2011 Chinese Grand Prix

Button seems to be a bit better in a long race. I wonder if Hamilton will let him by once they've done a few laps. Depends on the start shuffle I guess...

What's with the 'I'm going to brand you as a fanboy' going on?

About Vettel and pole/podium getting the lion's share of attention, that's simple for me: it's boring (from my perspective) because we don't really know if Vettel's race craft has actually improved. Yes, he flew by Button at Albert Park without choking and good for him, but again that doesn't prove as much as what I'd like to think we all want to see - Vettel under pressure similar to, or in the case of him defending his title, even more pressure than he underwent last season. Having to get by fierce competition that isn't going to let him by regardless of how quick he is. All we know for certain this year over last is he's gotten faster. That's about all of it really.

So you're already assuming Hamilton will get past Button at the start?

He is very good, and he seems to take advantage of his car's performance really well, pulling off massive leads. That is true that we haven't seen his true race craft yet. Even then, race craft is not a requirement of a champion. Jim Clark and Alberto Ascari were both reputedly lousy when it came to fighting for positions; both preferred to dominate a race from the front. It is noteworthy that Ascari is still the only person to win all races in a season, even if it was only 9 or so. Hopefully won't be the case this season!

What we need is another Renault charge up the front and past the Red Bulls to shake things up a bit. :D

It was a legit move to take track position. Unless something has changed recently, you are allowed to overtake in qualifying and Massa did so to get clean air for his flying lap. Neither was on a flyer and they didn't touch so there were no problems. It was a smart move.

It looked like they touched to me and, unless something has changed recently, you are not allowed to contact another driver or hold them up on a qualifying lap - in, out or timed.

I'm sure if Hamilton or Button had done so, you would be praising their ingenuity for getting themselves the clear air they needed. No?

Welcome to "Let's Make Crap Up Tennis". What crap would you like me to make up about you, then phrase as a question so it doesn't look like a straw man?

Why would I praise a dick move by Hamilton or Button?

David Hobbs made a good point during qualifying, if KERS is supposed to be a "green" movement in F1, why is FIA allowing teams to destroy these batteries over 1 race weekend? Like David said, there is nothing "green" about making or recycling batteries.

Why don't you just post your opinion instead of altering my post? That strikeout thing is stupid. Mark's 4th and 5th place finishes are better than Michael's 9th. Neither of the Mercedes' drivers' race pace was that impressive. Again, it was clear from Webber's onboard shots that his KERS wasn't discharging. Also, until this weekend Mark has qualified close to his teammate with two 3rd places. I don't get what you're trying to say.

edit: Also, Michael has yet to make it to Q3. Nico has made it in all three races.

You're ignoring the reusable energy part of KERS. That's huge. They're making something from energy that will otherwise be wasted. How is recycling not 'green'?

I'm seeing strong double standards going on here....

The Marginal energy and C02 emission saved from Kinetic energy recovery are MASSIVELY overshadowed by cost of manufacture of the batteries.

Hopefully some things learned from the F1 KERS technology can be carried into road cars, and improve their KERS systems. If so, you could begin to argue that KERS is a green technology. In F1 alone, its not green, not by a long way.

How? I don't care for Mark nor Michael. We're talking about relative performance to their teammates and Mark has performed closer to his teammate in qualifying than Michael has. It's fact.

Recycling isn't green when your wasting more energy "recycling" batteries after one race weekend. It will never be green until they come up with a mechanical storage device such as a flywheel.

Recycling papers, plastics, glass, etc. is useless as well? It takes a lot of energy to make waste (recycled goods) back into a new bottle or whatever.

But it will cost more to cutdown trees and make them into paper, heatsand to make into glass for windows or bottles or melt resin into plastic bottles.

But you do make a point that the green gain is small on the KERS system, and batteries are a weakness for green energy at this point in time.

Best an electric car can do is 300miles on a single charge with regenitive braking.

I wonder how much extra fuel they have to carry due to the extra 30 kilos that kers weighs... I don't doubt that Kers more than makes up for it's weight, but it's one more thing to take into consideration when considering the efficiency of Kers.

Well the things about KERS in F1 and the 'Green Challenge' in ALMS is all about making these technologies commonplace in road cars.

Can't wait for this race. I just really hope that Vettel can't get a 2 second advantage on lap 1.:nervous:

Only hope is that either McLaren (or possibly Alonso or Rosberg) can somehow pip Vettel before Turn 1. Then it might be a bit of a race. If Vettel is in front at Turn 1, everyone's gonna have to hope something falls off the RBR to stand half a chance...

Vettel's Qualifying reminds me of Senna.

His raw pace is just ridiculous. The hating on Vettel because his not stuck down in the pack is also ridiculous. Honestly the ability to pull the laps he is doing, when he needs them is crazy, and in the race he always has the pace when required.

Looking forward to the race.

Some people are just going to hate him regardless. I'm a big fan of Vettel and couldn't agree more with you.

I can only speak for myself, but I dont regard Vettel as he is mentioned in the same breath as Senna and Schumi, yet he is entirely untested in wheel-to-wheel racing. Sure, when he gets clean air, he is super quick, but his dicing ability is dodgy to say the least (taking out Button in Spa, Kubica in Aus, Webber in Turkey...)

He is 23.

Give him another 2 - 3years and I think he could pretty much be talked about as being the best of his generation (Hamilton, Alonso, Raikonen) and then start to be qualified to put into the ranks of Senna, Schumacher, Prost.

Schumacher was world champion at 25, Senna 28, Prost 30.

I don't think it was Vettels fault at Spa though. The track was pretty greasy.

Otherwise, Vettel hasn't been tested too much in traffic as everyone has hoped but it still stands as he is one of the fastest drivers on the grid, and especially this season. I would love to see Schumi battle it out with Vettel but as of yet this season he almost can't be touched.

This i dispute. I thing he just got his sums wrong ito overtaking technique.

This I dont dispute. I do think his out and out pace is outstanding, but I think he is way way off the finished article. If he were in a similar car to Alonso or LH and they had to battle it out on track, he'd be toast IMO.
