Iron Man - Pretty good? My gripe about this movie was that I felt like I was one, two, sometimes probably three steps ahead of the darn thing. SFX was pretty decent. It was interesting role for Downey Jr. Gwyneth Paltrow never looked hotter. I hate product placement, but come on, it was R8*. But it just comes right back to the predictability. It wasn't completely boring, but it kinda was. "C+"

Speed Racer - What a surprise! I've never seen Speed Racer-anything before, but as soon as I heard about the production of this flick, I was thinking this could get bad.... I heard that Wachowski Brothers were involved, but I saw the trailer, and it looked baaaad. Still I rented it, because it's only a buck to rent it from redbox, and it has Jack from "Lost". I told myself, you can't go wrong.

I'm not going to lie, I was not impressed by the visual at all. SFX? Sucks. Style? LMAO. But way everything was presented, playful way actors played the characters, it won me over. I can't remember the last time I saw a funnier fighting sequence. By the way, soundtrack(or score, I guess) is awesome.

Speed Racer I think is a kids movie. Good vs Evil presented in overly simplified manner. Many critics voted this movie down, according to rottentomatoes.com. But majority of the users on the site approved of it, I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who enjoyed this movie.

The movie affected my emotion little bit(no, I didn't cry, that's not what I mean), and I certainly did not see that coming. And yes, Jack from Lost was absolutely money. "B+" :)👍

I was gonna say that you guys need to see more movies, but you guys are probably pretty young. I don't know what's Nick's excuse is...... :P j/k

I hate product placement
Why do you even try watching movies? They all have product placement.

You only have five years on me and I thought Iron Man was awesome. But at the same time I was looking to have fun.

Perhaps you aren't/weren't a comic geek?

Best movie ever? No. One of the better fun movies this year? Yes.
I wasn't looking for Citizen Kane. I wasn't looking for art. I was looking for a comic book movie, and I got one of the best ones so far.

The Orphanage - I found this film a little bit confusing, but then again, I wasn't fully focused. It got so long, I started fast forwarding a little bit, about mid way through.

A month or two ago, my buddy tells me that Orphanage is the new, scary film by Guillermo Del Toro(Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone). I pretty much consider Guillermo a "one of the greatest" in the making. One of my two favorite Spanish directors, too.

Anyway, so I get into the movie, and while it is a breathtakingly beautiful film, it is slow as hell. As a fan of his works, I'm wondering what's going on. It turns out the Orphanage is a Del Toro Produced film, directed by a first time director, Juan Antonio Bayona.

Forgive me, but I'm not going to get into the story itself, as I found it very confusing. I'll just confuse you guys, if I tried to explain the plot. It is scary, it is beautifully shot, it is touching(maybe heartbreaking)...... if you can actually finish watching it. I'd give it a "B-". Not at all bad debut for the first timer, Bayona. If only more film makers put this much work into their films!
Hay! I could pull out the "ur taste challenged car" card. :P
Just like my films & music, I like to think that I just have broader range of taste. :sly:

All of them? Really? Let me put it this way, I don't notice product placement in many of the movies I see. Some Hollywood films however, it's every few minutes. And I'm only human, Audi R8 in Iron Man did not bother me at all. Because it's an awesome, beautiful car. I thought it fit the part perfectly.

But nasty, cheap a$$* Burger King, after crying about real American cheese burger? Wasn't this guy some billionaire? And the best he can do is a Burger King..... That, to me, is nonsense. I hope you see where I'm coming from. *Don't get me wrong, I eat Burger King, too. Just trying to make a point.

No, I did not go into Iron Man expecting Kubrick, Kurosawa, anything like that. I'm a guy who can have fun watching good B-Movies. Reading your post, I don't think you read mine. Here is what I said:

"Iron Man - Pretty good? My gripe about this movie was that I felt like I was one, two, sometimes probably three steps ahead of the darn thing. SFX was pretty decent. I said it was pretty good(yes, I had to add question mark by it, but you know me :P). And I don't know about you, but rarely, I can have real fun watching a new movie, when you are pretty much guessing the whole movie, as soon as it starts.
Perhaps you aren't/weren't a comic geek?
Not of the inferior American ones, no. I'm kidding! :D Sometimes it helps me that I don't know the original works, sometimes not. I have no idea if it helped here or not. My favorite comic-to-film is probably the X-Men series. I really liked all three. Some of the Batman's good, too.
Best movie ever? No. One of the better fun movies this year? Yes.

My comment was referring to Iron Man easily being one of the best movies ever, but as you can see in my post, I was just being playful. ;)

Let me rephrase: Why do you even try watching any Hollywood movies?

I just accept it and move on, mainly because most of it is stuff I see in real life anyway, I just don't typically have the label turned directly toward me.

You must really hate some of Mike Myers' movies, like Wayne's World and Austin Powers.

MMMMM, Whopper. I could actually see me doing that, except it would be a Double-Quarter Pounder with cheese from McDonald's. Super Size, please.

It was the C+ that got me. Maybe it is just that I turn my brain off. But I have too on comic movies because I already know the story. And if you are referring to the villain, I don't think that was ever meant to be hidden.

Not of the inferior American ones, no. I'm kidding! :D
Why I outta.....:D
Read The Watchmen, thank me later.

My favorite comic-to-film is probably the X-Men series. I really liked all three.
Even three? Hurm.

Just thank god you're not in Minority Report or our advertising system is based on that movie. I'd have killed myself.

I do accept it, which actually explains why I don't notice a lot of it. But sometimes, they stick it, blatantly, in your face. Usually, when I start feeling like I'm watching commercials, it becomes a turnoff.

If you are going for a fast food burger, Carl's Jr is where it's at. Everybody knows this! :P

Buddy, it was "C+" to me. I already said I enjoy watching a lot of crap. On the film being predictable, it wasn't about any hidden surprises in the plot. I just saw everything coming. Don't forget that I did dig parts of the film, and I did like the Iron Man, overall.
Why I outta.....:D
Read The Watchmen, thank me later.
Apples & oranges, I know. :D I'll try.
Even three? Hurm.
I probably didn't care for it that much at first. But yeah, all three.

I'm lost. Only thing that register in my brain from your comment:

Billion Dollar Brain 1967

A deranged oil tycoon and Texas billionaire tries to start WWIII with Russia. Sound familiar?

Michale Caine plays Harry Palmer, a British Secret Service agent. Yeah, it's a spoof, of sorts, of James Bond, and not a very good one. It's not meant to be a comedy, but it is a joke. Not many funny laughs and didn't mean to be a comedy, but would have been a lot better if they tried.

Not very exciting or entertaining, like James Bond movies, so it's unfair to compare them in that way, but what else are you going to compare a movie like this too? A bad one, maybe. In more words, it's a James Bond flick with a very, very low budget and not very good directing. No doubt the kind of stuff that inspired the Austin Powers movies.5/10

How To Lose Friends And Alienate People
Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Megan Fox.

Small time celeb writer gets big time in NY, I really liked this film, yes some parts of the story line are in and out, almost rushed, but Simon plays the character very well, (slightly similar to his Hot Fuzz character) has a feel good and aspirational mood about the whole film. Kirsten Dunst is almost MaryJane Watson but her character is also very well done. Megan Fox is just eye candy and the 3rd main character of the film. There are alot of laugh out loud moments, at least one every 5 minutes and I would recommend to anyone.

8.6/10

You Don't Mess With The Zohan - It's pretty good, and there were couple of parts that had me laughing very hard. But this is one of those comedy that rely too much on sex related jokes. It's hilarious when you throw some in, here & there. But this is one of those flicks, it was almost like they built the movie with all these cheap sex jokes. Still, pretty good rental, I'll probably buy it used. "C+"

The Visitor - Here is a film that was made by people who respects you, the viewers. Sadly, that doesn't happen a whole lot on rental DVDs. :dopey:

The film is about this worn out professor, who is trying to learn to play piano. It's not going too well. One day, the university forces him to take a trip to NY, for representation. When he enters this apartment he keeps in NY, he runs into a young (illegal)immigrant couple, who were just conned into moving into to his apartment on a scam. Professor feeling sorry for them, he lets them stay. Tarek, the young man, he turns out to be a real sincere, likeable kid. They become friends, and when Professor take interest in Tarek's work as an African drummer, he offers to teach the professor how to play it.

Acting is pretty spot on. Casting is very solid, but especially the two who plays the young couple, you've never seen them before, and they are awesome in this. Guy who plays the professor, I don't know his name, but we've seen him in 100 movies. He always plays some kind of government/military officials, and this must be one of his best works ever, if not the best. Just about everything is topnotch in this film, but my only gripe might be that they didn't sugarcoat the end. It's not bad, but it's definitely not an Hollywood ending. I've been corrupted, what can I say. "A+"

Hope and Glory - 1987

A very funny comedy/drama film about the life of a pre-teen boy and his family in England during the start of WWII. It's is as simple as that.

This is a definite DON'T MISS movie. Very funny scenes, dialog and characters. 8.5/10

There Will Be Blood - 7/10

Hmm... well I'll just say if it wasn't for that hilarious ending this movie would've gotten a 0 or been classified worse than Lost in translation. I found myself asking where all the blood was during the whole movie... Well, the parts where I wasn't snoozing anyway. I just don't get all the hype surrounding this movie. : shrugs:

I thought it was an amazing movie. I guess you were going into it with the expectation of typical Hollywood formulas of violence and action. I don't think there was an obvious plot line, the movie is basically following a man's descend into madness by his own greed and arrogance. You have to admit Daniel Day's acting was nothing short of perfection, and the cinematography was extremely well done. The music matches Daniel's personality perfectly and adds well to the movie. Overall an extremely well done movie but I guess it's not for the Rush Hour 2 crowd.

Well said. Although I would have left out the derogatory "Rush Hour 2 crowd" comment. I was enthralled with the movie. The soundtrack was brilliant. Very different than your average score. Very fitting for the character.

;)

Yeah maybe I could have left it out but It's frustrating sometimes when I see good art go so easily ignored.

I was surprised to hear that the score was the guitarist from Radiohead, and yeah he nailed it.

Believe me, I know how you feel. Being a fan of David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, Bunuel, and other directors that think outside the box is not always easy, when the majority of the population has blinders on to such beautiful works of art.

I was surprised to hear that the score was the guitarist from Radiohead, and yeah he nailed it.

Absolutely. I don't think people truly understand what a chore it can be to create a soundtrack for a film. Many people try, and many fail. I think he did a smashing job all around.

Have you seen the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford yet? That movie I see in the same light as There Will Be Blood. The music, acting, and cinematography all mesh so well. Amazing movie with so many tense moments that really left me exhausted. Some say the movie is a bit long and a few times it was kinda dragging on but there are scenes of that movie that I can't stop thinking about. Beautiful dialogue and acting, at the end I don't know who I should hate and who I should like. Both Pitt and Affleck add a lot complexity to the characters.

And yeah, Lynch hah; what can be said about Eraserhead?

I have not seen it yet. I'm heading to Blockbuster after work, so I'll check it out. Thank you for the recommendation. 👍

Quite an interesting film. Not for everyone, as has been stated. "Mulholland Drive" is another one that seems to fly over peoples heads. I always hear people complaining about the cheesy acting towards the beginning of the film. The cheesy acting is there for a reason. It's a clue like anything else. I can understand his films are not for everyone. There's no action, no simple plot line, and very abstract structure. Yet, I can't help but be moved by some of his films (his latest was the weakest in my opinion.)

:odd: I never had a desire to watch it, but I was over at a friend's house. I only heard about the hype and I guess I missed the memo. I have not watched Rush Hour 2 either...

That's exactly what I thought when I first started watching Mulholland Drive and in fact gave up the first time half way through hah. I read up on it and learned what was actually going on. Watching it knowing some of the plot made for a damn good experience. I appreciate Lynch a lot more now. Plus Naomi Watts naked is always a good time hah.

I still haven't figured that film out. Maybe I should go look for some clues on the interweb.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua - (4/10)
My wife wanted to see it, because she has a chihuahua. I fell asleep. I never fall asleep during movies. That is how bad this was. Cute? Yes. Good acting? No. Good writing? No. Good CGI effects? No. Plot? Watch The Aristocats and replace cats with dogs.

If you value your sanity do not go see this.

4/10?!

Which really goes without saying. I'm sorry for your loss. lol
I rarely rate movies worse than 5 or 6. Fortunately, I had four beers in my belly. That was a stipulation for me going to see this with her. I got to drink beer and watch football at my favorite bar first.
