Wii U Latest News and Discussion

Well not ideal who powers off during updating.
Normally there's a warning not to turn off when updating or saving things.

So not only do we have day one patches for games we've now got day one "patches" for consoles. This isn't a trend I really like the idea of.

If only PD made consoles.

I played on the Wii U at a friend yesterday. He works for a gamingsite.

I have no idea why anyone would want to have such a thing. The graphics are normal for today's standard. I hate the touch-screen while looking at the tv. Maybe it's just me, I hate tablets too. I recently bought a mega tv. Awesome quality etc. Why in the world would I want a console that has me looking at two screens?

I just don't get it. Again, this is my own opinion but I am really baffeled.

I'm going to Hazard a guess that you already own one, maybe two that are capable and do such a thing.

I maybe wrong and you don't own any console.

I'm quite intrested in the addition of DiRT to the ported games list.

I'd like to know which DiRT title though and if any changes will be made from the PS3 version, or indeed if it is a new title. My hope is for the first as I never got to play that online and it would definitely benefit from some upgrading.

Picked up one for the kids (and me) on launch. I was going to wait for Christmas to let them open it, but I broke down last night.

For it's target audience, I think the Wii U will do quite well. For the hard core gamer? I don't think so.... We played Super Mario Bro's for some time last night. With my 3 1/2 and eight year old at the controls, I had my hands full on the touch screen providing block support when they missed their jumps and warding off menacing mushrooms when they got too close. The supporting "Boost Mode" role I was able to play provided entertainment for all of us. The kids were also able to play their old Wii games. This unit replaced our broken launch Wii console that failed last year. I also picked up Zombie U for the misses, but we haven't tried that yet.

We needed something for our youngest that was mild. The Xbox and PS3 games were just too violent for the little guy. The Wii provides titles that are more geared for the little guy than the teenager/adult gamer.

Miyamoto: Nintendo will help developers get the most out of Wii U if they are willing to produce experiences that are only available on Wii U.

Official Nintendo Magazine.co.uk
Speaking with The Guardian, Miyamoto said: "It's a matter of how seriously they commit themselves. Our mission is to approach developers, and if they're willing to commit to experiences only available on Nintendo hardware, we are more willing to help. Each developer has his or her own ideas and we really encourage the differences."

Nintendo's Fils-Aime: Microsoft, Sony need to react to us

CNET
Speaking to CNET in a telephone interview today, Fils-Aime brushed off an assertion that the Wii U could be faced with irrelevancy issues if Microsoft and Sony launch their new consoles in the coming year, as expected.

"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," Fils-Aime told CNET. "It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U and we will."

Have Nintendo not learned from the past or are them blind to how much they have alienated third party devs over the years?

They should be throwing every tool and assistance they can at them, not demanding exclusivity to get it.

Like it or not Ubisoft, EA, Activision, etc. are not going to produce exclusives for any platform and unless Nintendo help them get around the bottlenecks the architecture seems to have your going to get ports that struggle to match the PS3 and 360, let alone what Sony and MS launch next year.

So Mr Fils-Aime is saying that looks don't matter?

Seems he has forgotten that he said this at pretty much the same time in an interview with CNN:

CNN: In terms of specs, the Wii is pretty much on par with the Xbox 360 and the PS3. But we know Sony and Microsoft are set to release new consoles next year. Aren't you worried about the timing and that the Wii U will be a generation behind your rivals?

Reggie Fils-Aime: Well first off I have to correct you. The specs are quite different than the competitive systems, much more graphically intensive. If you do a side by side comparison you would actually see third-party games like Call of Duty look dramatically better on our system.

Now aside from the totally contradictory statements with regard to if performance is important or not, BO2 is not significantly better on the Wii U at all.

Digital Foundry
“The Wii U version matches the look of the Xbox 360 game and thus gives it an edge visually over the PlayStation 3 release, but unfortunately it comes up well short in terms of performance - an aspect that is all-important to the playability of a COD title.

“The frame-rate variance is such that the PS3 game feels generally smoother, while the 360 release feels like an entirely different game in the more demanding levels. Bearing in mind the commonalities in hardware design between Wii U and Xbox 360, we can't help but feel somewhat disappointed that Black Ops 2 under-performs so noticeably.”

Now devs use of the tool set will improve over time (but as per my comment above blackmail to get assistance will not help that), they only have a limited time to do it, or risk doing a Dreamcast.

A factor not helped by a lot of confusion among the more casual market as to exactly what the Wii U is (language warning), something that Nintendo also seem to want to add to with the potential Wii Mini, which could go on release in early December.

I have to be honest and say that the Wii U looks to me to be a product that is unsure of its target audience (and Nintendo is not helping that at all), has not learned from past attitudes to third party devs and risks being outdated very soon.

A three console market has been good for gaming and good for pushing all those involved, but I can't help the feeling that the Wii U may have miss-judged a number of key factors.

Well I gave in and have just ordered a Black premium with Mario. I've owned every console and handheld since the Mega drive so just couldn't help it. My daughter is five and has just started getting interested in her hand me down DS so I'm hoping this will be the family console going forward. It'll be under the TV in the front room rather than upstairs in my gaming room. As with every new console release I'm now v excited.

Nintendo will help the developers with the use of the gamepad if they create a exclusiv game for it. This has nothing to do with the hardware itself.

Yep Slim I've used the same excuse as you. Well nearly 8 year old boy to be exact.

You haven't ordered ZombiU have you?

I keep telling myself I'm only buying one of the next gen consoles too. Time will tell.

He, he. No, the reviews I read weren't great so went for Mario, Mario in HD FTW! Got my despatch email earlier so should have it tomorrow, Christmas has come early 👍

And that makes it any less odd given Nintendo's track record with third party devs in what way?

Which is an aside as the article in question most certainly does not mention that its just assistance in regard to the pad at all, so unless you have a different source this...

... encompasses the whole of the hardware not just the pad.

Haven't had my dispatch email yet. Went with sainsburys entertainment with a 10% discount.

Order status says ready for dispatch though.

Won't get played till Christmas but I hear there's an update which comes via Nintendo speed.
Hence prior to Christmas Day I will set up and download whatever's needed so that come Christmas it a matter of plug n play and he can create his mii and such.

Don't fancy updating on Christmas Day that would be a bit of a gamble.

Adding this console to the TV actually frees up the Xbox/Playstation. He can Pad it when I want the TV. Happy days.

It looks like he is talking about gamepad ideas.

Keyword: idea

Certainly, of the Wii U launch games, many developers are making use of Nintendo's GamePad

Why is it that when Nintendo refers to "experiences only available on Nintendo hardware" it doesn't specifically mean the pad, which is thus far the only thing that can't be done on the PS360 and indeed the main feather in its cap?

Even the original article, in the context you quoted, "exclusive experiences" doesn't automatically mean "exclusive games." It could mean nothing more than "Use the pad for something more than just a place to dump the inventory."

The keyword in both cases is 'hardware', if the gamepad alone was being refered to then why is the generic term hardware used? The gamepad is used by the author of the article as an example of how its been interpreted at launch, but as that's part of the quote from Nintendo it certainly doesn't limit it to that.

I would agree that the term experiences could mean a number of things, but for me if you combine exclusive experiences with the generic Nintendo hardware its pointing towards exclusivity if you want the full range of our help.

Well. I think it could mean both. But he used the word idea. You wouldn't use idea for the hardware specs. You would say. We will help the developer to push the hardware to the limited.

He said we help them with ideas. I think he means the gamepad.

Indeed. I think he talk about 5 player MP and the gamepad.

If I really wnated to play devils advocvate with this I could point out that ideas is used in a seperate statement, however ideas coiuld be taken in many contexts.

This for example with his comments being the answer to a theoretical question.

Q. A number of developers have hinted that potential bottlenecks exist within the WiiU's architecture, how do plan to support developers in this area?

A. It's a matter of how seriously they commit themselves. Our mission is to approach developers, and if they're willing to commit to experiences only available on Nintendo hardware, we are more willing to help. Each developer has his or her own ideas and we really encourage the differences.

His statement fit perfectly as an answer to that question, even the idea part (as different developers will always have different ideas of how to get around system limitations). Keep in mind that thsi is not exactly setting a precedent either, MS and in particular Sony have always been more forthcoming with assistance to devs that offer exclusivity (being it the full title or early DLC, etc). I simply believe that with Nintendo's track record of mishandling relationships with third party devs its a very risky move.

As such it can be taken a number of different ways, but I don't believe anything he said could be limited to one possible answer and my view is taken in the context that a number of developers have started to become vocal about bottlenecks in the architecture and Nintendo have been very secretive about the exact system specs with many suggesting lower clock speeds than the 360/Ps3 being an issue.

To my knowledge(I could be wrong of course), no, the Gamepad cannot be used to watch TV.

Now I know that the Miiverse is heavely moderated by Nintendo and that I can understand, but this does seem to be taking things a bit far:

"Dear customer," a Nintendo representative replied, "we would like to let you know that Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.

"We have thus decided to restrict the access to content which is unsuitable to minors (PEGI) to the 11pm - 3am time window."

Wow. Complete and utter nonsense. So glad I'm not interested in the Wii U. The normal Wii just might be the last Nintendo system I get if they keep this garbage up. Not going to pay a company that puts up ridiculous restrictions like this on their products.

It's only restricted in Europe right now as I understand it.

True, but I'm not supporting this kind of thing, regardless if it's happening where I live or not. No telling if they'll decide to spread this restriction to other areas. Hopefully, Nintendo will notice the backlash and drop it before they decide that people can't play their Wii U's past midnight.

TBH Nintendo it's not your fault if mothers are stupid enough to let their kids spray people's guts all over virtual walls.

I'm 15, I have no desire to play that kinda game anyway, but there is no need to do the timeframe thing...

Well, as a parent, life is busy and we all have things to do. The wiiU has been a great platform for the whole family to play together. I cannot, however, ALWAYS be present when they are playing games. With online content and communication becoming more integrated, it becomes harder and harder to monitor content suitable for my 3.5 year old, up to my 8 year old children. I choose the WiiU platform because of the lack of mature titles and Nintendo's general target audience of 10 and younger. There is plenty of gore on other platforms to satisfy the thirst.

The more censoring they can do on this platform the better. I would, however, like the ability to bypass that censoring should I want to, but for that....my bypass will remain PC/PS3/Xbox gaming.
