I've been having to deal with a sore jaw while trying to recover from the dental work I got on Thursday. I've been thinking along the way. It's time I offer a little "John-alysis" on this Ferrari deal. Get ready for another long post of my own perssonal comments.
(1) - PASSIONATE VIEW ON FERRARIS FINALLY BEING INCLUDED
Since joining GTPlanet in early December 2003, I've been looking for a long while to see GT4 being developed. I've seen all kinds of ideas mentioned ranging from online play to the inclusion of the three long-debated companies. I've read everything from "PD doesn't want anything faster than Skylines" to all kinds of hullaballoo concerning not being a supercar game. Some of the more "fanboyish" claims on GT4 vs. Forza was that Forza had real sports cars while GT was apparentely too slow for everyone else's standards. My claim in the past has been that world-renowned companies have existed since Gran Turismo 1. Just not as many. GT2 turned up the heat on including as many car companies as possible. GT3 saw most of the same companies in, just not with as many cars. GT4 was basicaly a world of cars with the debut of Spanish, Swedish, Korean, and even Dutch cars. People still think the Italian and German lineups were incomplete in GT4... until now. The Prancing Horse almost everyone loves (I'm a Ferrari fan myself) will be in GTHD and even GT5. To make matters better, PD and Ferrari are told to undergo some sort of negotiating and marketing deal. This inclusion is huge for PD because it will give the brand-crazy people something to shut up and enjoy. I've always appreciated a world of cars. That almost always comes first before any big-name car companies. The only true negative to PD getting Ferrari is that most other games and game companies have Ferraris and such included. Having said this, is it possible for PD to deliver a wonderful game even while most others had Ferrari? How many people (mainstream and underground) do you see go around in Forza discussions talking about their Honda Civics or Nissan Skylines? Note I said FORZA. The answer- hardly any. Why? It's because Forza has been seen more as a real sports car fan's game. The daily drivers are still there, but not with the diversity GT4 provided. The diversity will be enhanced as Ferrari makes its Gran Turismo debut. Now that PD has some Ferrari love, they need to capitalize and make sure that they have PLENTY to offer for its fans. That includes everyone from the easily impressed to the obsessively ungrateful. Let's see how many complainers will come when GTHD and GT5 will have full-song Ferraris.
(2) - RECAP OF MY PAST VIEWS ON FERRARI BEFORE GTHD
My issue was always about the satisfaction issue of Ferraris in a game series like the Gran Turismo series. Has GT been a good series without Ferrari? Sure. Every GT has been a Greatest Hit not because certain car companies are in, but because the game still remains fun and well-enjoyed. I said I was still a GT guy even when Enthusia entered my PS2 game library. I admitted that Enthusia delivered that sort of sneak attack on me. This game had the [Dauer] Bugatti EB110, which is one of the bigtime cars most supercar types crave. Even this game featured the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. This love-it-or-hate-it supercar is also a bigtime sports car. Yet still, it gets tossed to the wayside by people wanting Ferraris and stuff. Almost every sports car and supercar-related issue I've addressed concerning GT games has earned me some compliments, hateful comments, drawn-out arguments that gets nowhere in a hurry, and even the loss of my "Quality Posts" badge. I still managed to deliver some like-it-or-not comments regardless of what anyone thought. I don't know how many conversations I've gotten into in which I just can't seem to get some people to understand my views on Ferrari and the GT series. It's like trying to win a battle that never ends or gets settled. I stayed on with my points because I thought people really doubted what the GT series was really about. I'm exceptionally proud to see Ferrari in GTHD with perhaps many more to come. All the while, I've never hated Ferrari. I love Ferrari. My problem has just been the supercar obsession, like the 500-600 other types of cars in GT4 were insignificant.
(3) - GTHD AND GT5 IS NO DIFFERENT EVEN WITHOUT FERRARI
Don't make this the primary reason to care about GT5 and GTHD. I always say that gameplay is more important than most of the nit-picky issues people always like to instill in our minds about this game's inclusion of Ferrari at long last. Car companies will come and go in a game like Gran Turismo. The thing people put on this game series is that it's not a real car fan's game, which is a complete lie. It's like I say- don't let the mainstream types tell you off. All these stereotypes and myths shouldn't be believed. Perhaps the reason why I haven't been so happy-go-lucky with these such cars and car companies is because I don't think about them 24/7, nor do I think they are what real racing games are made of. Racing games are made of... RACING. Didn't the go-kart racing in "ToCA Race Driver 3" and Global GT Lights (I love those cars! About as much as the Palmer Jaguar JP1 cars) teach you that you can go fast in anything? Part of my beef with some people has been about people thinking the GT series is too slow. Hell. What about riding in a Pescarolo doing 180+ on the Hunadieres of Le Mans? If GT was THAT slow, then maybe the game should be exclusive to Kei cars so that EVERYONE can complain to the high heavens. There's just that sort of greed issue people put onto this issue and wished this wasn't as critical of an issue. But what can I do about it? I'm a PS2 gamer like most other people in my age range. I just wish that my opinion would be as valued as the next "no Ferrari, no GT game" complainer.
(4) - HOW DOES PD COMBAT THE "CARS YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO DRIVE" COMMENT (Forza Motorsport, EGM), AND CAN GTHD AND GT5 ACTUALLY CHANGE UP THE FORMULA SO THAT IT'S NOT A CONSIDERABLE FACTOR IN ITS JUDGING?
Part of the negatives of listening to the public and mainstream is that you have to take in every comment from the most true comments to the utterly ludicrous. Well, this is no different. It's only "cars you actually want to drive" because people think Polyphony Digital is too lazy or inconsiderate in picking up Ferrari and such. Let me go back to the GT4 online chat with GT4 producer, Taku Imasaki. Here is the response GTPlanet's own (and one of my good buddies) cobragt asked Taku-san about why there is no Ferrari:
"When you don't see a car in GT, it's either 1. doesn't make sense financially 2.other game companies have exclusive rights to it 3. we didn't have enough assets to create it within our time constraints --- we know you wanted the game in your hands!"
So is PD actually THAT lazy? GT4 locked up Bentley. Tourist Trophy locked up freaking Ducati and Aprilia. Sports cars are in the game. Damn it to hell, USE THEM! It's been my primary complaint with people knocking the game series. It's almost as if PD has to deal with certain ingrates who can't be satisfied with any game that doesn't feature big-name sports car companies is of no interest. Maybe it's why people preferred something like "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" over something like GT4 or Enthusia- at least big name car companies can be found unlike the two I mentioned (according to some people). It's where you can proudly speedfreak an Enzo and crush anything that doesn't come from the big three of the supercar realm. It's my primary criticism- people are hard to satisfy sometimes, especially in the realm of Gran Turismo. Some people have been total ingrates. It's one of the deals I just can't seem to understand with some people. Is there enough sports cars? Is there NOT enough sports cars? How many will make you happy so that we can stop all this bullcrap about the deficiency of enough sports cars in a Gran Turismo game? Can we actually stop the pain? Is there a vaccine for this? Is Ferrari enough? The stereotype that GT is a Skyline and Kei heaven should be avoided. You finally have a chance to race Ferraris so that you can enjoy pure sports cars. It's why I say that only pure car fans should be the ones looking for Ferraris except the cheap thrills crowd. Real car people appreciate "Lam Por Ferra" while non automotive purists just want the fastest cars possible since life seems to be short for anything that isn't a "Lam Por Ferra."
Other than this, welcome to GT, Ferrari! ^_^ By the way, I don't think a lot of Ferrari fans would like GT5 to have just the Ferraris you shown, condraz23. The reoccuring fear is that people would feel like what happens to Ferrari's inclusion in GT5 could be like the only Marcos in GT4. Sort of a premonition. You're always free to share your mind. About as much as I shared ALL of my mind on this post!
