Wii U Latest News and Discussion

From what I've read, the Gamepad won't be sold seperately at retail stores initially, but will be offered separately through Nintendo directly in NA. Later on the Gamepad will be offered separately through retail stores. Time will tell what Nintendo offically does with the Gamepad.

Wii U CPU, GPU & RAM Dynasty Warrior Dev Interview

Eurogamer
Akihiro Suzuki, producer of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, admitted this was the case when quizzed by Eurogamer, and pointed to the Wii U's CPU by way of explanation.

"One of the weaknesses of the Wii U compared to PS3 and Xbox 360 is the CPU power is a little bit less," he said. "So for games in the Warriors series, including Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi, when you have a lot of enemies coming at you at once, the performance tends to be affected because of the CPU. "Dealing with that is a challenge."

The exact specifications of the CPU, including clock speed, remain undisclosed for now, but developers, including those Eurogamer spoke to for an investigation into the power of the Wii U, have confirmed it's slower than the CPU inside both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

But one of its strengths is said to be its custom AMD 7 series GPU, and the 1GB of RAM available to games: double that of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
This, Suzuki said, means the Orochi development team had the opportunity to create visuals better than those possible on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Note I haven't read many of these posts, but what I don't get is why no one is talking about this console!? It's supposed to be more powerful than the XBox 360 and the PS3, so I don't get why it's not a headliner everywhere you go. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Having a new console that's a bit more powerful than the current stuff is not something that's really amazing.

It falls under the category of expected.

As for people not talking about it...I think most are waiting for the next Xbox and Playstation. That, and Nintendo's library of games arguably aren't as AAA as most hype machines would like.

That is what I said in my initial post. However, Nintendo of Japan has already confirmed that they are selling the gamepad separately(because you can't have official support for two of them for nothing you know). It was Reggie who made the call to withhold release of the gamepad in stores during the launch window in NA because there was, a, no games that support them during that time, and b, Reggie wanted to maximize supply for the consoles, and he can't do that while selling the pads as accessories.

You are both right and wrong. You are right in the sense that they are waiting for the PS4/720, however most of the blame is placed on the developers themselves as they see Nintendo consoles as a quick way to get a few bucks on cheap ports. The launch lineup speaks for itself.

Nintendo Wii U To Be Region Locked

Computer and Videogames
Nintendo will implement a region lock process for its Wii U hardware, the company has confirmed to CVG.

It means that games bought in the US, Europe or Japan will only be accessible for machines built for those regions.

Region-locking devices is a longstanding Nintendo policy that has been in place across numerous games consoles including the 3DS, Wii, GameCube, N64, SNES and NES.

Platform holders Sony and Microsoft take a different stance to region-locking. Both allow publishers to decide whether they want to lock games to continents, of which in most cases they do not.

I see that ZombieU has a couple of posts in this thread. There is also some of the Wii U functionality in relationship to the game in these two Dev Diary type vids.

Two different stories from Activision regarding Call Of Duty Elite for the Wii U

Call of Duty Elite will not launch with Black Ops 2 on Wii U

Activision Rep
“We are currently evaluating options for Call of Duty Elite to support Nintendo’s Wii U game system, however Call of Duty Elite for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will not support this platform when the game launches on November 13th,”

Activision has ‘no plans’ to bring Call of Duty Elite to Wii U

Gimme Gimme Games
Call of Duty Black Ops 2′s producer, Nevin Dravinski recently confirmed what many of us have speculated.

He stated that Activision has no plans to bring the Call of Duty Elite service to Nintendo’s next home console. He says that if there is an overwhelming demand for it, then they will pull the necessary string to get it on the console.

But at the moment, it just isn’t happening. That said, the Wii U will receive the Nuketown 2025 map and all future DLC for the game so I wouldn’t be too concerned about this.

Capcom: We could create a unique Resident Evil game on Wii U

Resident Evil Revelations director Koshi Nakanishi
The Wii U certainly looks like it will enable creators to come up with all kinds of never-before-seen gameplay ideas," said Nakanishi. "There are lots of things I'd like to try out on it.

If I was to work on a game for the Wii U, I would definitely want to make something that couldn't be done on any other hardware.

The GamePad's separate screen enables so many possibilities, and playing on a television screen would enable sharing the experience in a way that wasn't possible on Nintendo 3DS. I feel it would let us create a very unique and fun Resident Evil game.

One of the least hyped/promoted system launches I've witnessed since the Saturn. Not that it matters as pre-orders seem great

Wii U info

Nintendo revealed new details on Wii U USB storage and virtual console. Wii U will support USB storage for up to 2TB. For the Wii U internal storage, 4.2GB will be used by the system software, for a 8GB Basic System, you only get 3GB free space; for a 32GB Deluxe unit, you get 25GB free space.....

-Wii U will have Parental Control to restrict content based on user age, -CERO/ESRB rating, Internet functionality, eShop spending, and more

-Wii U keyboard input will have predictive input based on usage, it becomes more accurate the more you use it

-Miiverse settings can be switched on and off depending on the save profiles

-The 8GB Basic Unit will have 3GB free space for game data, the 32GB Deluxe Unit will have 25GB free space

-New Super Mario Bros. U is 2GB, and NintendoLand is 3.2GB, you cannot save both games into the internal storage of the 8GB Basic Unit

-You can install game data to USB storage, Wii U supports USB storage up to 2TB

-You can only connect to one USB storage device at a time

-Nintendo cannot guarantee external HDD functionality if it does not have external power source

-External USB storage must be formatted to Wii U format, once it is formatted you cannot use it on a personal computer

Wait, so the only versions available are 3.2GB and 25GB usable? That's it? And the USB storage has to be mains powered? That is really poor.

I know it seems very odd. In this day and age of digital downloads. E -Shop, PSN etc. you would think they would be throwing memory space at you by the bucket load.

I have similar issues with the vita. I'd love to go purely digital for the convenience but the memory is so damn expensive.

The ideal option would be a code supplied with physical copies for the digi version too.

Xbox 4 gig and PS3 12gig are just as silly also.

I can understand offering a lower sized version, some people just don't need the space but not offering anything larger than 32GB internal, 25GB usable is just insane. I'd think 120GB should be the bare minimum.

Nintendo don't want my money, because they don't offer enough space to download content. That's not my problem it' Nintendos. I can buy digital content on PS3 or PS4 in the future.

Maybe it's coming with the Wii U pad pro.

Or Xbox.

The only thing I can think of is that they simply didn't have enough room for a 2.5" HDD in there without making it bigger than they wanted. The 8GB and 32GB versions are obviously Flash memory.

I will buy a Wii U, because i don't want to miss some great First Party games. But i'm disappointed with their HDD decision.

Nintendo posted some pictures. They don't have enough space. In my opinion storage is more important than a small console.

I haven't seen those pictures but you wonder why it's so big, the hardware isn't much beyond what's in the PS3 slim mk2.

ZombiU Launch Trailer

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge Momiji Trailer

Razor's Edge seems to have taken a slight hit graphically compared to the other console versions, but has better & more content.

has there been news of a quality racing wheel being made for the wii u or a current one being made to work for it?

Nope, and since the triggers (and I assume all the buttons) on the WiiU gamepad are digital instead of analog, I don't think anything other than arcade racers will be available on it.

Wii U gets 1-5GB firmware update

Gaming Bolt
Nintendo Network will not be shipped with the launch systems, Nintendo has said. Instead you will have to download it and the update is something that will blow your mind. It’s reported that the system will have a 5GB initial firmware update which will add the Nintendo Network to the system.

Well this is not the greatest of starts:

Numerous Wii U owners have reported encountering a serious issue with the new console related to a large day one update required to access the system's online features.

The update, which reportedly weighs in at 5GB, can take over an hour to install, and multiple users have claimed that interrupting the process has rendered their consoles unusable.
One affected party, LA Times journalist Ben Fritz, says there's no warning not to turn off the system during the install and no cancel option.

He ran into problems after unplugging his Wii U while downloading the update, and says he has since been contacted by multiple users whose consoles were also bricked when their power or internet went down mid-install.

A support message on Nintendo's US website asks new users to be patient and not to turn off the console while updating it.

"The length of time it takes to perform a system update varies depending on the speed of the Internet connection used. Please be patient," it says.

"Due to the amount of new features and applications included, the system update may take an extended amount of time when performed during the initial setup (for some users it could take an hour or more to download and install). Do not power off your system during this time."

Nintendo has also confirmed an outage to Miiverse, Wii U's embedded social networking service, which commenced last night and remains ongoing.

"So many Miis have jumped on Miiverse that some may be having problems connecting to the service," the firm added on Twitter. "We are in the engine room getting it fixed!"

Nintendo's management of online security measures has come under scrutiny after it emerged this weekend that one Wii U buyer apparently hacked into the console's online platform just hours after getting the system. Nintendo has confirmed to CVG that the incident was not a hoax, though the corporation has played down the severity of the issue.

Earlier today it was also reported that Nintendo Network accounts are currently tied to a single Wii U console, which seemingly means players won't be able to transfer their account data to a new system should their original break or go missing, resulting in the loss of any stored game progress and digital purchases. We're awaiting clarification on this matter from Nintendo.
