X1 Prototype- WOW!

Yep although an additional gas-turbine would add weight I reckon but then again something has to power that fan I guess.
It's not just Vettel visibly changing gears though that suggests a manual transmission but in the new video you can also clearly hear gearchanges being made unlike a CVT.

Jay has pointed out that the fan produces 1000kg of downforce which is the same as the aero alone at approx 200mph, something powerful is spinning it! I should also point out that it was TheCracker who suggested it could have 2 engines. I love the fact the PD's news article is titled "X1 Prototype Full Reveal" but we still find something to ponder  Unfortunately I've got no sound in work so haven't been able to hear it yet :(

Maybe there's a Webber version with an inferior front wing as well or without a special "don't push Button" push button.;)

It also connects via wireless with Vettel's X1, when Webber chooses to conserve fuel It boosts Vettel's Performance.

The unfortunate side effect it has is that Vettel's X1 can suddenly veer sharp right.

There's another possible difference too, apparantly the Vettel version is equipped with a special electro-magnetic system and sensors detecting a pacecar to automatically keep the appropriate distance whilst the Webber version is still controllable whilst airborne.;)

It looks like it's an indication of time of day rather than weather....unless the other icon is a big snow ball!

That's the Earth's moon dude.

The universal icon for snow usually is a snowflake.

That's why John Parry said it's an indication of time and day rather than weather as it is obviously a moon then he made a joke that it could be a big snowball which has now been ruined!

More than likely it has a Micro Turbine Engine setup which is very light and extremely powerful. The first one that got really noticed was developed for this little wonder. You may remember it from the James Bond movie. Here are some specs to look at so you can get an idea. If the X-1’s Turbine Engine has design similar to the one in this jet it wouldn’t be more than 400lbs at the most.

I'd like to note that F1 cars in the '80 turbo era obtained in qualifications trim about 1200-1300 bhp from 1.5 liter engines, reaching about 800bhp/liter of specific power. To be honest, the X1 engine doesn't seem all that impressive compared to them.

I wonder if we will be able to fit bigger turbos to the X1 in order to achieve the same specific power and specific torque levels. 3.0 liters at 800 bhp/liter would mean 2400 hp!

Yeah, but I'm betting the one in the X1 would be more driveable and reliable.

Can it not be both? I've seen clear weather at night represented with a moon; rain with a crescent moon hidden behind the clouds etc. It is more likely to be time of day in arcade mode, though.

It's odd to see that races on the same circuit at different times of day are separated there, rather than simply being given the opportunity to set the time ourselves, e.g. via a slider.

1500 bhp from 3 litres is still going to be a lag fest, and the Turbo F1 cars rarely (if ever) ran at that level in the race (qualifying trim was good for 5 laps only, including in and out laps!)
Maybe we could tune it further, but it ought to self destruct in a realistic manner as a result :P

So you’re telling me that the Chaparral and the X-1 don’t have some type of turbine engine. Are you sure very sure? So if you’re right they both have a some what of a standard engine linked to a two drive transmission, 1 out put shaft controlling the transmission and the other the fan. Now I would think that the stress levels on that type of set up would pull the car apart.

And this bike that clearly has a turbine engine linked to a transmission.

Are you sure on you thoughts? I don't think so myself.

That's exactly right, it has a helicopter turbine engine driving the rear wheel through a 2 speed transmission and does 0-200mph in 5.4 seconds which is 0.5 seconds faster than the X1, I was just posting to show the acceleration figures are achievable in real life even though they are almost unbelievable. You'll see from my comments on the previous page I think the X1 will have a separate turbine engine for the fan :)

Maybe some variations are hold-overs from GT4 and haven't been fully updated?

...

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how four-wheel drive works. A CVT could be placed on the fan's power take-off train, to make best use of rpm and available power, but the fluctuations would make cornering "interesting" to say the least.

However, the Brabham fan car (BT46, was it?) used the motor (via a clutch system) to power the fan, and that apparently was great fun in being able to get more grip by accelerating into the corner... :dopey:

The Chapparel 2J had a two-stroke engine driving its pair of fans, and I admit that a second engine would be better than trying to drive off the existing one.
In most racing formulas, the engine count is limited to one. Yet another reason to take advantage of the (lack of) rules. :P

That said, it's still odd that the footage of Vettel driving (in real time) in the video sounds completely different to the lap at the end, and is mostly transmission whine (or something similar...)

I'm pretty sure the snow ball suggestion was a joke!

Nurse! The humour bypass has worked. Now we just need to reverse it.

:dopey:
Sorry people, my fault!

I thought it was obvious that I was joking due the snowball suggestion being completely bloody stupid but just typing up a few words online can be quite crude and often the meaning is lost.

Although I was joking when I suggested it I recalled reading that Sebastian Vettel was interested in the WRC and I remembered seeing this photo last year which to me at least looks suspiciously like spectators returning a prototype rally car to the road in Sweden.

Remember, nothing is confirmed so far, it's all just rumours at the moment but I am beginning to suspect that maybe the icon is actually a snowball.

I have looked into the rumours though and the earliest mention of the whole snowball incident seems to originate at this place so make of that what you will.
