thanks for that, ill give it a try. another considerably good car is the s2000. get a stock '03 or '99, mod to 400+hp with a stage1/2 exhaust and vwala.

Another nice sounding car is the Mitsubishi FTO GPX '99 with everything except turbo, clutch and flywheel...use the semi-racing exhaust and there u go. Its very distinctive. I dunno, maybe its just me coz i cruise on a fto that sounds identical to this one, i love it

I wanted to revive this thread today because I experienced something incredible.

I have a 5.1 dolby surround system, I put the volume to MAX! (03)

I take out the Corvette 69' race car....go to La Sarthe, all I can say is WOAH!

The best sounding car in GT4 easily! At idle it's crazy! It'll make you wet your pants!

My dad came down in the basement, and sat there, for 10 minutes while I did burnouts and drifts in the car, he was stunned:|.

He said it made him remember when he was a kid and the neighbor had a Corvette, it sounded as beastly as the one in GT4.

I was set to say the Mercedes SL 55 AMG but then I bought a Mercedes SL 600 (R129) and put semi racing muffler on it. It makes it sound like a true V12, A.K.A. a low displacement high revving Ferrari 12 cylinder, like a Testarossa's or a 575's

If you are refering to the Testarosas from the 80's, they were flat 12's. :sly:

Odd how only one person mentioned the Classic GTO, but then again, it's so deathly quiet...

Okay, another fave. Buy a Shigeno Version Trueno, get the oil change and the refreshening. Now drive it.... It sounds exactly like my uncorked 4-AK73A Nova! :scared:

However, they were not horizontally opposed 12s. They were really just powered by a 180 degrees V12. A true horizontally opposed engine would have cylinders on both sides aligned with each other, hence, the name. All horizontally opposed engines are flat, but not all flat engines are horizontally opposed.

Sorry to be a nit-pick. :dunce: Just making sure that everyone knew that tidbit. 👍 :D

Would that be like a Boxer engine, like in Porches and Subarus?
Also, I know the Testarossa has a flat 12, that's why I said Ferrari 12 cylinder. I was just saying that every V-12 should sound like one, but point taken. I should have phased it better.

I don't understand- If there are 2 banks 180 degrees apart, isn't it an H-12?
Looks like an H-12... :scared:

I haven't seen a "H-12" before.... Although I do know of a H16 that was used by BRM in the late 60's.

http://members.madasafish.com/~d_hodgkinson/brm-e-H16.htm

In this case, the reason it's called a H16 is not because it's horizontally opposed (which is ironic considering that, in a way, it is), but because of the shape of the configuration.

It had a horizontally opposed 8-cylinder engine on top of another, forming a 'H' shape. This can be seen from the front and rear, where the 'H' can be seen lying on its side, with 4 cylinder rows of 4 forming the legs.

But to answer your original question, the Testarossa Flat 12 (whose design originates from the Flat 12 design in 70's Ferrari F1 cars) is not horizontally opposed. This is an understandable mistake. The thing that gives it away is the fact that the two banks of cylinders don't face each other at all. The "bottom" of the piston faces "empty" space on the other side. Like this:

|[-------0888888
8888880-------]|
|[-------0888888
8888880-------]|

A horizontally opposed engine is like this:

|[-------0-------]|
|[-------0-------]|
|[-------0-------]|
|[-------0-------]|

See? :sly:

@Toronado: Yes, the engine I refer to as "horizontally opposed" is commonly known as the Boxer.

I'm not sure if I'm reading your diagram correctly, but thanks for taking the time to explain. :)
I infer that this engine's banks are somewhat offset, whereas the boxer's bores are on-axis? How can that be?

A horozontally opposed engine is like this, where the "0" is the crank and the ":::::::" are the bores:

:::::::0:::::::

The boxer motor's configuration is refered to as H- motors. Like my Subaru is a H-4, not to be confused with an I-4, and the 911 is a H-6, not to be confused with a V-6. Am I missing something? :)

My bad, they are referred to as H4 or H6 for short.

Sorry my explanation was a bit broad, but basicly with a boxer engine it has to have each connecting rod on its own arm of the crankshaft, or something... It's a completley different design from the engine in the Testarossa 512 TR and 512 M. The 512 BB (Berlinetta Boxer) was a boxer, the others were not. So I guess the Testarossa was boxer powered, at least the 512 BB was.

Blargh. Me head is exploding. :banghead:
