Wow they totally took that from this:

The image is not the only thing they took off a hit piece of work  | N.B. - There might be a couple of mild spoilers in the form of 3-5 second scene shots in the video below (I haven't seen all the trailers for this movie so can't tell you for sure. Great movie though).

I watched the men who stare at goats. I heard about this movie years ago and it seemed weird so I never watched it. I saw a list on the internet and it was on the must watch movies before you die which seemed strange to me so I decided to give it a shot. It's basically about the military using mind control techniques to train soldiers into accomplishing things that seem impossible. Like walk through walls or like the title stare at goats, than make their hearts stop. The cast was pretty good with some big names and it had a lot of funny parts. I have seen documentaries before on the militaries strong push into the psychological war techniques before and a lot of what this movie said has actually been tried and documented before. There's a part where the guys are staring at a wall of lockers and the teacher list out one of them and they have to tell what's inside. The real military used to do experiments where they would get a person to sit in one room and have them guess what's in a box in the next room. They said after some training into trying to free your mind the success rate was quite high. Considering it could be literally anything in the room next door even one right answer to me would of been impressive. They didn't talk about real military stuff this is me telling you. The movie wasn't trying to be a documentary it was merely a fun take on it and it was quite enjoyable. The beginning is great and so is the middle but i find it starts to get weird near the end. A bit Hollywood rather than story telling. That's where it goes down hill a bit. Overall I would say check it out. Only 1 hour and 30 minutes so it's great when you don't have tons of time and wanna watch something.

I was starting to fear that I was the only one who thought it looked a little to familiar, especially Wall-E meets Matrix.

Chopper (Andrew Dominik, 2000) -- Chopper tells the intense story of Mark 'Chopper' Read, a legendary criminal who wrote his autobiography while serving a jail sentence in prison. His book, "From the Inside", upon which the film is based, was a best-seller. Eric Bana nails his performance as the guy you just hope gets killed 10 minutes into the movie, yet despite his character being somewhat smart (enough to wrote a few books), he's at no time a her nor an anti-hero. The movie is greatly written, with some ample doses of irony and very well directed, full of techniques that serve to make the story much more stressful and it is indeed an engaging story. Not the easiest movie to watch, especially in its approach that blends mindless violence with art and a bit of homicidal maniac, but very much worth viewing. Consider subtitles, since it's in very thick Australian... it took me a while figure out they were saying 'Chopper' when it sounded like 'shapee'. 7.5/10

MrWhiskers forgot to include the detail that pushes The Outsiders up from a 9 to a 10... it has Tom Waits in it!

And The Men Who Stare At Goats is one of my personal favorites, good for 4-6 watches for me. While it is "about" paranormal military programs, it's more about belief and hope I'd say. Probably the most cheesy/awesome moments in this move is when Ewan McGregor is talking about becoming a Jedi (talk about breaking the 4th wall!) This is definitely a feel-good comedy.

I saw Iron Man 3 today, and I stumped up the extra €1.50 for 3D, so sorry for being a sucker for it. :guilty:

Speaking of 3D, the CGI effects are well-integrated into the movie, but the 3D doesn't really pop out at you - maybe it's because, after seeing a few 3D movies, I've become immune to it or something.

The plot seemed a bit basic, but then again this is a superhero blockbuster. This movie's real appeal is in the cast's tremendous acting abilities and the well-written dialogue (especially Stark's wittiness).

My score: 8.5/10

Z (Costa-Gavras, 1969) -- Following the murder of a prominent leftist, an investigator tries to uncover the truth while government officials attempt to cover up their roles. Ths movie isn't merely inspired by true events, but it's more of a chronology of reality, which is the assassination of a Grigoris Lambrakis, who led the leftist party, and the subsequent cover up by the rightist parties, but the real impact of the movie is that it was released during the time the right was still in power, in Greece, leading to the movie being banned in that country. In terms of the plot, if you're not Greek, it's quite possible you might be left with many unanswered questions, but, in general, it is an accurate description of Greece during that era.

Even today, 40-something years after its release, the movie holds many events as still current, and the excellent editing, which doesn't dwell on loooong scenes and inoquous moments, plus the direction make for the movie to be a real glued-to-the-seat type. Yves Montand and Jean-Louis Trintignant were perfect in their roles, but the whole movie still seems Oscar-worthy by today's standards. It won Best Foreign Movie and Best Editing in 1970. 10/10

Dead Ringers (David Cronenberg, 1988) -- Twin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman. I'd be willing to bet this is one of the top 3 performances of Jeremy Irons (or is that 2?), where he portrays two separate roles of two brothers that share women, until one falls in love and refuse to share. Yet, the movie is a much more profound exploration of the relationship between the two brothers, but the movie was released into the mainstream and badly misinterpreted, I think. Yet, as obscure and unknown as its genre may be, the movie does manage to get boring and repetitive as hell and it really just annoyed me after a while, but only because the scenes got too predictable, because it had happened that way 20 minutes before! It would seem Cronenberg finished the movie with a runtime of only 45 minutes and was forced to put in filler material for the rest of the 75 minutes and just made alternate scenes. That's what killed the movie for me, yet the summarized version of it (if it ever were available) would be better. Also, it's painfully 80s. 6/10

Seen Iron Man 3D hate the 3D not worth the money and couldn't figure out what's happening during tthe fighting scenes,as for the movie it's great easily my favorite Marvel standalone superhero movies, more thoughts later but I'm impressed.

Do yourself a favour and hire a movie called "Moon" with Sam Rockwell in it. That is all I will say ;).

My cousin told me about this movie when we left after watching Oblivion.

We liked Oblivion. Even though the story was kind of, well, horrid, we immensely enjoyed the special effects and the music in the movie. Sometimes I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the music, it was fantastic!

Two films that i watched last night..

The Campaign-So this is a comedy about the race to be congressman for North Carolina between Cam Brady (Will Ferrel) and Marty Huggins (Zach icantspellhissurnameakis) and thats about it basically, it just charts the race and how low each one would stoop to win the seat in government...it is quite a funny film with some lol moments including Cam accidently punching a baby and Uggie the dog from the Artist...also stars John Lithgow and Dan ankroyd..so like i said it is quite funny but i wouldnt say its Ferrel best film...7

Jack Reacher-I was more interested in this one as ive read the book...the books are about an ex-decorated military serviceman and cop who after doing his duty becomes a drifter and goes from place to place solving crime caes that involve other former military serviceman...Tom Cruise stars as Jack Reacher, who in this one helps get justice for a guy who was framed for shooting dead five people...also stars David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins and Roberd Duvall...this is a good action drama, Cruise is good as Reacher (but not great) there were some things that werent in the film that were in the book and theres a really good car chase scene that wasnt in the book (Reacher drives a red chevelle SS!)...i quite enjoyed this...7

The Matrix - Ah, how the world used to love you and everyone thought you were awesome. As it turns out, we were all idiots. There are a lot of movies that hold up to the test of time where you can go back, watch it, and they're still good. Matrix...isn't one of them. No, today, it's just a multitude of bad acting, bad kung fu, and a really stupid story. Now, if you've been around a while, you know Kianu Reeves is a pretty terrible actor simply because...he has no emotions and the most monotone voice ever. So, picking him for a superhero role isn't a good idea. The kung fu was...meh. Granted Kianu was going through surgery at the time, but...it's kinda obvious that he can't move his neck through half the movie.

And the story, isn't that great to be honest. Really, I think they stole way too much from Ghost in the Shell while trying to create something "original" which just didn't work. Really, they'd been better off just making a Ghost in the Shell movie. Then again, I somehow doubt the Warsoski brothers have the brains to comprehend what Ghost in the Shell is really about.

It's really bad when the guy you hired to be the bad guy...is the best actor in the whole movie. Seriously, Hugo Weaving does a brilliant job as Agent Smith. I still LOVE the scene where he's talking privately with Morpheus.

In fact, there are only three characters in the movie that showed any emotion whatsoever: Agent Smith (which is odd, but whatever), Mouse and Cipher. In a world that's gone to hell, with humans being grown (Which also has it's loop holes. In fact, that just raises more questions and seems like an idea that wasn't really well thought out very well) everyone seems kinda...blase about everything.

So, in 2013, I'm giving The Matrix a 2/5.

Bronson - this movie is about the UKs craziest prisoner. It's based on a true story with a interesting take on it. Basically the story is a troubled kid gets 7yrs in prison for robbing a post office and ends up in jail for 34yrs. 30 of which was spent in solitude. I'm pretty sure the numbers are right but I may be wrong. Definitely in the 30s tho. The guy seems straight nuts. He fights everything. The movie is the guy telling his story and clips of what he's saying going back and forth between. It was a pretty good movie and seemed like it just couldn't be true.

It's really bad when the guy you hired to be the bad guy...is the best actor in the whole movie.

After reading this, I wonder if you understand or often pay attention to movies. Villains are often the make or break point of a film.

Just seen Snitch (The Rock,Dude from the walking dead, dudette from CSI,Evil drug cartel dude) Not a terrible movie, slow paced at the start then picks up slightly till the end, based on a true story .

Acting was good by all ,role suited the rock and he didn't do too badly but the walking dead guy stole the show for me,over all not a bad movie 6.5/10

also seen Night at the museum 2 ,I really hate that one seems they wanted to milk the success of a fairly enjoyable first movie by making a stupid second only chuckled about 2 times during the whole movie . 2/10 (terrible)

Yes. I understand that. But, Agent Smith didn't really make or break the Matrix. He was just the best acted character. And despite Hugo Weaving's superior acting ability, it was still a terrible movie. Like I said, it tries to be two different things and just falls short. So much was taken from Ghost in the Shell that it detracts from the rest of the "story." Which, there's not much of a story to begin with.

My point really is: the acting is awful, there's very little emotion. Even with Trinity it professing her love for Neo (by the way, in a sci-fi action movie, that's REALLY corny and stupid.) she doesn't seem to be that expressive about it. The story has some major loopholes and is really kinda boring, really. None of the character seem to really care about it, so, in the end, I feel like the story isn't really important either. Which isn't good considering they work so hard on the story between the kung fu scenes. And there's really one or two good kung fu scenes. (The Lobby scene is stupid. It feels like Trinity and Neo are fighting in two completely different lobbies because they don't really ever interact with each other through the whole scene. And then there's the random jump from the elevator to them in the middle of fighting guards on the roof. I kinda would like to see the rest of that scene.)

Yes. I understand that. But, Agent Smith didn't really make or break the Matrix.
So, you are saying that the movie would be no worse with a lesser actor?

I get it, you don't like the film (and I'm not arguing with your opinion of the film itself for a reason), but without Weaving the film wouldn't have had the popularity it did.

Munich-Really enjoyed this last night, its about the true story of Israeli athletes being taken hostage by palistinians at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and the subsquent hunt for the hostage takers by a Mossad secret agent and his team, this is a Steven Spielberg film so you know your not going to be disappointed...its stars Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Ciaran Hinds and Geoffrey Rush...this is a top class film....9

I saw Oblivion. Not bad but not great. It seems that hollywood is on a scienefiction spree. Because of after Earth is coming soon too.

Several years Deep Impact and Armageddon launched almost simultanious.

Now with Oblivion, After earth and even the game Destiny, it seems the same concept is being used in different ways. I find this a very strange phenomenon.

Oblivion - 6.5/10

+ Very nice audio, very nice visuals, good music for the most part (M83, also cool to see the female vocalist from the Röyksopp collaboration do the vocals for the end credits). Lots of eye candy in conclusion...

- Poor acting (goes for everybody except for Morgan Freeman ;)), awkward timing, weird pace.

Jack Reacher-I was more interested in this one as ive read the book...the books are about an ex-decorated military serviceman and cop who after doing his duty becomes a drifter and goes from place to place solving crime caes that involve other former military serviceman...Tom Cruise stars as Jack Reacher, who in this one helps get justice for a guy who was framed for shooting dead five people...also stars David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins and Roberd Duvall...this is a good action drama, Cruise is good as Reacher (but not great) there were some things that werent in the film that were in the book and theres a really good car chase scene that wasnt in the book (Reacher drives a red chevelle SS!)...i quite enjoyed this...7
I just watched this movie on Sunday. I liked the movie at the beginning but towards the end it kept getting worse, it almost seemed like a satire at parts.

Alot of Tom Cruise films seem to be lacking lately.

I agree with the SciFy genre being squeezed, After Earth seems deferent, almost alien. (But similar to I Am Legend - lonely, strange and scientific)

I watched Iron Man 3 in the cinema last week. I didn't particularly like it. I'm not too in to the whole comic related movies that are being released lately, except Thor, I enjoyed that.

I wasn't a fan of Iron Man 1 either, from that I didn't even watch Iron Man 2, which I heard wasn't that great anyway. So I'm glad I didn't waste my time watching it. Other than that I quite liked Robert Downey Jr's strange sense of humour. He never fails to make me laugh, which made the movie watchable. Great actor. 👍

The Impossible
Now this is a movie you want to see. I'd heard amazing things from everyone about this movie and it lived up to what I'd heard. I quite literally don't remember blinking for the duration of the film, I was that drawn in to it.

The Impossible is about the Indian Ocean Tsunami that hit in 2004. A family become separated amidst the chaos and this is based upon their story. Although it emphasises the fact that this story is true at the beginning, I don't know how much if it is entirely. It's truly epic though, a very, very emotional masterpiece.

Go watch it! 10/10

Bad Lieutenant (Abel Ferrara, 1992) -- While investigating a young nun's rape, a corrupt New York City police detective, with a serious drug and gambling addiction, tries to change his ways and find forgiveness. So much better than the remake, this very nasty movie shows the downward spiral of a dirty copy and his drug, gambling and sexual addictions that take him deeper and deeper into despair. The cop really is bad, so there is thankfully no compassion nor pity from the viewer, with an ending that freally shows what could be believable for the character. This is not a movie to watch for its entertainment value, but it's excellent in terms of character development and plot, as long as you don't expect a nice story. 7/10

La Battaglia di Algeri (a.k.a. The Battle of Algiers) (Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966) -- An account of the bloodiest revolution in modern history. This is the type of movie that usually draws me away from the typical blockbusters, the aliens, the clichés and the rom-coms. With its black and white crudeness and the the dramatic issues of the Algerian rebellion against the French, this movie has the realistic appearance of a chronicle with loads of intellectual honesty. There's no black and white characters, but what seem like real people with real doubts about whether they'll leave a bomb at a café, and policemen who struggle to save someone from being killed by a riot. There's also a high amount of political incorrectness, police brutality and altogether reality. 9/10

Life of Pi (Ang Lee, 2012) -- A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger. This is one of those movies that have left a lasting impression on myself. There is never a dull moment in this movie, in fact the story is woven so tightly that you never realize that the script is so simple, even when most of it takes place on a small boat and the stress that pertains to that fact is always present. Ang Lee captured the beauty and colors of India and also gets the best actors to portray the characters. Truly excellent movie about the power of imagination, and filmed in an amazing quality that makes me want to watch it again. 8.5/10

kDrTc2B.jpg

Reversal of Fortune (Barbet Schroeder, 1990) -- Wealthy Sunny von Bülow lies brain-dead, husband Claus guilty of attempted murder; but he says he's innocent and hires Alan Dershowitz for his appeal. I've always liked Jeremy Irons, and though I think his performance in Dead Ringers is the best he's done, I watched this movie expecting to be impressed again. I actually was, but not as much; still, the movie itself isn't that good, but the saving grace is definitely the acting. Ron Silver, Irons (he got the Oscar for it) and Glenn Close put in stellar performances in this character study that is spooky but amusing, although its mostly action free until the very end, but the actual mystery is never resolved, building up for some nice after-movie chatting and being amazed by the simple story, made better thanks to its characters and their acting. 6.5/10

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Literally just finished watching it in the theatre. Will keep my review short and snappy. Basically my perception of the movie was - O.K. we're back at where we left off from the first one >> good but not great yet >> getting better >> good >> very good >> excellent.

Just a heads up my review above is a somewhat influenced after reading plenty of less than favorable reviews on Iron Man 3. The one that comes to mind is associated with a little university publication from The University of Auckland called Craccum (kudos if you can find it). In any case; truthful or dare I say highly opinionated semi-professional film critics reviews don't matter when your film is currently breaking box office records around the globe ;). Call me a fanboy but RDJ's portrayal of a superhero is a great spin on what the classic term meant.

Anyway go see ST:ID you liked the first one and are into movies (which I assume you would be if you're reading this thread :P).

Star Trek Into Darkness.

It was a better film than the previous one IMO, high entertainment value and great visuals. If you liked the first one, I'd highly recommend it. 8/10.

Dogtooth

The movie is about a family who lives in total isolation from the real world. The parents have chosen to live this way and forced their kids to as well. The kids act super strange and have no knowledge at all of little things even a 4yr old would know. I'm not sure where this was filmed but they do not speak English and it's all subtitles. When things happen that the kids don't know of the parents will make up a complete lie to explain it. For example the pay a security guard to be a hooked for their son and she uses the word zombie. The kid later ask his mom what the word means and the mom responds by telling him it means little yellow flower. Later in the movie two little yellow flowers are growing on the grass and the son screams to his mom two zombies are growing. I say kids but they are at least 20. It is a super weird life they all lead. Overall the extreme strangeness of their life is what makes the movie so interesting. You literally have no idea what will happen next since they live such a strange life.

Star Trek: Into Darkness 3D

STID_domestic_poster.jpg

Star Trek Into Darkness is definitely one of the best Trek films to date. From the word "Go", the film never bogs down or goes dull. The films villain, "John Harrison" (see the film for his real identity) is one of the best villains of all time, even surpassing Darth Vader.

The 3D version was impressive on all accounts, it really shined when the Enterprise goes to warp speed and when the Enterprise gets blown to bits. You could see the hull plating falling off, as if it were about to hit you. I can imagine the IMAX 3D version is just as impressive.

My only gripe is that the film suffered from a lack of space battles, only one existed and it was less than 2 minutes long, but I guess Star Trek isn't just about the battles.

If you enjoyed Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan or the original J.J Abrams reboot, you'll love Into Darkness.

9/10
