ok...I ran a few laps last evening, and have some info. I thought I might take the lead, and maybe give you two a run for the money. As it turns out, I'm already running slower with these times. I'm also in the midst of breaking in a new controller (after using my previous one for almost a year).

Here's the story...

Tuscan Speed six...149,980

1'11.631 . I'm going to rework this one, as I have a few other ideas for cornering approach. It had some serious tail happy movement.

Toyota Supra RZ...149,100

1'12.259 . This one could have a chance at moving into the 1'10 range, but not if I'm the one behind the wheel.

Nissan 300Zx 2 seater....149,900

1'13.064. This one surprised me as I was very stubborn in the corners, and the acceleration was slower than you would think.

MR2 GT-S....149,930

1'12.159. This was the surprise of the group. It stuck corners, and really had more acceleration than the Supra, and the Nissan. I attribute the time drop to the new controller, and the sudden change in steering response from driving three FR cars, to a very small lightweight MR car.

Since Meme has reset the bar at 1'10, I'll consider a new approach, and see what I can develop from teh MR2 and the Tuscan. I have a full breakdown of all the part costs, and total price tags.

I wonder what else I should try...The vipers suck for good times I hate them...Any ideas? If not im still gonna use my Lancer...

OK...I shall now write a new chapter.

Cars attempted:
Honda Civic SiR II: 146,540 @ 363hp, with a best lap of 1'18.946

Silvia Spec R Aero: 148,800 @ 420hp, with a best lap of 1'16.342

Aston Martin XKR: 149,980 @ 517hp, with a best lap of 1'16.640

Griffith 500: 149,760 @ 531 hp put my in the 1'15.XXX range

Mazda RX-7 RZ: 148,980 @ 597hp, with a best lap of 1'09.027

And the winner is....

Corvette Z06: 149,900 @ XXXhp (I completely forgot to write this down.)

Whoohoo!

If anyone is still interested in this, I was finally able to top Der Alta's time of 1'08.406 with a time of 1'08.238 over the course of 46 laps using the Camaro SS. Man, I've never attempted to beat a time more than 45 times, but I guess I persevered through this because I knew it was possible. It was just a matter of getting it all together and pulling off one cool, smooth lap.

Anyone willing to take a shot at beating my time?

Now that's impressive! :band: Congrats! Fury_X21 rewrote my first chapter.

I'd thought this thread had passed by the wayside. Very nice run!. Looks like I'll have to load up a Camaro SS and see if I've got what it takes.

I'll post my results near the end of the week. And here I was thinking that after three weeks, I could settle for winning this challenge.

Hold your breath!

I would say the most crucial corner is the left hand sweeper following the first tunnel. I was able to get through there the fastest by taking it wide, then cutting across and clipping the apron, going full throttle exiting the corner. But this proved to be inconsistent for me, because you have to have just the right timing to know where to cut in at and when to jam on the gas, so on my fastest lap I ended up taking that corner the usual way by hugging the inside. This corner was pretty much the "make or break" your lap corner, as you could gain a lot of time by going wide then cutting in, or losing a lot of time by sliding on the rumble strips or touching the dirt coming off.

If I do try to top my time, I will most likely use a different car considering how long it took me to get that time w/ the Camaro and how the time probably can't be improved much more with that car. Right now, I have the RX-7 in mind.

Well...If you're up to it, I ran a 1'09.027 in the RX-7.

Bad news (for you, anyway :D). After attempting to top my time with numerous cars (the Z06 wasn't one of them), I came down to the TVR Griffith 500. I was really impressed by how smooth the handling was, so I decided to see if it could hang with my Camaro's time. To my surprise, the Camaro couldn't leave the Griffith in its tracks on the straights, and the Griffith definitely had the advantage through the turns. After 15 laps, I was able to top the Camaro's time. I then decided to keep going to see if I could break into the 1'07s.

I tried and tried, and on Lap 37 I finally improved my time. Unfortunately, I only ran a 1'08.025, just short of the 1'07 mark. I continued on, knowing that I could do it as long as I had patience. Numerous times I would be ahead of my ghost, only to mess up at the hairpin turn right before the 2nd tunnel. However, I did not get frustrated because the car was quite consistent and I could run right with my ghost car easily. I just couldn't quite seem to get it all together.

Lap 53: True to the testament above, I came off of the left hand sweeper ahead of my ghost car by about 0.100 seconds. I wanted to turn off the ghost car to eliminate the distraction, but I got so excited that I didn't think about it until right in front of the switchback, where I opted not to because I knew that I would run the risk of screwing up on the switchback. Just as before, the rear end slid out on me as I was going through the banked hairpin, and my ghost drove away, thus ruining the lap time.

Lap 54: Went into turn 1, hugged the inside and came out completely clear of my ghost. Sped through the S-curve started pulling away, but lost all my time on the double right leading to the first tunnel. However, I was able to hug the inside of left handed sweeper, clipped the inside rumble strip, made a slight steering adjustment, and came out slightly ahead of my ghost car. Same scenario as above, but this time I was ready. I turned the ghost car off when I came off the sweeper, concentrated, and sped through the switchback. Slowed the car enough, turned in, and accelarated whilst only steering marginally. The back end didn't slide out. I quickly turned the ghost back on (by pressing "Select") to see I was only slightly in front of him. I clipped the rumble strips on the first turn coming out of the tunnel, crossed the track, then hugged the rumble strips on the inside, making a slight and sudden steering adjustment to avoid scraping the wall. Slowly my car began to pull ahead. "Go, go, go!" I yelled as my car inched ever so slowly ahead of my previous best lap's ghost. "I did it!" I thought as my car crossed the start/finish line.

....But wait! The lap time read 1'08.005. You have got to be kidding me! Only .005 seconds off from my target. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed and heartbroken.

So after 54 Laps, I am .005 seconds off from breaking into the 1'07s :banghead:

Here are my purchases:

TVR Griffith: 62,410
Full Suspension: 17,000
Sports Brakes: 4,800
Semi-Racing Muffler: 2,950
NA Tune Up Stage 2: 13,500
Computer Chip: 1,800
Triple Plate Clutch: 4,800
Racing Flywheel: 1,100
Carbon Driveshaft: 3,250
Soft Tires: 35,250
Lightweight Stage 1: 1,300
Oil Change: 250

Total: 148,410

Impressive...To say the least, I've attempted the Griffith, it's a bit of a lunker. I haven't had time due to real world commitments (ie. my job...), but Rest assured, I'm in for the competition.

I've got a bit of time tonight to throw at it. The barrier currently now is the 1'07.XXX mark.

Easy enough to aim for.

Tomorrow...I'll post results.

The next chaprter...an unfortunate epilogue.

After a very rough work day (10 hours in the office, a three hour presentation, and 1.5 hours worth of commuting) and coming home to find the wife sick, and ready for bed, i managed to put a few moments behind the wheel of the Vette.

Managed to shave my previous time down a hair, to a 1'08.201. Still 2/10ths off your fast time. There are a few more spots that I can clean up, and break the 1'07 barrier, but I won't get to the until Sunday evening.

Can I convince you to give the Vette a run and see how I'm fairing? I'd be interested to see if I've driven it to the limit of where I can. If I've driven it to the edge, I'll have to take the Griffith out for a good beat.

On a curious side note, do you have a Sharkport? or an ability to load a replay to the web?

AO

Unfortunately, I don't have a Sharkport, so I can't actually prove to you my times are valid. But rest assured, they are possible.

As for the Corvette, I bust a 1'07.988 right off the bat on the first lap, then improved that to a 1'07.630 on the 4th lap. I tried to top that time for 10 more laps, but quit because I was getting upset with the car's handling. Not that its bad, it just seems a bit stubborn and seems less capable of holding its line even more so than the Griffith. Nevertheless, it is definitely the quicker car out of the two, and probably the best bet for this whole competition.

Here were my purchases. I really don't feel like referring back to the game to get each individual price on each part (I'm feeling kind of tired, may end up going to sleep early), but I can assure you the total equals up to less than 150K.

Car
Full Suspension
Sports Brakes
Semi-Racing Muffler
NA Tune Up Stage 2
Port Polish
CPU Chip
Twin Plate Clutch
Racing Flywheel
Carbon Driveshaft
Soft Tires
Lightweight Stages 1 & 2
Oil Change

Referring back to your post where you posted your first record w/ the Z06, I recommend against buying the Full Transmission. The Corvette has a pretty wide 6th gear ratio by default, but w/ the setup I had I could reach the end of the front straight w/o maxing out still in 5th gear. You could also save a couple thousand by not buying the top of the line parts in some categories. Since I used the Griffith, I have followed a general set of rules when it comes to the purchases.

Full Suspension - a bit expensive, but allows full adjustment of the suspension. Benefits over the Semi-Racing suspension include lower ride height capability, stronger stabilizer capability, spring rate adjustment, and toe adjustment.
Semi-Racing Muffler - possesses one of the best price to performance improvement ratios of all the parts. I prefer this over the Racing Muffler because it is 2K cheaper and the Racing Muffler only improves the performance by 10-12hp over the Semi-Racing Muffler.
NA Tune Up Stage 2/Turbo Kit Stage 2 - moderately expensive, but upgrades the car's power drastically and is, therefore, a must.
CPU Chip - at a cheap 1.5K, this part offers considerable improvement of power for its price.
Racing Flywheel - only costs a little bit over 1K. Quickens the car's accelaration, decelaration, and shifting.
Lightweight Stage 1 - just over 1K, and can lighten the car by almost 100kgs. Simply a must
Oil Change - the very definition of cheap horsepower

All the parts/purchases listed above are musts. Other things like brakes, driveshafts, port polishes, and lightweight stage 2s are purely optional and are for what money you have left over. I tend not to buy limited slips because I rely on the suspension and tires to take care of all the handling.

Just a few pointers.

Very interesting. I took a slightly different approach to the cost on the vette. Because of the lower cost of the suspension that I ran, I was able to put more power on the car, hence I out ran the stock transmission.

I'd like to be able to say I'll run more laps on this in the near future, but time available grows thinner.

I wasn't worried about the runs being valid, I certainly believe they are. The Sharkport was more fro my beneift in learning what possible other lines there are, that I may not have seen. In the near past, I've gotten the chance to trade a few replays with a few other people who were by far more experienced than I. This has helped my game tremendously.

Very well then, the Standing record is 1'07.630 By FuryX21.

Err, I think me and you are out in the middle of nowhere as far as outside participation in this topic goes. I wish I had visited this forum during the height of this challenge's life. I don't play the game during the week and my weekends are consumed with me working on a race series which I have been trying to get together since June. And when I'm not doing that, I am logging data into a huge database of mine that I have created that gives all sorts of stats on my game. I know how faithful you are when it comes to race write-ups and I believe you would be quite interested in seeing all of the in-depth statistics that I have recorded on my game. Unfortunately, since the database is so huge, it takes quite a bit of time to update each section, calculate averages, etc... However, if you are interested in seeing a portion of what I have then I would be more than willing to share.

I know this is an old thread but for grins I did 50 laps in a Z06 fiddling with it as I went. The best I could do is 1:08:207. Dont think I have the best lines yet, maybe I'll run it some more.

I'm still watching this thread, and willing to run a bit more, just seems that time never comes available.

I still have the desire to break the 1'07 barrier at Midfield for less than 150,000 cr. just have to find the available seat time.

I can attest to the possible-ness (I make my own words) of 1:07's.

Black (fastest color ;) ) Z06- 54000
Full Customize Susp. - 17000
Sports Brakes - 4700
Racing Muffler - 4800
Computer - 1500
Stage 2 Tune-up - 12500
Port and Polish - 5500
Twin plate clutch - 2700
Racing flywheel - 1050
Carbon d-shaft - 3000
Soft tires 35000
St. 2 lightening - 7700 (1200+5500)
Oil change - 250
Snazzy black wheels with polished lip - 500
Total ----- 149,200

1:07.188

And There are 1:06's in it, I just psyche myself out every time I get a lead on my old time and screw up the last corner or the long sweeper and get into the gravel.

I'm with Fury on the tranny thing, it's worth it to have 10,000 credits' worth of horsepower to barely brush the limiter in 5th on the stock ratios, which are all well spaced until you hit the 0.5:1 gear or whatever rediculous ratio 6th is.

Hmmm.....may have to take another shot at this, as I can see I have been bested :P

Looks like for the most part, you bought the same parts as I did (even the same color car too! ;), so that means it looks like I need to improve my lines or fiddle with the setup more.

If I can somehow manage to put Vice City to the side long enough, I'll eventually re-tackle this challenge.

Update: Just took another shot at this, only this time buying the racing muffler instead of the semi-racing muffler. On lap 10, just as I was going into the quick left-right leading to the main straightaway and was about to give up, I pulled ahead of my ghost and got a time of 1'07.099. Thrilled and noting how close I was to breaking into the 1'06 mark, I continued on to see if I could do so. My fault in this lap was the sweeper turn, where I didn't take the right line and couldn't get on the gas as soon as I wanted. However, I nailed the hairpin turn leading to the last tunnel, so I knew I would have a hard time besting this lap since the whole lap would virtually depend on that banked hairpin turn.

On lap 20, I came off the sweeper turn ahead of my ghost by 0.114 seconds, went through the chicane, and slowed for the hairpin. I didn't get through as good as I could, but nonetheless came out slightly ahead. My ghost was right behind me as I crossed the finish line 0.066 seconds ahead to give me a time of 1'07.033. For 9 more laps, I tried to best this time, but to no avail. Needless to say, I was ahead of my ghost coming off the sweeper turn several times, but ended up psyching myself out as you put it and screwed up on the hairpin. One time I actually made it through the hairpin still in front, but was so tense that I screwed up on the quick left-right leading to the front straightaway and ruined my time.

So there you have it. 1'07.033 is the current time to beat. It looks like if anyone beats this time they will have broken into the 1'06 mark.
