and 314 DLC owned; that 900GB is my entire Steam folder which includes uncompressed PNG screenshots and a few duplicated game directories for backup purposes before I bought the NAS box; namely a 14GB tarball of GTAIV and a 11GB copy of Skyrim. That doesn't include Max Payne 3 though - which randomly deleted itself, I kid you not - and Modern Warfare 3, which I removed because lolCoD

Got my powerline adapter to cooperate with the others.

Still tweaking it though. iControl don't fail me now!

Currently debating if I should get a new power cord. Yesterday, it would recharge the battery (which is newer then it is) and then say "95% Plugged in, not charging" Today it said "100%". Just wondering.

Also, an interesting question to the OP:

Would anything regarding what you have done to your smartphone or Tablet still count in this thread?

So I got my 100mm Torx bits in the post today to go along with my new Stanley ratchet screwdriver (which arrived last week and I've been dying to use it on something), so after having my fill of GTA V today I turned to finishing off the gutting of the G5 I bought. I'd already removed the easy bits; disc drive, RAM, various screws, fans, PCI card support, but I needed the screwdriver to get the CPU cooler off in order to get the motherboard off, as it was bolted directly to the chassis.

Pictures!

^ Is it weird that I find this extremely pretty?

^ The result of a leaking CPU cooler, this crystallisation can be seen on various parts of the apparatus. I can see why it was sold as spares or repair...

^ The almost empty case. You can see stains and coolant crystals on the inside and bottom of the case, most of that is gone now but I need cotton buds and some alcohol to do it properly.

So now I'm looking for a template for ATX motherboards which includes height measurements and PCI slot positions. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to work something out with regards to the PCI slots and connectors, there's not a whole lot of room above the PCI slots so I don't know how a graphics card is going to sit in there... It would be nice if I had components to go in the case now, but, well, I don't and I won't have for a while. Still, it's a nice case, I'd use it for my PC if a) I didn't also have a Mac Pro and b) it had enough PCI slots, just four won't do.

Might be a power supply issue too. But the best of luck to you.

I tried my current PSU in an older computer and it ran fine under reasonable load for like 24 hours.

Unfortunately the only other PSU I have lying around is too old to try (low Watts & no P4 cable).

Would you say that means I can rule the PSU out as being the issue?

I've got a few ATX motherboard trays lying around ( I think one of them has 7 slots) that you could have if you cover the shipping charges. đź‘Ť
