I don't think I'll increase the RAM because DDR1 prices today are insane. In more concerned about the processor keeping up.

Windows 7 run's fine with aero on 1GB of RAM, I have run with that on my other newer Athlon 64 3200+ PC for 4 years along with Photoshop and CAD programs.
Ah okay, I stand corrected then.

Never tried it myself, the least I've ever used with Win7 is 4GB. Just going by what I'd read when Win7 first came out.

Yeah it's surprising that it's very smooth, as smooth as if it was running XP but obviously not lighting quick, and this was with the 64bit version which uses more RAM. I recon the 32bit would perform even better. That's on a 2005 PC, a 2001 PC might be a different story!

I'm working on importing some of my music into Google Music Player. That Music Manager thing they require you to use is S-L-O-W.

It's funny in a way, I'm uploading stuff so I can (more easily, maybe) listen to music on an android device or chromebook. But the only way to upload music is with their Music Manager, which runs only on Windows. Furthermore the Windoze box needs to have Chrome installed.

Yesterday I picked up 2 more components for my PC; the motherboard and the RAM. I know I should have left it in the box and assembled it all together with the CPU but I wanted to see what it looked like in the case through the window lol. Hooked up the cables that I could, just gotta buy the CPU and cooler, the hard drives and the graphics card now.

I think the green of the motherboard (it also has green track lighting as part of its audio segregation) and the green of the power supply goes well with the orange. The CPU cooler I'm getting is a Corsair H80i, which has an illuminated corsair logo on the cooling block, which you can change the colour of. I'll make mine green to suit the motherboard lighting :)

Now get an nVidia card to keep with the green and then paint the case green to finish it if you want a green case.

According to GPU Boss, it'll beat the likes of the GTX 580, GTX 660, and is pretty much tied with the GTX 670, and eBay doesn't have anything like that for less than a couple hundred, second hand.

My vote: Go for it.

My grandmother's computer is pretty slow to boot up. Somewhere in the 5-10 minute range for it to get to the desktop, and another 5 just to have everything running at normal speeds. It is roughly 6 or 7 years old, and it was used by my cousin who did gaming and generally just installed anything and everything. That became pretty slow as it was, and aging hasn't done it any better.

I was just wondering if any of you guys know if it could possibly help if I got a new HDD or SSD for it? It's an HP p6340sc desktop, but I don't know anything about the mobo or if it supports multiple drives. Is there any way I could check? (I'm guessing some plug holes for wires possibly?)

Technically i did this yesterday. Bought a new Webcam and got FacetrackNoir working in Assetto Corsa. Now if only i could figure out some of my other racing games with it.

Sounds like what that machine needs most is some serious de-crapification and probably a session of CCleaner, malwarebytes, etc. Go through it with your grandmother and remove anything she doesn't need/use. A new HDD won't help that much. As for an SSD, I'd say if any money were to be invested in the machine at all, might just be better to replace it. A ten-minute bootup time means there's way too much junk on it.

True... our 10 year old HP Pavillion w5075 boots nearly as fast as my 1-year old laptop... and the Pavillion runs on Vista.

I have talked with my grandmother, and she says we could try to clean it up in one of the upcoming days. I just know it will die within very few years, so I have found a PC for her as well, just in case. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005ET4MHO/?tag=gtplanetuk-20 For some of the things, it looks a little overpowered (She only does card games online and banking) but it's very cheap. People complain about it being in German, but I think with the little knowledge of German that I have, I should be able to change it into Danish.

Unless you guys have any ideas for a custom build, this what I'll do. I've never done such a thing as building a computer, but I have been inside one and seen the bits and bobs.

I recommend one of those new Google Chromebooks. They're relatively cheap and easy to use.
Actually, if an eleven inch or fourteen inch screen is okay, a Chromebook is an excellent suggestion. See if you can arrange for her to try one out hands-on first, though.

Frankensteined mine and my wife's old comps into one. Win Vista OEM version got fussy due to hardware changes and wouldn't validate. Then a mate pointed me in the direction of Linux Mint - absolutely loving it (never used Linux before). No agro with driver finding, wireless adapter detected straight away, and I've just got hold of MonoDevelop to learn to code some C# in.

All legit freeware, saved me ~£180 on having to get a Win 8 license which would probably have been stretching my middle aged hardware anyway.

I am a very happy bunny!

I reapplied thermal paste to my CPU but when I turned on my PC on again my 550 ti would not work. It seems to not draw power at all even with the 6 pin power cable in. I think it has died and I'm sad now. My motherboard has no vga, dvi, or HDMI port on it so I can't use my PC. I need a new replacement fast but I only have $50.

My dad was kind enough to give me some money to get a knew graphics card. I will probably get the AMD r9 280x. I will be gaming in 1080p so I really don't need anything more than that.

So I keep getting very brief, unpredictable and intermittent connection drop-outs, but I have no idea how to tell which part of the network is failing. It's either the connection into the house, the router or the powerline ethernet adaptors - or perhaps, coincidentally, my laptop has also been losing its connection too but it's so quick that I haven't noticed or haven't been using the internet at the time.

Any ideas on how I could test this? I've already tried browsing my router's log but there's nothing useful in there.

Copied from my thread :)

I went and picked up the CPU and cooler tonight :)

Pretty happy, I know the cabling isn't tidy, I'll tie it up once the hard drive and graphics card are in. And the colour of the cooling pump lights are going to be changed to green to match the motherboard track lighting. Looks rad :)

While I didn't modify anything or do any sort of work, I've been planning on getting a new computer. It isn't some mind-blowing PC I am considering getting, but it will certainly keep me current. So all I've been doing is basically save up my money to hopefully find a good deal for the PC I want to get on Amazon. Or maybe eBay.

The PC I want to get is the Acer AXC-603G-UW30. Now before anyone tells me this small form factor PC is a bad computer or something, I wanted to get a newer PC that is of good value and fairly decent. I don't have the money or resources to get any kind of bonkers PC. Nor am I adept in building my own PC. This is the best I can do without seeking a refurbished PC or anything. I am not much a modern gamer anyways. So I am not expecting to test this PC's limits with the most demanding of-the-moment games. I am willing to learn Windows 8 as well as use it with my current PC's 1024x768 resolution monitor (that is the max resolution of this monitor, and the computer I want to get does not include a monitor). In the future, I want to maybe get a better monitor to take advantage of Windows 8 and its widescreen usage. I have a little knowledge and experience with Windows 8. I'll probably get loads more experience with extended usage of the interface.

I hope to have a new PC some time next week or maybe the week after if it takes a bit longer to get my PC. It will be my opportunity to say I have a modern PC aside from my reliable HP computer that has served me well since Christmas 2005.

@JohnBM01 Have you considered a laptop? You can get a fairly good laptop for your budget... and it'll come with a widescreen monitor :sly:. If you don't play any games it will be more than good enough.

I was putting all data on to my new Proraid until life kicked me in the balls.
One of the drives that had 2TB of data which was moving data over just had a partition failure.

No, ildd. Since I'm mostly home often, I prefer doing my work on a desktop PC. I still want to do gaming even though my PC gaming habits have waned in recent times apart from my blogging and other work. I am just going with things at a controlled pace before possibly going bonkers on some other stuff.
