What to do with your pocket change?

  • Roll it up and bank/exchange it. A penny saved is a penny not spent on crack.

After spending and hour and forty-five minutes yesterday rolling up coins for spending money (Whoo hoo...$67.50), I started to think this is a huge waste of time. Granted, I don't make that kind of money at work, but this was about 3 years of spare change in the making.

So what the heck do you do with it?

If I'm given a penny change at a shop I usually put it in a collection box if there is one. If there isn't I' throw it at something I dislike.

I usually throw it in a big clear water jug of mine. Sometimes I'll keep some change on my dresser, in case I need any for gas or a soda or something. I plan on exchanging it for bills one day; I should have close to eighty bucks in there.

I throw it all into a drawer in my bedroom. . . I go through it maybe once or twice a year depending on how fast it fills up. . . Normally I can get about $150-$200 out of that drawer. . .

I've got an old poland springs bottles (like the one below) that sits on the floor in my room and I put all my spare change in it. It's almost half way full now.

You realise when that 5-gallon jar is full, you won't be able to lift it yourself? (Well, maybe Solid Lifters can.)

My change goes in a clear Lucite dish I made in 8th grade shop class. It's still the only thing I've ever made with Lucite!

There are some supermarkets that have machines that sort loose change and give you a receipt for that you can take to the register and redeem for bills. They charge something like 4-6% for the transaction.

I do this all the time with my loose change. Put it in a bowl until it is full, take it to the machine. Put $100 bucks in my pocket and buy my wife and I a nice dinner.

loose change = extra food for me... lol

Don't save pennies except to carry some around in order to avoid getting more pennies. They aren't worth the effort of saving and rolling them. But silver coin adds up surprisingly quickly - in fact I need to purge my drawer here pretty soon.

I disagree. I have a good $50 in pennies alone. They are great for putting in a pillow sack and whacking intruders over the head with.

I have two plans of attack to keep change down: I always keep it in my wallet (and use it when shopping), and if I have too much to put in my wallet, then I trade it for cash money with my mom (who keeps change in jars). There was actually a time for several weeks that I didn't have any change at all because of this. Works pretty well.

I live with my girlfriend. I have NO spare money of any variety.

that is funny because change is my only money. . . I feel your pain though. . . I give Kristen my pay checks every week, well I use too, now I don't know what to do with them. . .

I'll either drop my change on some soda, a subway token, or if I have any left at the end of the day, i'll give it to one of the homeless people when I leave school.

Funny thing is, last summer, I had about $100 in coins spread throughout my room. I converted that to cash and now I've already got about $80 in coins... I'm gonna put them all in a plastic bag and go down to EB on a very busy day and buy myself ESPN Fight Night 2004 with the coins

tell me about it. . . oil changes are how much??? changing tires cost how much??? Killing spiders in the house??? It is great I could go on for days : )

But I make an effort to save all of the change with cash we spend, kinda like a server, they really don't give change. . .

I've been saving all my change sense I was 18.7 years latter I've got one of those water jugs about a third of the way full.

Oh and by the way I don't save pennies.I just flick them at people.

There. Much more truthful.

Nice touch with the misspelling, duke. You really captured the essence of Tercel. Now just work on making the grammar unreadable.

I save all my change. I find that I have nothing but pennies and nickels though because I use all of my quarters on bus fare.

You don't drive to school?

neither do I...bus is cheaper. Parking at my school is about $1500/semester. I could use that money for better things - like tuition
