PS3 General Discussion

well then it's off to Monoprice to buy '50 of Ethernet ::grumbles::

Is your computer closer to you than the router? You can hook it up there and piggyback off of it's wireless connection, I believe.

Computer is at same location as router in my bedroom. If I'm lucky I will be able to run the cable into the room that is underneath my PS3 and go up through the floor where there is a power outlet already. That would halve the amount of cable I need. I would just put the router upstairs and run my desktop wireless but I'm strapped for power outlets and there isn't a phone line in a convenient location. :(

You could try HomePlug (ethernet over power cable) or equivalent. If you run it via a 6 gang extension you'll probably lose some bandwidth but it's usually still higher than your Internet connection speed anyway.

Just an idea which can save on cabling, but will probably cost you €80 or so.

You can buy the cable he needs for under $20 at Monoprice.

what is homeplug? 80 euros is over $100 so it's much more expensive than the cabling.
It runs your internet network through your power lines. So you plug the Homeplug device into an outlet near your router/modem and connect it and then the other homeplug device in an outlet near whatever device you need to hook up online (PS3) and hook it into the homeplug device. The signal travels over your electrical wiring.

The premium price is only worth it if you find cables to be that problematic and wireless won't work well for your situation.

Just a heads-up: Ad Hoc Party is available over in the PlayStation store, in the PSP add-ons section. Had gobs of fun in GT PSP once the group managed to get everyone in without someone dropping out.

Quite so. So, if you're living in rented accommodation where drilling holes isn't allowed, or you've got concrete floors and drilling is a pain or some such thing it's quite useful. Otherwise it's much better to spend €5 on a UTP cable.

For me it's just a handy way to be able to access my network from anywhere in the house as I don't want to cable the whole house and my wireless network is a bit feeble on the top floors.

So, sorry, my post was more aimed at making others aware of another option than for the OP of the question, although I wasn't sure how easy it was for him to lay the cable.

It's good information to share. I looked into it myself at one point and just decided the cost didn't outweigh the inconvenience.

Well the UK now has a video store, so I take a look at it last night and to begin with I was reasonably impressed with it, a good selection of films and while I would not buy a film as a down load, rental was a tempting thought.

That was until I looked a little closer and noticed that every single film (even the HD ones) all have 2 channel audio.

I'm sorry but what kind of utterly daft and short-sighted move is that, because I'm not going to rent a HD film and then have to use DTS Neo or Dolby Pro-logic to fake surround sound.

I can buy a DVD for around a pound more than Sony want for renting an older title, and not only will I own it, but I will have DD/DTS audio and I can then sell it on if I don't want to keep it.

Even the slightly higher charge of renting a BR release is worth it to get HD audio.

Sorry Sony, I didn't spend time and money getting a home cinema capable of handling every HD audio format around to then feed it a crappy 2 channel audio track for films I know offer more.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Scaff

There are many issues with the video store. The DRM (at least in America) is also ludicrous.

Part of me wonders how much of that is tied to the fact that Sony is tied to the Blu-Ray success as well. Blu-Ray is better, but for those without the Blu-Ray cash they can just use the PSN video store.

Of course, even that argument fails in light of the price wars going on with retailers right now. Up SD version is $19.99 on the US video store. For $19.99 I got Up on Blu-Ray, with a full disc of special features, a DVD copy of the movie, and a digital copy.

Sony's PSN store has been reluctant to attempt price parity during a price war, and for people like me that are looking for maximum value it becomes painfully obvious digital distribution is still distant. But their main customers are likely the folks that have signed on to digital distribution 100%, think Netflix streaming in HD is equal to Blu-Ray, and can't tell a difference (or blindly ignore its existence) between simulated surround sound and true surround sound.

But I think this shows a huge hole in the current design of digital distribution systems: a virtual marketplace for entertainment media that is sold on a proprietary system (or even only a couple) has no competition.

I don't know what happened but my controller won't work wireless. If I take the USB out all the lights flash and I can't get it to go back no matter what until I put the USB back in(Yes, I know you press the PS button). It is fully charged and worked fine before the update.:nervous:

Any ideas?

edit: After a 4th restart it seems to be working again.

That exact same thing happened to me last night while trying to play GTA4 O.o

So it wasn't just you, as I had installed 3.10 also...

For future reference, there's a little recessed button on the back of the controller that you can push with a straightened paperclip or pen that resets the controller.

Yup, after installing the new 3.10 update to my slim I had the same controller problem.

Even after resetting the controller to default I still had to reboot the PS3 in order for the controller to work with out the USB cord attached.
The same day of installing the last update 3.01 (fat 40 gig) my blu ray stopped working during my first MW2 campaign match. :ouch:
I hope these latest and future updates aren't the cause of more problems.

What the hell is going on these days with video gaming? Can none of these companies get it correct?

It may be time to spend my money elsewhere, on something more reliable like the stock market.

I'm actually worried to boot the PS3 again. :nervous:

EDIT: Did I read about a class action lawsuit somewhere?

So, I've got somebody elses PS3 (80GB of some sort, haven't really bothered looking into the exact spec otherwise), and it appears to have a broken Blu-Ray drive. Pretty certain it is out of warranty (owner just let it sit there, dead, for a good six months at least before she let me have a look at it). Anyway, it had a Rock Band disc in when I got it, and it would show up in the XMB, but when it tried launching it, it would come back to the XMB and have an error message saying "Operation could not be completed" (I think). After removing the disc, doing the laser calibration by holding the eject button for 15 seconds, reformatting via recovery menu...It has no sign that a disc is even inserted, besides the blue LED.

So, dead drive correct? Is there a way to fix that yourself? Quick google search says that the drives are married to the motherboard and replacing one won't let it play games. Is this true? Anyone done it?

I can confirm that replacing the drive with one that you know works will not work, that seems to be the only component that is matched to the PS3. If you can find a unit that won't turn on or another problem (besides the motherboard or bluray drive obviously) you can pick it up cheap and do a Frankenstein.

EDIT: it is worth taking it apart, one thing I learned is that unless the connection to the drive is absolutely perfect it will act strangely. So if the system received a jolt of some sort if could have knocked one of the ribbons loose (never heard of this happening though)

I did a little research about replacing the blu-ray device in the PS3.
I understood that the device can be replaced by yourself.
Maybe the board your talking about is the one you need to remove and reuse.

Here is a video about replacing the blu-ray.
Here is a link if the video is not embedded correctly.

What are Sony upto? Has anyone seen the latest PSP advert on TV? I caught it on Sky the other night, and I was surprised to see that instead of promoting the recently released PSP GO, they were instead using the older version. On top of that , there was no mention at all of GT Mobile! I find that very puzzling.

One other thing, I cannot for the life of me, understand why Sony deicded to release a playable demo of LBP six months AFTER the ganme weas released, what was that all about?

I don't see the EU ads, so I can't comment on what you saw, but the US ads all show PSP and PSP Gos, as both units are still for sale. And I saw the US GT Mobile ad only about a week ago, although lately LBP: Game of the Year Edition and LBP on the PSP have been heavily advertised, as they recently launched as well.

I also think the LBP demo I saw was for the PSP, unless I missed one. Even then, it would actually be a full year after, but just in time for the GOTY edition.

If the EU branch of Sony is focusing more on PSP it may have to do with the rumors of certain retailers refusing to carry the Go. Or was that in Australia? Whichever, the price combined with a system that only allowed purchases directly from Sony supposedly had a few retailers angry.

Ive heard retailers here aren't very keen to have the new PSP Go, as they wont be able to generate game sales for it since they are by download. So they only stock the PSP which in turn keeps customers coming back to purchase their games.
One of the EB stores here in Brisbane didnt even know that the PSP Go had just been released let alone have any in stock on release day.

Anyone have any thoughts on Java's PS3 Media Server? I've been playing around with it for a little bit now and I'm having issues with getting it to see the PS3. Any other suggestions for linking my PC to my PS3 to stream media? The built it software sort of works but it doesn't like to stream some media files which is annoying.

Yet, in the US they have already figured out how to sell you a PSN game, put it on your account, and load it on to your Go for you. It is in testing now. Or they sell you vouchers (Amazon does it already).

In business you have to know how to take advantage of every dumb customer in a way that pleases them, not sit around and pout that the changing market will steal your business.

For Linux I've used MediaTomb, for Windows SimpleCenter. Both work fairly well (haven't used SimpleCenter for a while). Obviously the Linux one is free but Simple Center has a "free" version too.
