Now I know the AI in the other 2 games I play often, Forza 3 and GT5 are not very tough to beat, even on Hard, they seem ''dumbed'' down, but this game on easy(at least for me) is frustrating.

I enjoy the challenge but when I cannot even beat the ''C'' invitational on easy, I must really suck at this game.

Anyone else think SMS might have mistakenly made the difficulty settings as follows-

Easy really is Pro
Medium really is Beyond Awesome
Hard really is Godly

Same for me.
I'm trying to get Chris Rado's Scion TC but it's impossible. Even with a good tune, it's really difficult. I've been reading online and others are also having this problem. There are also some people that are saying that the game is easier than Shift 1.

I'm playing on medium. It's challenging, but not impossible. I really like it that way - one mistake and you're out. That's how it should be. Sometimes it's frustrating (wait till you get Modern A Invitational), but most of the time it just pushes you to race harder.

I'm trying to get Chris Rado's Scion TC but it's impossible.

The first two races in the series, I barely beat him with my B class GT-R V-spec. The secret is to get out in front of him, and drive perfectly. Being in front of him and not allowing him to pass seemed to limit his ability to set increasingly negative lap times.

The third race had so many long straight legs, that his car just simply was too fast for mine to compete with. I took a second place, and hoped for a better track for the final race.

No such luck in that race. I tried a bunch of times to get out in front of him, but it just didn't happen. He was constantly 4 seconds faster than me even when I hit a perfect circuit.

I switched cars to the Pagani I got from NFS Hot Pursuit (it's the only A class car I had), and after that, for whatever reason, Chris wasn't even competitive. The lead car was the driver with the same car I was driving, and Chris was in the 3rd or 4th spot for the whole race. So I took first, but I could have come in 3rd and still won the series.....

Who knows?

I've been playing on hard and found it quite easy. Most of the first races were like this..

You start in around 4th.

Lights go, 3, 2, 1, go..... Accelerate so hard that i instantly jump into first place from just mashing the throttle and then drive on hoping my graphics drivers dont crash until i win

Repeat to 60% at which point now i can barely do a lap before my graphics drivers give up on the game, and so i have given up on the game.

I'm loving the AI. It seems that after a few races with them being too easy, they stiffen right up over the next couple until I can't maintain first. I keep the difficulty on easy, so they're not interfering with my time for autolog, but I suppose the game easily detects that it's not enough when I start getting major points for 'leading' and 'long lead.'

Every few races they go wrong and hit me in a corner, but I've seen them dive out of my way, or opt to run into the grass rather than knock me off the road. They're nicer than any other racing AI that I've seen, and they're even nicer than most racers I've found on line. Mostly they're proper gentlemen.

I think I rather like the AI here. I think if I could here them apologize into the mic when they bump me, it'd be just like the best online racing I've had.

Folks.., you gotta remember that the AI in Shift is now "Adaptive". Yes.., it's certainly more challenging.., but not impossible to beat. I don't know why SMS/EA decided to use adaptive AI (especially considering if they did the research they'd know that it's one of those things the majority of gamers don't like).

One obvious and apparent problem with Adaptive AI is present in Shift-2. Even on the easy setting at times you'll often find that you're really competing against one car. It's often the lead car that takes off like a bat out of hell and you spend your time chasing down that car.

Adaptive AI has an unfair advantage. The vehicles have unrealistic braking distances, acceleration, and can corner at impossible speeds.

For me getting the Scion was very easy.

I find this game funner than GT5 in career mode, because it's more of a challenge. But, I also normally hate the idea of rubber banding. I despise that when I run a perfect race, I can never be out in front more than a half a second of the 2nd place car, but if I fall behind, the AI car can easily get 2 or more seconds in front of me in no time at all...

I would rather the AI adapt to the potential of my car, and let me out drive them if I can, vs. them doing unrealistic things to make it seem competitive. I don't like being out front for the whole race only to commit one small error on the last corner and losing the win because of it. :embarrassed:

I actually like the idea that I can't start a one make race and expect to be well in first place by half way through the first lap. It makes things far more realistic and far more enjoyable.

I'd rather lose by a second than win by a minute :). Kudos to the AI in this game.

I also love that they restrict you from using a massively over powered car unlike in GT5 where you could just go on easy mode with the X1.

It is a challenge, but that's what makes the game better !
The good thing with N4S series's is that if you upgrade your car, the AI do too !! So it's always even. Granted it could be dulled down a little, they are evil gits !! No end of times have I overtaken the leader, for him to get Monkey on and smash me off the circuit :yuck:

There is NO rubberbanding. The AI only adjusts after you finish a race. If you win - next race it drives better and gives you more challenge, if you lose, then it will drive less aggressive. I think the way they have implemented the system is very smart and cool, it always gives you a challenge, you never feel like you are too slow or too fast (most of the time anyway). It's always just about right.

If it's anything like chasing down the AE86, I'm going to have a headache going after Rado. I beat the Toyota in every event but the last, but probably wouldn't have won if he didn't get pitted into the wall at Enna & came 2nd to last. :ouch:

The AI in this game can be fun, but there's times where they seem to have no respect for you. You could make a clean pass on the inside and then end up pit maneuvered out of the way. :grumpy:

From my perspective, this is incorrect... :embarrassed:

I've built up huge leads that never seemed to diminish, so if there is rubber-banding, it's got to be somewhat subtle. No doubt the difficulty has adjusted to me, but I haven't seen anything like ungodly awesome brakes, or blatant disregard for the laws of time and space.

There may be a pinch of rubber-banding around, but if it's there it's not going about its business in the crude ways I'm used to seeing.

i'm loving the AI, makes you work for the win

Totally agree 100%. This game is everything I was hoping GT5 would be. Pack racing with aggressive AI that makes you work to win. Fun!

Also I dare anyone to drive about 10 laps on the Hazyview Figure 8 track and say they didn't have fun.

Perhaps what may be perceived as rubber-band is the AI's "will" to push on and go faster when needed? You know, just like people do :D

The AI does rubberband.., but it's not as severe as some other titles. It's not extremely heavy.., but it's there.

I think the biggest problem isn't the rubberband issue. It's the "cheating" coded into the adaptive set up that gives the AI the advantage. I am all for a good challenging race.., but it's very obvious the AI has a big advantage with the ability to corner, accelerate, and in some cases brake unrealistically.

I will say that it's great the aggressiveness is toned down. I don't get rammed off the road, pitted, ect nearly as much as I have in the first Shift. One thing I'm very happy to see NOT carried over with the AI is the ungodly braking distances from Shift-1

I can't count the number of races in Shift-1 where going into a turn and an AI car goes flying by you at 100+ mph and manages to come to a near dead stop within a 10 foot distance. This really got annoying when they would do this (timed out perfectly) for it to happen in front of your car.., resulting in an avoidable impact.

There is no rubber banding. The game matches you up with equally competitive cars, that's why they're always on your tail.

Sometimes I can get a 5 second lead and it stays that way. One race I wrecked and reset before the field caught me. I love when they hit the brakes as your ghost resets in front of them lol.

It may seem like they rubber band when you get a ways out because many drivers relax when they have a lead. You don't push it so hard and suddenly 2nd place is on your a**.

Edit: Also, a lot of drivers take corners with more caution while leading... another way to let the pack catch you.

Yes, i too find the AI really great and challenging. I haven't been concentrating so hard just to stay in front (if i can get in front) since shift1..
