Aah, Magic Lap looks like fun this week. Too bad I never get the chance to race on Fridays. I'll be there in spirit, driving an invisible GNX (the only Buick in the last 30 years worth driving, IMO).

Start slow, Be smooth, Steadily pick it up

I have a friend that was awesome fast with the ds3. He went out got himself a good wheel. I warned him that he was going to be slower at first and that it could take him a couple weeks to be comfortable with it and get fast. He took it back for a refund after half hour of using it :boggled: True story.

I went back and did all the license tests and special events to help get used to it.

I started a brand new GT5 playthrough when I got my wheel–as much out of desire as necessity. Learning how to drive again starting with the slow little FF cars helped a lot, as did the license tests, etc.

I read all the warnings that it would take a long time to get used to it, but honestly, I fell into it pretty well after about a half dozen races. I raced with SNAIL the first week after getting it and did pretty well. Thankfully my wife was out of town a couple of days that week so I had an inordinate amount of time to practice with it.

One trick: never turn the wheel much past 90˚ when racing or you'll just burn the front tires or spin out. Turning the wheel past that point isn't going to turn the car any faster, anyway.

I don't remember much about transitioning to the wheel. I first started using a wheel back when I was playing GT3 (Time sure flies).

However I do remember learning to drive with manual transmission, and what helped me the most in that was doing the licence tests (that was in GT4).

I agree with Ap. Doing the license tests and early races will definitely help you get used to it, as you break the technique into small pieces where you can set goals and see your results.

Don't feel like you need to race with the wheel on Sundays until you are really comfortable with it. Practice with the wheel some, but race with the controller until you think you can handle the wheel. You'll get better pretty quick and at some point you'll wonder how it ever seemed that hard. :)

One thing that the wheel quickly shows you is how much drift or slide recovery you were doing (consciously or subconsciously) with the DS3. It is much more difficult to drift with the wheel than the DS3. I still whip out the DS3 for the drift seasonals.

Therefore, one thing to be careful of when you start with the wheel is keeping your tires planted. If you start to slide or spin even just a touch when you're learning the wheel you'll likely be hosed…just another reason to start with the low powered cars.

I am not going to be able to make it home in time to open up the practice room.
Please , if anybody has a grade a connection , can you please open the practice room in an open lobby and use GTP No Tuning Allowed for the room title .

Tonight will be a great opportunity to try out the new tire scale in a race environment. Especially the Ferrari 458 since it'll be on two tire grades less than what we had them one last week. See you guys in a few.

Oh boy. The ol' switching to a wheel ordeal! Let me tell you! My first wheel was a Logitech momo wheel, which was a snap to use. But, its only 270 degrees, so it wasnt hard to transition, since the steering input was so quick, countersteereing was a easy. Drifting I think was even easier then with the DS3. Then, after years of abuse, it finally gave up the ghost. So I moved on to bigger and better, a g27! I sucked for a solid month before I started to finally get use to it. Like AP said, I was having serious issues with countersteer. I was so used to a quick correction, I had no idea just how bad I got used to that crutch. But over time and a lot of practice, I finally managed to get it in check. Again, like AP said, the key is to keep your turn in on the wheel to a minimum. During a race, I never have to lift a hand and "walk" the wheel around. Both hands stay planted, unless Im shifting. Drifting was nearly impossible for about 4 months for me, and so was rally, but even that over time and practice began to get easier. Now I can rally as good, well, better, then ever, and my drifting has come a very long way, though still not on par with what I was able to do. Just keep practicing with it. Get into those lobbies and practice rooms and keep at it, the pay off will show in your lap times for sure.

Sorry I haven't been able to compete and do the qualifying session, my new G27 took a crap the 3rd day. So Logitech is sending me a new one which should be here by Friday.

Hey Jahgee1124,

Glad you want to race in S.N.A.I.L.! Just let us know when you can and can't race, that way the race directors will be prepared 👍

We run a clean league by enforcing the S.N.A.I.L. OLR and we expect all of our drivers to know and follow The Good Racecraft Guide. Please become versed in both.

Steps:
1. I add you to the drivers list as a New S.N.A.I.L. (Done)
2. You run the Time Trial.
3. You Private Message my GTPlanet account with your time from the time trial. N.B. You will not be able to race Sundays without submitting your time.
4. I assign you to the appropriate Division, giving you the best racing possible.
5. A PSN friend request will be sent from the appropriate SNAIL_Division1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 account. That is where you race on Sunday night.
6. You drive fast and clean on Sunday :)

The original post has a lot of information regarding the league, commit it to memory ;)

The second post has the current race lineup and is updated weekly.

If you have a preference for car/wheel colour and racing number, post your choices in this thread. To avoid duplication, the currently claimed combinations can be found here.

During the week we run a number of different events feel free to jump in and partake!

Welcome aboard and enjoy :)

Most nights are not good during the school year, but during the summer I can get on sometimes, I probably will go on the Lost S.N.A.I.L.S list often. I will do the time trial tomorrow.

Actually, It would be best if I put you in the Associate S.N.A.I.L. section, lost S.N.A.I.L.s don't respond to my pm's anymore :(

Run the time trial, so when you can race, and there's room, we can get you in the right place 👍

That's great news Shigegaki 👍 Looking forward to getting you in some races :)

OK, tomorrow will be my time trial day

Good racing at practice last night.

The "pylon" in the middle of the track in Race 1 really hammered me. I was looking in my rear view mirror and hit the car that was lagging out / stuck dead on. At least I wasn't texting while driving!

It looked like there were a fair number of shortcut penalties at Laguna Seca. Was there a part of the track that was marked strangely, like the chicanes on the Mulsanne Straight at Saarthe?

I've heard good things about you lot :) Count me in!

I'll submit a time for the TT a little later.

Edit: I'll use the GTP_pilmat account , if it makes any difference...

Hey pilmat,

We're going to have to do something about these people spreading these vicious rumours ;) Seriously, glad you're joining up 👍

Yes, good practice indeed. Anyone who missed last night, please be sure you spend some time in the Ferrari 458 Italia since it is on Sports Softs now. The brake points and throttle inputs are way different from last week when it was on Racing Mediums. I think everyone at practice enjoyed the new tires much more, but you definitely won't be able to drive the car the same. I just don't want anyone to be surprised on Sunday night. :)

Yeah, I slammed into him hard as well. Was trying to draft another car so I couldn't see that NSX sitting there on the track. When the car I was drafting swerved out of the way, it was too late for me. I took damage, spun, and got a collision penalty too. :dunce:

I guess I missed all of that because I didn't notice anyone getting shortcut penalties last night. That being said, I have always viewed Laguna Seca as having fair and accurate penalty boundaries. In other words, if you get a shortcut penalty there, you knew it was coming. Know what I mean?

Yup. I avoided them, but saw a fair number of cars who looked shortcut or collision ghosted...

Yes, I was braking even earlier for turn one and the speeds were a little lower for the rest as well, I definitely need to practice more with it.

I know I got one on the exit of the corkscrew....but that because I ran wide at the first part so it was expected :dunce:

Division is set (D3, and friend is accepted for lounge), cars are bought and Bob is breakin' 'em in! Just working out colors (likely white-ish with orange wheels), but number is 42.

See you all on Sunday night!

Sorry, but 42 is taken (by me). Good choice though ;)

Excellent 👍

Just to do a little S.N.A.I.L. advertising, have you seen these events a couple of our S.N.A.I.L. members run? Good fun :)

SNAIL Tuner and Team Series, race as a team in a tuned car.

S.P.E.C. Racing a little enduro racing.

We are allowing the same number to be chosen so long as the players are not in the same division. If they do end up in the same division, the player who has raced in S.N.A.I.L. longer gets priority with the chosen number. Also, please note that zer05ive (also in D3) has white with red wheels so make sure the orange doesn't clash with that so there is no confusion on the track :)

I also notice after going through the list and my GT5 colours, we have four dark greens. While I am flattered that my first choice is the most popular, I may change colours since I'm not a fan of having that many and Goat has raced more Sundays than I have.
