Hey,

So I'm currently picking my grade 12 courses however I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. All I know is this:

1) It should make lots of money (6 digits)
2) It should have a good career outlook
3) The career field should be relatively safe
4) I don't like the sciences whatsoever.

What career should I go into?

I was going to go into law, but got scared away at how miserable lawyers are and also how hard it is to land a proper law job after university.

I was also considering Engineering, but apparently landing a job there is hard too.

I'm thinking about being a Financial Planner, but I'm still weary in terms of finding a job after university that makes decent $$$.

What you are asking for is impossible to garruntee. Their is no easy and safe job that makes you lots of money, you have to work hard to get there. Hence why you need to pick an area that you are interested in so you are motivated to work at it.

If you are good at maths then a career in banking and financial may be good, however they are no where near garunteed careers, you need to work had at university to get a job in any top bank.

Engineering propects are actually relatively good at the moment, the situation is pretty dire in most careers however engineering is probably one of the better ones. I'm looking at engineering however you need very good grades (a*,a,a) at A levels to get into a top/good university for mechanical engineering.

Computer programmers are in incredible demand right now. My dad works for a software company, and is desperate to hire people.I'm not sure that they'll get paid 6 figures, but some companies will. My friend's older brother landed a job at Microsoft, with a starting salary of 106 grand.

Undertaker. People will always be dying.
Don't be just any undertaker. Be THE Undertaker:

Avoiding an occupation because for this reason is quite frankly pitiful. If you want a six figure job that is easy to get, good luck buddy. Getting a six figure lifestyle isn't easy. Pick something you like and do it. If you're trying to pick an occupation based on the criteria you provided, you're just asking to be miserable.

Asking the internet is not necessarily a good idea, either. You should talk to your career counselor, as they seem to know a lot about careers.

Here's a crazy idea, how about choosing a career based on something you actually like instead of just being able to, "make lots of money"?

Also like Schwartz said, good luck with finding an easy profession with a six figure guarantee. There's a reason why some jobs pay highly. Being easy is never one of those reasons.

This happens to be very similar what I plan to do myself - I'm better at the security aspect of computers, though. The local college has one of the top 20 computer security courses in the country, and I enjoy the work.

My suggestion is when picking your courses is to pick courses that you like to do. It's not uncommon for people to be in the same situation as you. I know people in my class who still don't have a 100% idea of what they want to do and we've just graduated. Hopefully a job that appeals to you comes about due to your course selection.

Yes, there is. First reply in the thread :

From my little research it looks like the average salary is around $80,000 U.S.(which is about the same as the Aussie dollar currently) He wants a 6 digit salary.

It depends on how good you are and how hard you look. Try looking for smaller companies that are growing, possibly actively hiring. If you have good grades (and more importantly experience, doing FSAE in college got me my job) your chances will go up considerably.

There's also doing your own start up if you have an idea.

One thing that worries me in this thread is that I see no drive. You mentioned what you don't like. What about what you do like? There must be something. Even if it's ridiculous. I'd say start from there. You're more likely to make money if what you are doing is something you won't mind going through for 50 years.

I like Engineering and Business.

I was really planning on being a Mining Engineer, but my father (Engineer, has a PhD), said that the situation in the Engineering field isn't very promising in terms of being sucessfull.

His field specifically, or all of engineering? Engineering is really broad. Really, really broad. It's hard to label it all under one group.

Engineering involves lots of physics and maths. Since you don't like sciences, it's probably not for you.

I like Math, getting a 95% in it. He said in terms of Civil Engineering, its very competitive and jobs are not as easy to find as it seems.
