Wil you watch American Top Gear?

I'll come around and say that I'm excited for the show based on what I've seen and read with the guys on the various automotive websites. They're very excited about doing the show, and seem to have come together in a sort of way that will keep things interesting. I would suppose that, in my mind, if Jalopnik and Autoblog are giving it their seal of approval... That means something. I could care less if they've got a NASCAR guy on the show, this is Top Gear USA, and NASCAR is a part of our culture.

It isn't as though it is going to replace Top Gear UK here anyway. BBC America will still show that eleventy times a week, and we'll still be able to "acquire" new UK episodes when they come out. If Top Gear USA doesn't work out, the History Channel can go back to showing secret Nazi history pieces like they always do.

^ I thought it was the Porsche Panamera.

I thought so too. Shame, because it's the same car that Jeremy and the UK cast completely hated on...then you see the TopGear US ad with Rutledge Wood having a blast in the very same car...talk about cognitive dissonance...

My take: I will watch it before I make any real judgments. I found the eight minute preview to not be too bad, and we only really saw one part of one challenge and maybe a test drive. I felt like we really didn't get a chance to see their personalities or how the play off each other. Part of the issue with UK Top Gear is that everyone knows these three guys. They can joke about stuff that happened on the show in the past or what each likes and dislikes and the audience has seen them long enough to get it. You will need at least half of a full season to get that from new guys.

My current judgment is that this will either be a suitable alternative for those that don't get a BBC channel, but never quite as good as the original, like The Office, or this will be the worst piece of television in the history of television. But I won't know until I actually watch it.

TB
No cable = no watching, but I might catch it on Netflix.
I also wouldn't pass on the chance that someone on Justin.TV might have it. Or History will stream it themselves later.

Meh. Its been in development hell so long it probably won't be any good, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Can't fathom why it is on the History Channel, though.
While from the first attempts to make it to now has been many, many years it has not been one, long, stumbling development process. Someone would start on it and then drop it. Then someone else would buy it and start from scratch. This version has only been in development, if I remember correctly, 18-24 months, maybe less, which is normal for a new show.

I don't get why people are already hating on this show.
<glances at GT5 section> Have you seen how the rest of this place acts? Or the rest of the Internet? Sure, this site is maintained within a certain boundary of reasonableness, but there is no exception to prejudice complaints about mass media products. Heck, I've been guilty of it on certain movies. Granted, I was spot on for Transformers.

Also, the BBC is the largest broadcasting company in the World, so they have endless amounts of money to throw at Top Gear UK. Im sure the History Channel isn't lacking for fund's them selve's, but there nothing like the BBC. So in that aspect it won't be as good either.
And done in coordination with BBC Worldwide Productions (or whatever they are called). History is also part of the Discovery Channel group. If anyone has shown they have a budget to go all over the Planet Earth, it is them.

I just like how in the UK version they go to places you never really heard of. Interveiw people you never heard of. The UK version is just really unique, And i think the US version is gonna lack that.
I don't even know who their first guest is. They must be famous. And from what I have heard their test track actually contains some elevation changes, so I am kind of interested to see how adding that kind of weight shifting will affect these guest drivers.

Tanner Foust. Established racing driver. Legit reputation with car's. And opinionated himself (he is a racing driver)
Also, kind of funny. Does stuff with the Jackass guys on occasion and can be frigging nuts when he gets going (he performed a record car jump last New Year).

Rutledge Wood....Started off as an analyst for Nascar in 2008..And that's it.
He's a fat guy and has a history of working in car journalism. He is likely the most qualified for this job out of the hosts. The only other thing I know is that fat guys tend to either be funny or depressing. Funny is like a defense mechanism. But being fat does nothing to my opinion of what I expect from the show. This is my biggest question mark, as I only know his resume.

Adam Ferrera...Mediocre Comedian, who's done some movies, TV etc.
I liked some of his stand-up stuff and he does well when he is acting alongside Dennis Leary. They have a good onscreen thing going on. If he can maintain that with these hosts he should at least be golden. I do know he has talked about helping his dad work on cars as a kid. Otherwise it almost feels like he has little known automotive history nd was added to be the quick ad-libber, possibly offensive guy.

Well *tongue in cheek* seeing as that other Brit export that became that AWFUL unviewed tripe that is American Idol I'll probably give this a pass.
Good point. No good shows have translated over from the BBC to American television. I mean, what: The Office, Weakest Link, Big Brother, Anything by Simon Cowell, Planet Earth, Life. Just a bunch of poorly rated shows that had no success. [/sarcasm]

I'm going to watch it. And all the interviews I've seen with the guys are funny. I think they work really well together, which is all you need to make Top Gear. Yes, the real Top Gear is good, but it would suck if they all didn't get along as well as they did. From the interviews Rutledge, Adam, and Tanner seem to get along great. I think it'll be good as long as they don't try to be James, Jeremy, and Richard and just be themselves.

Watch this video, I love Tanner and Rutledge at the end. His laugh is awesome.

And from what I've seen, Adam is my favorite.

Histrory is owned by A&E Networks actually, they still have a nice sized budget considering they make like a millions Lifetime movies a year.

Hey, it can't be worse than American Pickers. God I hate that show!

Nothing can be that bad. American Pickers sucks and really it is a fat guy and and an annoying guy pimping people on their junk. They hardly ever give an explanation to what any of the stuff is either. Pawn Stars is so much better!

Oh. I was not aware of that. I was under the assumption that it had constantly been in development, but was going through a revolving door of staff.

I liked some of his stand-up stuff and he does well when he is acting alongside Dennis Leary.
Man, Dennis Leary would have been awesome.

It's actually not a rip off. It's just an Americanized version of the original that was created by the BBC. I believe the orginal hosts even had some say in it. It looks like there will be similar challenges and things, so, I'm interested in seeing it.

This time around Adam Corrolla is a producer, and was when NBC dropped it a few years back. He has stuck with it and was supposed to be a host on NBC. But at that time he was kind of between gigs. Now he has a podcast show going that is fairly popular (and pretty good from the one episode I listened to). At first he was supposed to host this version but decided to drop out and brought in Ferrara. It works well enough, Italian-American comedian with a side interest in cars. Basically, he is supposed to have the everyman POV.

I am curious how this will do because of what the original gets away with in terms of Clarkson. He offends at least one group every series. And in America that gets you in possible job ending trouble, unless that is how you built your reputation, like South Park, or you are Charlie Sheen. That guy could re-enact a GTA scene and still get great ratings on Two and a Half Men (a mystery in its own right).

I'd give it a try - if its anything like the Aus version, its going to be a bit disappointing. For example, because everything looks and feels the same set wise, one expects everything to be as slick. So when you see a dusty test track demarcated with old tyres and witches hats, the rolling of eyes is unavoidable.

I'm going to be watching it because i love cars and the crazy experiments they do with old ones.I just hope the American Version will be as good as the UK version.

Man, Dennis Leary would have been awesome.

Isn't he too busy doing F-Series commercials?

Watching the bios.. I'm actually excited about the show and can't wait to see it.

Haaa!

That would indeed be terrible, especially if they did it on their first episode.

Im looking forward to watching it, because it cant be THAT bad. Tanner had the supercars unleashed show on SPEED and that was mildly amusing sooooo.....

Not that big a deal. Top Gear U.K. occasionally loves American cars that most American journalists place at the bottom of whatever class they are competing in.

"Ok, this guy has some old oil can sign, and people collect those like crazy. So we're going to annoy the hell out of him until we can get a good price. If not, we can show up at some other random person's front door step asking if we can look through their old crap."

Every episode!!!!!!

Confirmed by Wikipedia, Fifth Gear was already two seasons in by the time new Top Gear started.

and that's just from watching the stupid commercial where the guy blatantly rips off the UK version by counting the mph as he's driving and at the end "167 miles per hour in a four door".

With the tone he said that with, and the way he said that...Was just..yeah.

Also, kind of funny. Does stuff with the Jackass guys on occasion and can be frigging nuts when he gets going (he performed a record car jump last New Year).

Your thinking of Travis Pastrana, Tanner Foust seems like a pretty dull dude to me. Pastrana would've been pretty Awesome on Top Gear US

Top Gear USA is for people who never heard or watched Top Gear International. If you have been a fan of the UK Top Gear, you will probably hate being American after watching the first episode of Top Gear USA. I know I will, and that's just from watching the stupid commercial where the guy blatantly rips off the UK version by counting the mph as he's driving and at the end "167 miles per hour in a four door". I googled it and it's a Maserati. I'd rather watch UK Top Gear any day of the week, but I will at least give the first episode a shot. If anything, it'll be good for a laugh as I compare every single second of it to its UK counterpart.

Saying how fast you're going was invented by TGUK?
And what difference does it make that he was driving a Maseratti?
Watching the show with the intention of not liking it is just about the stupidest thing a person could do. You actually admitted that you will watch it just to say it's bad; what the hell kind of logic is that?
I'm sorry, but you are the worst kind of person.

Why couldn't they show the BBC version of Top Gear on History channel instead? lol Half an hour to go. I think it's going to be cool, but also I'll probably just love to hate it. Well, everything except the cars :sly:

Your name. It is awesome. :)

I'm watching it right now and I'm one of the haters but so far it's kinda interesting. I like this Dodge test but I'm sure they're going to kill someone soon....

How reckless? No wonder they couldn't get any other state to allow it. Still entertaining now though, but I think the danger and chase is why.

Wow the first 10 minutes is beyond rough. Who in god's name did their camera work? It's horrid.

Its not that bad. It may not be the best, but it could be a lot worse. I've always been a fan of the challanges anyways on the real Top Gear, I'll wait for that.

That pilot is pretty amazing though.
