My new Fibre optic package coming from an EE rented BT line!

Also, I may as well post this here instead of making a new thread.

This is from my laptop which is connected to an 8 port switch which also has my PS3 and a few other things connected to it and they all get roughly the same speed. However, at my PC, where the line comes into the house, I only get about 20Mbps to the same server (Maidenhead). I know it shouldn't matter but the specs of my laptop are 4GB RAM, 2.0 GHz dual core, and 512MB Graphics and the PC is 512MB RAM, 2.2GHz single core and 512MB graphics.

So my question is, why am I getting lower speeds on my PC than my laptop. If you need any more information, please ask. :)

Your PS3 is not correct on the speed test I will let you know that right now. The speed test in the network settings never is correct.

Are you using windows 7 on the pc? and what about a PCI network card?

Anyway i remember a friend of mine who had similar problems, and he had a play around with some of the adapter settings for the Ethernet controller, i think it's more commonly known as "changing the NIC speed" but before you do best to check online for a few pointers or whether that could be the fix and in the meantime i'll drop my friend an email too.

No, I'm using Windows XP 2002 on the PC. Yes there is a PCI network card inside the motherboard. I will try fiddling with the adapter settings over the next few days to see if I can get any results. Thank you for the reply.

your welcome, still no reply from my friend though.

Anybody here reside in Japan, because I am jelly now to those who can subscribe to Sony's Nuro Ultra High Speed service :

Sony Launches World’s Fastest Internet Service, Boasts Download Speeds of 2 Gbps

Sony Corporation announced yesterday that its own Internet service provider So-net Entertainment has launched what is thought to be the world’s fastest Internet connection for home use, with download speeds clocking in at a massive 2 Gbps, on average twice as fast as competing high-speed fibre connections in Japan.

Targeting individual homes and apartment buildings of two floors or fewer, the ultra-fast connection, known as Nuro, will cost a not unreasonable 4,980 yen (US$51) per calendar month, offering download speeds of 2 Gbps and uploads of up to 1 Gbps. That, boys and girls, is blazingly fast.

Got an email from Virgin this morning saying my speed has been increased, which I found surprising since I was told not long ago that it wouldn't happen for another couple of months. So I was expecting it to double to 20Mb/s, but instead they said it would be 30Mb/s.

Granted, they did double the upload speed (although it still isn't great even now). But tripling the download makes up for that.

I'm currently downloading a torrent at 720kb/s  I have never ever in my entire life seen a higher speed than ~150kb/s at home. WTF, witchcraft.

This is what happens when the company you're paying for 60mb/s provides a piece of 🤬 for a router. :I

This is higher than it was yesterday.

They probably gave you a $15 router.

Here's mine after my ISP decided to upgrade all of their customers under 25mbps for free since they are dropping all of the slower speeds.

I need to sort the network out so I get these speeds everywhere in the house...

Tested the connection a few times today to see the best result I could get. It's only slightly faster than it was when I last posted here, but the upload still sucks:

Since I can't use Speedtest.net because I'm on the worst browser ever, I'll just use the figures that the PS3 gave me.

Back here in my room I get :
Download - 16.3Mbps
Upload - 4.8Mbps

On my dad's PC, his speeds are faster. He gets like 25MBps Download but then again, he's not using WiFi.

The PS3 can't determine speeds properly at all. My PS3 & laptop are the same distance away from the router but my PS3 DL is 15Mbps while my laptop's is 25Mbps. So unless my PS3 is connecting to Japan for the test it's dead wrong.

Wired or wireless shouldn't effect speed since the router (if it's not a cheap one) runs at speeds way faster than your internet connect. (my router has a speed of 300Mbps) The ping is what's effected.

Are you sure that wired/wireless don't make a difference? My PS3 downloads are way faster when I hook it up to the modem.

Also, the reason that your PS3 is slower could be because it doesn't have a wireless-N capable connecter. (I think it only supports B/G)
Your laptop and modem are probably using a wireless-N network so it's faster. I'm not 100% sure, though. :dunce:
